The <a title=\"University of Michigan Communication Neuroscience Lab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U-M researchers<\/a> published their <a title=\"Mirror or Megaphone?: How relationships between narcissism and social networking site use differ on Facebook and Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0747563213001155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">results<\/a> online in <a title=\"Computers in Human Behavior\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/07475632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Computers in Human Behavior<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97561\" title=\"University of Michigan\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UofMLogo-e1563039001224.png?resize=70%2C51&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"University of Michigan\" width=\"70\" height=\"51\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UofMLogo-e1563039001224.png?w=110&amp;ssl=1 110w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UofMLogo-e1563039001224.png?resize=75%2C55&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 70px) 100vw, 70px\" \/><\/a><em>TechEye<\/em> says the <strong><a title=\"University of Michigan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan<\/a><\/strong> researchers found that college students and their adult counterparts use social media in differing ways to bolster their egos and control perceptions of others, the report suggests. <a title=\"Elliot Panek\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/elliot-panek\/33\/217\/a41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elliot Panek<\/a>, a University of Michigan researcher said that social networking is about making your image, how you are seen, and also checking on how others respond to this image.<\/p>\n<p><strong>College-age<\/strong> students love using <strong>Twitter <\/strong>to make their opinions and views seem important. He told <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/story\/2013\/06\/11\/tech-facebook-narcissism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBC News<\/a><\/em> that college students social media tool of choice is the <strong>megaphone<\/strong> of Twitter. &#8220;Young people may over evaluate the importance of their own opinions,&#8221; Professor Panek said. &#8220;Through Twitter, they&#8217;re trying to broaden their social circles and broadcast their views about a wide range of topics and issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97565\" title=\"Twitter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/twitter-bird-callout.png?resize=70%2C57&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Twitter\" width=\"70\" height=\"57\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/twitter-bird-callout.png?resize=75%2C61&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/twitter-bird-callout.png?w=140&amp;ssl=1 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 70px) 100vw, 70px\" \/><\/a>Adults<\/strong> who show narcissism tend to prefer <strong>Facebook<\/strong>, which works in the same way. Middle-aged adults usually have already formed their social selves and they use social media to gain approval from those who are already in their social circles. According to Mr. Panek, Facebook serves narcissistic adults as a<strong> mirror<\/strong>. &#8220;It&#8217;s about curating your own image, how you are seen, and also checking on how others respond to this image,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s wrong with being a little narcissistic? Plenty. The traits associated with <a title=\"Narcissistic personality disorder\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/narcissistic-personality-disorder\/DS00652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the disorder<\/a> can stunt the development of close, long-term relationships. What\u2019s more, highly <a title=\"Think You\u2019re All That? You Might Be Putting Your Health at Risk\" href=\"http:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2012\/01\/24\/think-youre-all-that-you-might-be-putting-your-health-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">narcissistic people<\/a>\u00a0are more likely to react aggressively to criticism and to carry out actions that promote themselves at the expense of others. On the upside, narcissism also correlates with higher self-esteem and low anxiety<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97569 \" title=\"Facebook logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/facebook_logo.jpg?resize=52%2C51&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facebook logo\" width=\"52\" height=\"51\" \/><\/a>Those findings confirm the conventional wisdom that Twitter is the more youthful, millennial, <a title=\"Is Twitter Turning Us Into Narcissists?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/alltwitter\/twitter-narcissists_b22234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">me-centric<\/a> social network. Facebook is the province of older people who like to showcase pictures of pasta dishes or post status updates about their kids. We&#8217;d hazard to say it&#8217;s a crutch for people who can&#8217;t get out of the house much, but still, seek validation from their peers. Incidentally, the median age of Facebook users has risen from 38 to 41 over the last few years, according to various social media studies.
