The shutdown will result in nearly 30,000 <a title=\"iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network)\" href=\"http:\/\/searchnetworking.techtarget.com\/definition\/iDEN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iDEN<\/a> installations being taken off the air. All of that ewaste needs to be part of a recycling Project.<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"FierceBroadbandWireless\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130922003831\/http:\/\/www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FierceBroadbandWireless<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"Sprint turns iDEN shutdown into massive recycling project\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131001233534\/http:\/\/www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com\/story\/sprint-turns-iden-shutdown-massive-recycling-project\/2013-06-05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a> that Sprint has deployed <a title=\"LTE FDD and TDD\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131023163109\/http:\/\/renesasmobile.com\/cellular-standards\/lte-fdd-tdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDD-LTE<\/a> using the 1900 MHz Band 25 spectrum. Sprint holds two 5 MHz channels in the G band adjacent to the <a title=\"Broadband Personal Communications Service (PCS)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/encyclopedia\/broadband-personal-communications-service-pcs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PCS spectrum<\/a>. The carrier&#8217;s Band 26 800 MHz spectrum is currently used for <a title=\"Code division multiple access\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Code_division_multiple_access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">CDMA<\/a> as well as end-of-life iDEN service. Sprint will gain another two 5 MHz channels for LTE once it shutters its iDEN network on June 30 and re-purposes that <a title=\"800 MHz Spectrum\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/encyclopedia\/800-mhz-spectrum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">800 MHz spectrum<\/a> for LTE.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/48792-sprint-to-dismiss-nextel-network-as-soon-as-june-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108190\" title=\"Sprint without Nextel logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint_divocres_nextel.jpg?resize=110%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sprint without Nextel logo\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint_divocres_nextel.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint_divocres_nextel.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sprint_divocres_nextel.jpg?w=280&amp;ssl=1 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>According to <a title=\"Sprint Nextel corporation\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141101000355\/http:\/\/www.crunchbase.com:80\/company\/sprint-nextel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprint<\/a>, its last full day of <a title=\"iDen\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170909085834\/http:\/\/www.mobileburn.com\/definition.jsp?term=iden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iDEN<\/a> service will be June 29. Sprint said it will close switch locations &#8220;in rapid succession on June 30.&#8221; After the shutdown equipment will be powered down and backhaul at each <a title=\"Cell site\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">cell site<\/a> will be eliminated. Tens of thousands of iDEN cell sites will be deconstructed and taken off the air. Sites, where CDMA and LTE equipment are colocated, will be left intact, minus the iDEN gear, said Sprint.<\/p>\n<h3>100 million pounds of recycling<\/h3>\n<p>The shutdown will generate over 100 million pounds of leftover iDEN network gear. The equipment and materials include cables, batteries, radios, server racks, antennas, air conditioners, and other equipment. Much of the equipment s being staged for recycling vendors. Most concrete shelters housing iDEN cell sites will be crushed and turned into a composite for roads and bridges, said Sprint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wastecoinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108192 size-medium\" title=\"Recycling a nationwide wireless network is a huge undertaking\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/industrial-recycling-scrap1.jpg?resize=109%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Recycling a nationwide wireless network is a huge undertaking\" width=\"109\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/industrial-recycling-scrap1.jpg?resize=109%2C150&amp;ssl=1 109w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/industrial-recycling-scrap1.jpg?resize=55%2C75&amp;ssl=1 55w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/industrial-recycling-scrap1.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/a>The iDEN recycling project is expected to continue into early 2014. &#8220;<em>Recycling a nationwide wireless network is a huge undertaking, but one that we&#8217;re committed to<\/em>,&#8221; said Bob Azzi, senior vice president-network. &#8220;T<em>he company has earned a reputation for environmental stewardship. The iDEN recycling effort extends our commitment.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The market for used iDen equipment is pretty limited. <a title=\"GigaOm\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>GigaOm<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Nextel shutdown will leave 45,000 tons of network junk. How Sprint plans to recycle it\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211128014506\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/06\/05\/nextel-shutdown-will-leave-45000-tons-of-network-junk-how-sprint-plans-to-recycle-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> that iDEN is a dying technology, and Nextel was the world\u2019s largest iDEN carrier. iDEN\u2019s sole manufacturer, <a title=\"Motorola Solutions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motorolasolutions.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Motorola Solutions<\/a>, still supports the technology, and a handful of operators in North and South America, as well as Asia, still use it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wastecoinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108194 size-thumbnail\" title=\"make money from recycling\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recycle_money.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"make money from recycling\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recycle_money.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recycle_money.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/recycle_money.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>The recycling and reusing move isn\u2019t just about PR. <em>GigaOm<\/em> says that Sprint can save significant money by reusing its tech. They could make money from recycling if it sells the scrap to a waste vendor.
