There is growing global evidence that using <a title=\"Social network\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia nofollow noopener noreferrer\">social networks<\/a> have a <strong>negative impact on their users<\/strong>. Not only do social networks open their users to <strong><a title=\"Social Media as the Top Malware Delivery Vehicle\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151106174247\/http:\/\/www.isaca.org:80\/Education\/Upcoming-Events\/Documents\/2012-NACACS-Presentations\/424-nac2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malware<\/a><\/strong> (PDF) and <strong><a title=\"Identity Theft on Social Media: Are You at Risk?\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160529031504\/http:\/\/www.bbb.org:80\/blog\/2013\/06\/identity-theft-on-social-media-are-you-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identity theft<\/a><\/strong>, but the latest research from around the world suggests that social media can impact user&#8217;s <strong>emotional well-being<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marginlines.com\/facebook-just-how-low-can-facebook-stock-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100877 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Facebook can make you feel bad\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Facebook-killer.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facebook can make you feel bad\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Facebook-killer.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Facebook-killer.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Facebook-killer.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"BuffFeed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>BuzzFeed<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/charliewarzel\/can-a-social-network-survive-if-it-makes-us-sad-the-hidden-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that <strong>social scientists<\/strong> at the <a title=\"University of Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Michigan<\/a> looked at the impact of social networking. The UofM researchers released new research that using Facebook can make you feel bad<em>. <\/em>The <strong><a title=\"University of Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mgoblue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U of M<\/a><\/strong> research published in the online journal <em><a title=\"Plos One\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0069841#s3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plos One<\/a><\/em>\u00a0found that <strong>Facebook<\/strong> use <strong>predicted declines in the well-being of surveyed<\/strong> participants.<\/p>\n<h3>Facebook<\/h3>\n<p>The Michigan research indicates that using Facebook negatively impacts how people feel from one moment to the next. It also impacts their <strong>overall life satisfaction<\/strong>. As UM social psychologist <a title=\"University of Michigan Ethan Kross\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120127221412\/http:\/\/selfcontrol.psych.lsa.umich.edu\/people.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ethan Kross<\/a> explained to <em>BuzzFeed<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<em>On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100878\" title=\"University of Michigan\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UMich_logo-1.png?resize=100%2C68&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"University of Michigan\" width=\"100\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UMich_logo-1.png?resize=150%2C102&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UMich_logo-1.png?resize=75%2C51&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/UMich_logo-1.png?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Bu<\/em><em>zzFeed<\/em> points out that the results are just another piece in a larger stack of evidence. The evidence says that <a title=\"Facebook\u2019s Q2: Monthly Users Up 21% YOY To 1.15B, Dailies Up 27% To 699M, Mobile Monthlies Up 51% To 819M\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/07\/24\/facebook-growth-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased hours per month<\/a> spent on Facebook could have a harmful effect on our lives. Professor Kross <a title=\" Facebook is a bummer, study says \" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/science\/sciencenow\/la-sci-sn-facebook-bummer-20130814,0,3655078.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the <a title=\"LA Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>LA Times<\/em><\/a>, <em>\u201cWe measured lots and lots of other personality and behavioral dimensions &#8230; none of the factors that we assessed influenced the results. The more you used Facebook, the more your mood dropped.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Michigan study tested for and discounted alternative reasons that might account for Facebook\u2019s negative impact on happiness. However, the article claims the deceased life satisfaction of Facebook users has more to do with behavioral patterns than the service itself.<\/p>\n<p>The article <strong>equates Facebook use with gambling<\/strong>. The author cites <a title=\"Alexis Madrigal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/alexis-madrigal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis Madrigal<\/a>&#8216;s article in the <em><a title=\"The Atlantic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlantic<\/a><\/em>, \u201c<a title=\"The Machine Zone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2013\/07\/the-machine-zone-this-is-where-you-go-when-you-just-cant-stop-looking-at-pictures-on-facebook\/278185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Machine Zone<\/a>.