According to the <a title=\"techcrunch.com\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/04\/26\/sony-to-stop-manufacturing-floppy-discs-after-30-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>,\u00a0 Sony (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=6758:JP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">6758<\/a>) is actually still making and selling those discs. But soon it\u2019s time to say goodbye. The company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sony.jp\/rec-media\/info\/20100423.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> [JP] it will stop production in March 2012. Sony rolled out the world\u2019s first <strong><a title=\"Floppy disk\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Floppy_disk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">3.5-inch floppy<\/a> disc back in 1981<\/strong>. Even in 2008, the company could still sell 8.5 million units in Japan alone.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-102841 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Floppy Disks Fades\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fdd.jpg?resize=75%2C50&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Floppy Disks Fades\" width=\"75\" height=\"50\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fdd.jpg?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/fdd.jpg?w=135&amp;ssl=1 135w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><em>TechChrunch<\/em> says &#8220;Not too surprisingly, Sony cites rapidly plunging demand as the reason&#8221; Floppy disk (demand peaked in 1995 and has shrunk more than 90% since. <a title=\"Hitachi Maxell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maxell.co.jp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Hitachi Maxell<\/a> and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, two other major makers, withdrew from floppy disc sales in the spring of 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly, <strong>Sony wrapped up international sales of floppy discs<\/strong> last month. The exception was India and a few other parts of the world.
