According to the <a title=\"Google Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/patents-and-innovation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Blog<\/a>, Nortel selected the Google bid as the \u201cstalking-horse bid,&#8221; which is the starting point against which others will bid prior to the auction. The sale of the patents is the l<strong>ast gasp<\/strong> of a bankrupt networking giant. Nortel, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20101227180941\/http:\/\/www.reuters.com:80\/article\/idUSTRE6B84FO20101209?pageNumber=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> <strong>had<\/strong> a market capitalization of more than <strong>$250 billion and more than 90,000 employees<\/strong>. The bones of the one-time king are scattered across the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>But now Sweden-based network equipment maker <strong>Ericsson owns<\/strong> most of Nortel&#8217;s North American <strong>wireless operations<\/strong>, its multi-service switch business, and a Chinese joint venture. <strong>Ciena Corp.<\/strong> bought Nortel&#8217;s <strong>optical networking<\/strong> and carrier Ethernet business, while the <strong>Canadian government<\/strong> is taking over Nortel\u2019s <strong>Ottawa campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100253 \" title=\"Apple computers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_logo2-e1565559530786-65x75.jpg?resize=55%2C63&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Apple Computers\" width=\"55\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_logo2-e1565559530786.jpg?resize=65%2C75&amp;ssl=1 65w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_logo2-e1565559530786.jpg?w=77&amp;ssl=1 77w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 55px) 100vw, 55px\" \/><\/a>Nortel had more than <strong>4,000 patents<\/strong>, with a market valuation of about <strong>$1 billion<\/strong>. Nortel owns seven of the 105 patent families likely to be likely components of 4G wireless technologies to LTE and Service Architecture Evolution (SAE), research firm Fairfield Resources told <em>Reuters<\/em>. <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>)\u00a0and <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>)\u00a0are both eying the patents in their escalating wireless wars, <em>Reuters<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/whats-happened-to-research-in-motion-2011-04-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100255 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Research in Motion logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rimm_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C24&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Research in Motion logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"24\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rimm_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C24&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rimm_logo.jpg?resize=150%2C49&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/rimm_logo.jpg?w=173&amp;ssl=1 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>Citing unnamed sources. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230702212845\/https:\/\/von.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Von|Xchange<\/a><\/em> says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rim.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research In Motion<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/crackberry.com\/goodbye-rimm-hello-bbry-research-motion-ticker-change-happens-monday-february-4th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RIMM<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motorolasolutions.com\/US-EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Motorola<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/01\/04\/technology\/thebuzz\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MOT<\/a>) are also said to be eying the intellectual property.\u00a0 Potential buyers will study how widely Nortel&#8217;s 4G-related patents have been licensed, since the company went into bankruptcy protection before 4G was commercially viable warns <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100258 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Google logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/google_logo2-1.jpg?resize=75%2C32&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Google logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"32\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/google_logo2-1.jpg?resize=75%2C32&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/google_logo2-1.jpg?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>The due diligence for the Nortel Wireless patent pursuers may not be necessary because the ITU has redefined 4G all the way back to <a title=\"High Speed Packet Access\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_Speed_Packet_Access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">HSPA<\/a>+, rubber-stamping the marketing claims of the operators <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140713061159\/http:\/\/connectedplanetonline.com\/3g4g\/commentary\/lets-just-chuck-the-term-4g-it-is-meaningless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110618093601\/http:\/\/connectedplanetonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Connected Planet<\/em><\/a>.
