According to the article, the Chinese government flipped its kill switch on the <strong>great firewall of China<\/strong> when it became concerned that some citizens might remember the <strong>24th anniversary of the massacre of protesters in Beijing&#8217;s Tiananmen Square<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/Great-Chinese-Firewall-of-China-Mis-Configuration-Raises-Suspicion-of-DDoS-Attack-471523.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108211\" title=\"Great Firewall of China\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/great-firewall-of-china-1.jpg?resize=110%2C82&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Great Firewall of China\" width=\"110\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/great-firewall-of-china-1.jpg?resize=150%2C112&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/great-firewall-of-china-1.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/great-firewall-of-china-1.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>Apparently, China has decided that the best way to commemorate the massacre is by declaring 4 June &#8220;<strong>internet maintenance day<\/strong>&#8221; when all loyal communists spend the day updating their servers while remaining unconnected to the net. According to the author, the government switched off the Internet so that the loyal network managers would not be bothered by too much net traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108213\" title=\"Tiananmen Square Lego Duck Man\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/China_duck_man.jpg?resize=400%2C260&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tiananmen Square Lego Duck Man\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/China_duck_man.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/China_duck_man.jpg?resize=75%2C49&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/China_duck_man.jpg?resize=150%2C98&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Those sites under maintenance include blogs and websites that might want to remember 4 June for reasons other than being a patch Tuesday. <a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"\u2018Fool\u2019s errand\u2019: Why China censors rubber duckies on Tiananmen anniversary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2013\/06\/04\/fools-errand-why-china-censors-rubber-duckies-on-tiananmen-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculates<\/a> the Chinese government&#8217;s &#8220;fool&#8217;s errand&#8221; of censoring the memory of Tiananmen Square, is due in part to last year&#8217;s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Arab Spring\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arab_Spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Arab Spring<\/a>. The article maintains that shutting down websites and censoring rubber duckies and Legos is part of Beijing&#8217;s reaction to the Arab Spring.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Internet shut-down <em>TechEye<\/em> reports that some sites were allowed to stay up. The <span class=\"entity-ref\">Twitter<\/span>-like <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sina Weibo\" href=\"http:\/\/weibo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Sina Weibo<\/a> was working, as were the Chinese operations for MSN and <span class=\"entity-ref\">Yahoo<\/span>.
