A multiyear, multimillion-dollar deal with Powermat gives <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Motors<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-GM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM)<\/a> exclusive rights to place the company\u2019s portable-device charging technology in its cars for a year. according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facesofgm.com\/2010\/05\/26\/micky-bly-reinventing-the-automobile-with-chevy-volt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micky Bly<\/a>, the company\u2019s director of hybrid vehicles. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/chevy-volt-discontinued-chevrolets-last-volt-rolls-off-the-assembly-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Chevy Volt<\/a> and certain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cadillac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cadillac<\/a> models will be the first GM cars to the Powermat accessories. The researchers examined 10 car models from eight manufacturers. They were able to take all 10 by intercepting and relaying signals from the cars to their wireless keys because the key transmits its signals up to around 100 meters. The attack works no matter what cryptography and protocols the key and car use to communicate with each other.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers tested a few scenarios. An attacker could watch a parking lot and have an accomplice watch as car owners entered a nearby store. The accomplice would only need to be within eight meters of the targeted owner\u2019s key fob, making it easy to avoid arousing suspicion. In another scenario, a car owner might leave a car key on a table near a window. An antenna placed outside the house was able to communicate with the key, allowing the researchers then to start the car parked out front and drive away.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded that manufacturers will need to add secure technology that allows the car to confirm that the key is in fact nearby.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160403101809\/http:\/\/itnewslink.com\/article.php?id_article=11674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Standard for Automotive-Grade Wireless Modules <\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160423224015\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/02\/20\/your-next-kindle-could-be-embedded-in-your-car\/connectedcar-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-110284\" title=\"Connected car\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/connectedcar-logo-4.png?resize=101%2C67&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Connected car\" width=\"101\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/connectedcar-logo-4.png?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/connectedcar-logo-4.png?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/connectedcar-logo-4.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierrawireless.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sierra Wireless<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/news\/3924339-semtech-closes-12b-acquisition-of-sierra-wireless\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SWIR<\/a>) recently introduced what the firm calls, the industry\u2019s first suite of embedded wireless technology modules designed specifically for automotive manufacturers. The Canadian firm is banking on the emerging trend to include telematics, infotainment, navigation assistance, and remote diagnostics in new cars within the next few years according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160403101809\/http:\/\/itnewslink.com\/article.php?id_article=11674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200928204650\/http:\/\/itnewslink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ITNewsLink.com<\/em><\/a>. The firm believes these applications will need reliable built-in connections to cellular networks. Criminals might then track a vehicle or force its electronic control system to malfunction, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of South Carolina<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rutgers University<\/a> researchers say. The team successfully hijacked two popular tire-pressure-monitoring systems (TPMS).<\/p>\n<p>As automakers add more technology and computers to cars and connect those computers to critical components, in-car systems will need to be secured against hackers, experts warn.<\/p>\n<p>The systems tested by the South Carolina-Rutgers team had very little security in place&#8211;they mainly relied on the communications protocol is not widely published. &#8220;In doing TPMS this way, [automakers] have left the door open to wireless attackers,&#8221; says Travis Taylor, one of the researchers. The team could eavesdrop on communications and, in some circumstances, alter messages in transit. That let the team give false readings to a car&#8217;s dashboard. The automaker is sending infotainment software to Wi-Fi enabled MyFord Touch-equipped vehicles like the Edge.<\/p>\n<p>Ford installed\u00a0 Wi-Fi technology at its Oakville, Ontario, plant where it builds the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.
