The <a title=\"Hotmail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotmail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hotmail<\/a> replacement has more than <strong>400 million accounts<\/strong>. According to a <a title=\"Outlook.com: 400 million active accounts, Hotmail upgrade complete and more features on the way\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.office.com\/b\/microsoft-outlook\/archive\/2013\/05\/02\/outlook-com-400-million-active-accounts-hotmail-upgrade-complete-and-more-features-on-the-way.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog entry<\/a> at <em><a title=\"Office.com\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.office.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office.com<\/a><\/em> most Hotmail users will not notice much difference. They can continue to use those accounts as long as they choose and can claim an Outlook email address whenever they like.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-98288\" title=\"Hotmail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hotmail_old_logo.png?resize=87%2C72&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Hotmail\" width=\"87\" height=\"72\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hotmail_old_logo.png?resize=150%2C125&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hotmail_old_logo.png?resize=75%2C63&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/hotmail_old_logo.png?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 87px) 100vw, 87px\" \/>Writing in the company blog, <a title=\"Dick Craddock\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130829073130\/http:\/\/blogs.office.com:80\/members\/dick-craddock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dick Craddock<\/a>,\u00a0Outlook.com&#8217;s group program manager said that Hotmail had more than <strong>300 million active accounts that had to be moved<\/strong>. MSFT completed the epic live upgrade in only six weeks. The upgrade from Hotmail to Outlook.com required communicating with hundreds of millions of people, upgrading all their mailboxes, and making sure they preserved every email, calendar, contacts, folders, and personal preference.<\/p>\n<p>The new Outlook email client has several different features from Hotmail, such as <strong><a title=\"two-factor authentication\" href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/definition\/two-factor-authentication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-factor authentication<\/a><\/strong>, an updated calendar, and app as well as integration with <a title=\"Cloud computing\" href=\"http:\/\/searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com\/definition\/cloud-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud service<\/a> Skydrive and <a class=\"entity-ref\" title=\"Skype\" href=\"http:\/\/www.skype.com\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skype<\/a>. it allowed users to connect easily with <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : FB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FB<\/a>)<a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">,<\/a> <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>, and <a title=\"LinkedIn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LinkedIn<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : LNKD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/news\/linkedin-delist-nyse-dec-19-lnkd-msft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LNKD<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"GigaOm\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>GigaOm<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Man bites dog: Microsoft Outlook.com embraces Gmail users\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151022060630\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/05\/14\/man-bites-dog-microsoft-outlook-com-embraces-gmail-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that MSFT will even allow <strong>collaboration with Google<\/strong> users. Or, if you and your Google-oriented buddy are collaborating on a document in Microsoft Skydrive (as opposed to, say, Google Drive), you can send an instant message to your Google contact with the click of a button. Founded by <a title=\"Sabeer Bhatia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sabeer_Bhatia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Sabeer Bhatia<\/a> and <a title=\"Jack Smith (Hotmail)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Smith_%28Hotmail%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Jack Smith<\/a> it was <strong>launched on July 4 1996<\/strong> as &#8220;HoTMaiL&#8221;. <strong>Microsoft bought the web email service in 1997 for an estimated $400 million<\/strong>, and it was rebranded as &#8220;MSN Hotmail&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Outlook.com was launched in February 2013. \u00a0It&#8217;s based around Microsoft&#8217;s <a title=\"Metro (design language)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metro_%28design_language%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Metro design language<\/a>, and closely mimics the user interface of Microsoft Outlook.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Confused\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sodahead.com\/living\/do-you-think-you-are-good-looking\/question-2562537\/?page=2&amp;link=ibaf&amp;q=&amp;imgurl=http:\/\/paxarcana.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/shocked.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px none; margin-left: 2px; margin-right: 2px;\" title=\"Amazed\" src=\"https:\/\/paxarcana.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/shocked.jpg?resize=111%2C136#man%20shocked\" alt=\"Amazed\" width=\"111\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a>For anyone who has ever had to be involved in a hot email upgrade, you should recognize the technical feat moving Hotmail to Outlook.com really was despite occasional <a title=\"Microsoft Hotmail, Outlook problems crop up. Again.\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201205152137\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/03\/12\/microsoft-hotmail-outlook-problems-crop-up-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">problems<\/a>. During most email system upgrades, anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
