Mary Meeker called &#8220;Queen of the Net&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/online.barrons.com\/this_week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Barron&#8217;s<\/em><\/a> during the run up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Dot-bomb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dot-bomb<\/a>, made the prediction during her &#8220;State of the Internet&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181217111053\/http:\/\/assets.en.oreilly.com\/1\/event\/39\/Internet%20Trends%20Presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">presentation<\/a>\u00a0at the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161019185350\/http:\/\/www.web2summit.com\/web2010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Web 2.0 Summit<\/a> in <a title=\"San Francisco\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.7793,-122.4192&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=37.7793,-122.4192%20%28San%20Francisco%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/posttech\/2010\/11\/smartphone_sales_to_pass_compu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that Ms. Meeker further projected that by 2013, <a title=\"Smart phone\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180907144717\/http:\/\/www.wikinvest.com:80\/concept\/Smart_phone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikinvest noreferrer\">smartphone<\/a> sales will approach 650 million units. Meeker spoke about growth in the smartphone market and its link to social networking sites, as well as about Internet video and advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Meeker, says to watch out for mobile growth in China. The rehabilitated dot-bomb cheerleader says that China&#8217;s population of smartphone users is relatively nascent, with 14.5 million 3G users, or two percent of the population. That compares with 37 million in the United States. But that population grew by 941 percent in the third quarter compared with one year ago.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Techcrunch<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"techcrunch.com\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/11\/16\/meeker-smartphones-pcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> that Ms. Meeker&#8217;s predictions are reasonable. Smartphones are cheaper and phones, in general, are more ubiquitous. To the extent that all phones are becoming smartphones, they will be much more accessible and portable and than PCs (laptops included).
