In addition, <strong>UL<\/strong> claims that the two <strong>cables do not contain required <a title=\"Flame retardant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flame_retardant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">flame-retardant<\/a><\/strong> elements, so they both <strong>pose fire hazards<\/strong>. The first warning regards a <a title=\"Startech\" href=\"http:\/\/www.startech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>StarTech<\/strong><\/a> product while the second carries the brand name <strong><a title=\"Monoprice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monoprice.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Monoprice<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"articlepublicationdate\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/cable\/article\/16474292\/ul-notifies-of-potentially-hazardous-communications-cable-bearing-counterfeit-mark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103178\" title=\"StarTech communications cable\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/face_UL_mark.png?resize=100%2C118&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"StarTech communications cable\" width=\"100\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/face_UL_mark.png?resize=127%2C150&amp;ssl=1 127w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/face_UL_mark.png?resize=63%2C75&amp;ssl=1 63w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/face_UL_mark.png?w=331&amp;ssl=1 331w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Back in January <a title=\"Underwriters Laboratories\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Underwriters Laboratories (UL)<\/a> issued a <a title=\"UL warns of potentially hazardous communications cable (Release 12PN-64)\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131004093608\/http:\/\/www.ul.com:80\/global\/eng\/pages\/corporate\/newsroom\/newsitem.jsp?cpath=%2Fglobal%2Feng%2Fcontent%2Fcorporate%2Fnewsroom%2Fpublicnotices%2Fdata%2Ful-warns-of-potentially-hazardous-communications-cable-release_20130115080000.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public notice<\/a> that identified <strong>StarTech<\/strong> communications cable as being mislabeled. According to an <a title=\"UL notifies of \u2018potentially hazardous\u2019 communications cable bearing counterfeit mark\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/articles\/2013\/january\/ul-notice-startech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Cabling Installation &amp; Maintenance<\/i><\/a>, UL stated that the cable, \u201cbears a <strong>counterfeit UL Mark<\/strong> for the United States and may <strong>pose a fire hazard<\/strong><i>.<\/i>\u201d The safety organization states, \u201cThe communications cable has not been evaluated by UL to the appropriate standard for safety in the United States, and is not authorized to bear the UL mark or any reference to UL.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Further, the notice states that the cable \u201cis <strong>missing required flame retardant elements<\/strong>. This may cause an increased <strong>risk of fire<\/strong>.\u201d The box bears the brand name StarTech and has the terms \u201c<a title=\"International Organization for Standardization\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iso.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">ISO<\/a> 9011,\u201d \u201cUL,\u201d \u201cETL,\u201d and \u201cIECQ\u201d printed on it. According to UL\u2019s notice, the cable jacket includes the following: \u201cCMR Type 4PR 24AWG 75C (UL) E151955-A CSA LL79189 ETL Verified TIA\/EIA-568-B.2 <a title=\"Category 5 cable\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category_5_cable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">CAT 5E<\/a> UTP 350 MHZ <a title=\"Patch cable\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patch_cable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Patch Cable<\/a> B-8A1004 <a title=\"Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Restriction_of_Hazardous_Substances_Directive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">ROHS Compliant.<\/a>\u201d The UL alert says that the cable was sold at <strong><a title=\"overstock.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.overstock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overstock.com<\/a> <\/strong>and may have been sold at other locations.<\/p>\n<p>In a February <a title=\"Another UTP cable warning from UL\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/articles\/2013\/february\/ul-notice-monoprice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> at <i>Cabling Installation &amp; Maintenance,<\/i> there is a similar problem with cable sold by <strong>Monoprice<\/strong>. The UL issued, an <a title=\"UL warns of potentially hazardous communications cable (Release 12PN-65)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alert<\/a> to the public that Monoprice <strong>cable uses the UL mark without authorization<\/strong> and <strong>lacks certain fire-retardant materials. <\/strong>The UL alert says this cable is known to be also sold at www.greenconnectionsusa.com<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Fiber Optic Association\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefoa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiber Optic Association<\/a> has a <a title=\"Dangers of counterfeit communications cable\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/JfBxlg74tvM?t=3m22s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube video<\/a> that demonstrates the <strong>fire dangers<\/strong> of counterfeit communications cable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/JfBxlg74tvM?start=225\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>StarTech response<\/strong> to the UL warning shared with <i>Cabling Installation &amp; Maintenance<\/i>\u00a0seemed more concerned about their <strong>ISO certification<\/strong> than correcting the problem. StarTech issued the following statement on January 24: &#8220;StarTech.com has been an <strong>ISO 9001<\/strong> registered company since 1998 and is currently certified as <a title=\"ISO 9000\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ISO_9000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">ISO 9001:2008<\/a> compliant. As such, we take this matter seriously and have issued an internal corrective action report (CAR) and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. Based on the outcome of our investigation, appropriate action will be taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideachampions.com\/weblogs\/archives\/2010\/06\/the_value_of_co_1.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103181\" title=\"Unbeknownst to us\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Confused_guy.jpg?resize=90%2C129&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Unbeknownst to us\" width=\"90\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a>Monoprice&#8217;s response<\/strong> to <i>Cabling Installation &amp; Maintenance<\/i> came from company rep. Chris Apland. The firm claimed they did not know about the misleading and dangerous cat 5 cables. He claims they did not know what their vendor was doing. \u201c<em>Unbeknownst to us at the time, Monoprice\u2019s <strong>former vendor<\/strong> for the product in question was inappropriately labeling our product certifications.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to claim the firm is sorry and has changed its ways. \u201c<em>Monoprice terminated our relationship with the vendor in question &#8230; We apologize to both UL and to our customers for any confusion this may have caused.<\/em>&#8221; Mr. Apland added in the firm&#8217;s response that Monoprice\u2019s \u201c<em><strong>new vendor<\/strong> provides a higher quality <a title=\"Category 6 cable\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category_6_cable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Cat 6<\/a> bulk cable that includes the critical fire-retardant material called for in the UL complaint &#8230; we have since been in contact with UL through our <strong>China<\/strong> office&#8230;<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>In order to prevent safety problems on your job site, the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association (<a title=\"CCCA\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221209132041\/http:\/\/www.cccassoc.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CCCA<\/a>) recommends the best practice is to buy proven quality, name-brand cables and patch cords for known vendors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Other recommendations include:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Check for the <a title=\"UL holographic label\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cablinginstall.com\/articles\/2010\/10\/ul-requires-holographic-labels-for-communications-cable.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UL holographic label<\/a> on all boxes or reels of cable.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Verify the UL mark and cable type on the cable jacket.<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Consult the UL online certifications directory to find if the manufacturer has a UL listing via the UL file number (the E number).<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Verify the authorized UL marks and correct terminology appear in cable specifications (cut sheets)<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Weigh the box of cable.
