{"id":4926,"date":"2011-02-12T10:23:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-12T15:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbach.net\/blog\/?p=4926"},"modified":"2022-12-30T15:55:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-30T20:55:27","slug":"att-3g-network-magically-upgraded-to-4g","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/att-3g-network-magically-upgraded-to-4g\/","title":{"rendered":"AT&#038;T 3G Network Magically Upgraded to 4G"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-101089 \" title=\"AT&amp;T 3G Network Magically Upgraded to 4G\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/4g-1.jpg?resize=119%2C114&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"AT&amp;T 3G Network Magically Upgraded to 4G\" width=\"119\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/4g-1.jpg?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/4g-1.jpg?resize=75%2C72&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/>Now that the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ITU<\/a> has caved<\/strong> to the <strong>marketers<\/strong> at big telecom, miracles happen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>), America\u2019s second-largest wireless carrier, found that its <strong>3G <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Evolved_HSPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HSPA+<\/a><\/strong> network had <strong>automagically evolved<\/strong> all by itself into a fourth-generation (<strong>4G<\/strong>) wireless network. Proponents of 4G promise that 4G mobile internet speeds are considerably faster than current wireless networks providing faster download, super-fast video streaming, and more billing opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.att.com\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-101091 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-2.jpg?resize=75%2C73&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"75\" height=\"73\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-2.jpg?w=116&amp;ssl=1 116w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-2.jpg?resize=75%2C73&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>Since the ITU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/net\/pressoffice\/press_releases\/2010\/48.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">downgraded<\/a> the definition of 4G to catch up with the marketers and declared, &#8220;<em>4G &#8230;\u00a0 may also be applied &#8230; to the initial third generation systems now deployed<\/em>&#8221; there is no consensus of what exact speed is a 4G network, so companies are free to claim what they want and hopefully the market will sort it out.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T is betting that its customers are too dumb to care. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techeye.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>TechEYE<\/em><\/a> cites a Reuters report that AT&amp;T\u2019s chief exec <a title=\"Ralph de la Vega\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ralph_de_la_Vega\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Ralph de la Vega<\/a> believes that <strong>consumers won\u2019t notice the difference<\/strong> between HSPA+ and the forthcoming <a title=\"LTE Advanced\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LTE_Advanced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">LTE network<\/a> stating that &#8220;<em>The whole industry has come to equate more speed with 4G<\/em>.\u201d <em>TechEYE<\/em> points out that AT&amp;T saw a similar miracle in September 2010 when the marketers found that its HSPA+ network became &#8220;<em>the nation&#8217;s fastest mobile broadband network.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a> has <a title=\"Business Insider\" href=\"http:\/\/e.businessinsider.com\/view\/scd.e8d\/ec224c75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proof<\/a> consumers don&#8217;t care about 4G. They report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nielsen<\/a> on findings that only 54% really knew what it meant (super-fast wireless). 27% of the people polled think it&#8217;s the latest version of the iPhone.
