Ericsson, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-ERIC\/?exchange=NASDAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ERIC<\/a>) the Swedish telecommunications giant has filed suit in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.txed.uscourts.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas<\/a> against a number of companies for alleged patent infringement of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ieee.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IEEE<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ieee802.org\/11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">802.11<\/a> Wi-Fi products <a href=\"http:\/\/cens.com\/cens\/html\/en\/news\/news_inner_33833.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/cens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CENS.com<\/a><\/em>. <em>CENS.com<\/em> says the businesses named in Ericsson&#8217;s lawsuit include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acer.com\/us-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100394 \" parent company<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D-Link&#8217;s subsidiary in America<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netgear.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Netgear<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>CENS.com<\/em> article says the lawsuit involves all WLAN (wireless local area network) devices either incorporating chipsets supplied by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atheros.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atheros Communications Inc<\/a>.,<a the companies named are offering products that violate one or more of the following WLAN patents (number\/title):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6,466,568 &#8211; &#8216;Multi-rate radiocommunication systems and terminals&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>5,771,468 &#8211; &#8216;Multi-purpose base station&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>6,519,223 &#8211; &#8216;System and method for implementing a semi-reliable retransmission protocol&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>6,330,435 &#8211; &#8216;Data packet discard notification&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>6,772,215 &#8211; &#8216;Method for minimizing feedback responses in ARQ protocols<\/li>\n<li>6,424,625 &#8211; &#8216;Method and apparatus for discarding packets in a data network having automatic repeat request&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>6,173,352 &#8211; &#8216;Mobile computer mounted apparatus for controlling enablement and indicating the operational status of a wireless communication&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>5,987,019 &#8211; &#8216;Multi-rate radiocommunication systems and terminals&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>5,790,516 &#8211; &#8216;Pulse shaping for data transmission in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed system&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxconn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100400 \" title=\"D-Link logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/dLink_Logo-e1565661112740-75x21.gif?resize=100%2C28&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"D-Link logo\" width=\"100\" height=\"28\" infringing companies to compensate its losses and asked the court to ban the sales of the infringing products. D-Link told <em>CENS.com<\/em> they cannot give any comment because the company had not received any file from the court. But it will not affect the sales of its products. Acer told <em>CENS.com <\/em>that its legal department had received the related notice and has started judicial procedures.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have covered other WLAN patent suits <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-K6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. While I&#8217;m no patent lawyer, what this says to me is that the WLAN market is starting to level off and firms are looking for &#8220;other&#8221; ways to make some money without producing products. A business tactic fresh from the 1980s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I also noticed that this suit between a European firm (Ericsson) and Asian firms (Acer, Netgear, and D-Link) was brought in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
