Struggling network gear maker Alcatel-Lucent and <a title=\"France T\u00e9l\u00e9com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.francetelecom.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">France Telecom-Orange<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : FTE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/XETR-FTE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FTE<\/a>) have deployed a long-distance terrestrial <strong>400 Gbps <a title=\"Optical fiber\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Optical_fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">optical fiber<\/a> link<\/strong> that uses 44 such wavelengths to move an amazing (<em>for now at least<\/em>) <strong>17.6 terabits per second<\/strong> (Tbps) of aggregate traffic.<\/p>\n<p><em>GigaOM<\/em> speculates moving this amount of traffic will be popular with telecoms operators. The article reports that the first tester is the French educational and research network <a title=\"Renater\" href=\"http:\/\/www.renater.fr\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renater<\/a>.
