The <a title=\"Dearborn, Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=42.3113305556,-83.2134805556&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=42.3113305556,-83.2134805556 (Dearborn%2C%20Michigan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Dearborn<\/a>, Michigan-based automaker is experimenting with <strong>wireless brake lights<\/strong> that can be seen around corners. <\/span><\/span><a title=\"Ford World Headquarters\" href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/yR50I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford<\/a> is testing the <a title=\"Vehicular communication systems\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vehicular_communication_systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">vehicle-to-vehicle<\/a> safety research in <a title=\"Germany\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=52.5166666667,13.3833333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=52.5166666667,13.3833333333 (Germany)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a> with experimental radio-equipped <strong>S-MAX<\/strong> vehicles that communicates with other vehicles. The S-Max alerts nearby vehicles when the car is braking, long before drivers can see it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-99109\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_logo-2.jpg?resize=150%2C68&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_logo-2.jpg?resize=150%2C68&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_logo-2.jpg?resize=75%2C34&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_logo-2.jpg?w=180&amp;ssl=1 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The Ford test is really part of a <a title=\"Honda, BMW experiment with the autonomous motorcycle\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026181612\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/06\/10\/the-car-is-getting-connected-but-what-about-the-motorcycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">larger <strong>vehicle-to-vehicle communications<\/strong> effort<\/a> that Ford and other global automakers have pursued for years. (<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> I have covered connected cars many times <a title=\"Bach Seat\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-1BO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, <a title=\"Bach Seat\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-S5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here,<\/a> <a title=\"Cars Collaborate to Reduce Risks\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/s2wgaW-545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and<\/a> <a title=\"Bach Seat\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-4J7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/em>). The author claims the idea is to connect every vehicle on the road into a massive <strong>automotive network<\/strong>. Each car itself would be an individual actor, but they would also <a title=\"If cars could talk to one another, what could (and should) they say?\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220121053204\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/02\/28\/if-cars-could-talk-to-another-what-could-and-should-they-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">become aware of the actions and intentions of the vehicles around them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In such a network, the article states that drivers are no longer dependent solely on their senses to react to road and traffic conditions. An electronic brake light is the most obvious use case for such a system. <em>GigaOM<\/em> says that eyes and feet can only act so fast, but a dashboard light warning the driver of a pile-up just out of sight could be a lifesaver. Chief technical officer and vice president of Ford Research and Innovation, <a title=\"Paul Mascarenas\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130502070631\/http:\/\/media.ford.com\/article_display.cfm?article_id=34631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Mascarenas<\/a>, told Australia&#8217;s <a title=\"Ford tests innovative Electronic Brake Light technology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.caradvice.com.au\/237483\/ford-tests-innovative-electronic-brake-light-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Car Advice<\/a> that \u201cCar-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications represent one of the next major advancements in vehicle safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Ford system is one of 20 being tested in Germany so it will be many years before a standard system emerges. I wonder what Ford or worse yet the Feds will do with all the data generated by these vehicle-to-vehicle communications systems.
