The party was for a <strong>human-like robot called the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131101170412\/http:\/\/robonaut.jsc.nasa.gov\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robonaut 2<\/a><\/strong> (R2) developed with General Motors (GM). The R2 robot has a human shape, weighs about 300 pounds, runs on a battery. The NASA\/GM-robot will join the team of the <a title=\"Space Shuttle Discovery\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_Discovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">space shuttle Discovery<\/a> on\u00a0 <a title=\"STS-133\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/STS-133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">STS-133<\/a> mission to the <a title=\"International Space Station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Space_Station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\"><strong>International Space Station<\/strong><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221127100742\/https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/shuttle\/shuttlemissions\/sts133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STS-133<\/a> is scheduled for takeoff on November 1, 2010. Although it will initially only take part in operational tests, upgrades could eventually allow the robot to realize its true purpose. According to GM&#8217;s Taub, \u201c<em>The work done by GM and NASA engineers also will help us validate manufacturing technologies that will improve the health and safety of our GM team members at our manufacturing plants throughout the world.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>For GM, this is about safer cars and safer plants,<\/em>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/media.gm.com\/content\/media\/us\/en\/news\/news_detail.brand_gm.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2010\/Feb\/0204_nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the GM VP for global research and development. &#8220;<em>When it comes to future vehicles, the advancements in controls, sensors, and vision technology can be used to develop advanced vehicle safety systems.