\u201d The Atlantic article says that Facebook users, similar to those who play slot machines, are unwittingly lulled into a time-distorting rhythm. They are lulled by repetitive and sometimes rewarding tasks \u2014 like looking at an endless stream of your friends\u2019 photos. This behavior can mimic the deleterious <strong>effects of gambling<\/strong> and even addiction. The article claims this kind of problem stems from Facebook\u2019s savvy design and engineering. Facebook takes advantage of how humans are wired to keep users on the site.<\/p>\n<h3>Social networks in China<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100882\" title=\"China's Beihang University\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/china_map_flag-e1566141597281-150x129.png?resize=111%2C95&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"China's Beihang University\" width=\"111\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/china_map_flag-e1566141597281.png?resize=150%2C129&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/china_map_flag-e1566141597281.png?resize=75%2C64&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/china_map_flag-e1566141597281.png?w=178&amp;ssl=1 178w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><em>TechEye<\/em> also points out a study from researchers at <a title=\"China\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.9166666667,116.383333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=39.9166666667,116.383333333 (China)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\"><strong>China&#8217;<\/strong>s<\/a> Beihang University. The Chinese study claims <a title=\"Social networking service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_networking_service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">social networking sites<\/a> are generating a lot of anger. The <a title=\"Anger is More Influential Than Joy: Sentiment Correlation in Weibo\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1309.2402v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>, by Rui Fan, Jichang Zhao, Yan Chen, and Ke Xu, examined human emotions on China&#8217;s Twitter-like microblogging site <strong><a title=\"Sina Weibo\" href=\"http:\/\/weibo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Sina Weibo<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After reading 70 million messages from 200,000 users of Weibo, the researchers found that anger spreads faster and wider than other emotions like joy. The <em>TechEye<\/em> article suggests that posts you write out of anger will have more impact than those expressing happiness. The researchers also found that users with a larger number of friends have a more significant sentiment influence on their neighborhoods. According to the article, the Chinese researchers found that <strong>anger<\/strong> among users correlated much higher than that of joy. They concluded that angry emotions could spread more quickly and broadly in the network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150622124635\/http:\/\/blog.lib.umn.edu\/cspg\/electionacademy\/2012\/06\/angry_twitter_birds_unhappy_nyslideshow.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100884\" title=\"Angry tweets\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-twitter-bird-1-e1566141395663-150x100.png?resize=101%2C67&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Angry tweets\" width=\"101\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-twitter-bird-1-e1566141395663.png?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-twitter-bird-1-e1566141395663.png?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/angry-twitter-bird-1-e1566141395663.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a>If a user sent an angry message, researchers looked at how likely the recipients were to also send out an angry message or retweet the same emotion. The<em> BuzzFeed<\/em> article also references a <strong>German<\/strong> <a title=\"1 11 th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, 27 th February \u2013 01 st March 2013, Leipzig, Ge rmany Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users\u2019 Life Satisfaction ? \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150210013640\/http:\/\/warhol.wiwi.hu-berlin.de\/~hkrasnova\/Ongoing_Research_files\/WI%202013%20Final%20Submission%20Krasnova.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>. The German study found that Facebook\u2019s social pressures created noticeable stress and feelings of envy. These are emotions that could, ultimately, lead to people abandoning the social network.<\/p>\n<h3>Social networks FOMO<\/h3>\n<p>A <em><a title=\"Pew Research Center\" href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Pew Research Center<\/a><\/em> <a title=\" Pew Internet Teens, Social Media, and Privacy \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140208221618\/http:\/\/pewinternet.org:80\/Reports\/2013\/Teens-Social-Media-And-Privacy\/Summary-of-Findings.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> released in May 2013 reinforces the risks Facebook faces. According to <em>BuzzFeed,<\/em> younger users told Pew the stress of needing to manage their reputation on Facebook contributes to their lack of enthusiasm for the social network. Nevertheless, the site is still where a large amount of socializing takes place. The question isn\u2019t exclusive to Facebook. In a recent survey, social media as an industry ranked third to last in consumer satisfaction. Social networks ranked below the airline industry. They state that it\u2019s not hard to imagine a future where users will demand social platforms that are not only intensely engaging but also keenly aware and respectful of how our psychological state works.<\/p>\n<p>As Madrigal notes in his post, \u201c<em>fighting the great nullness at the heart of these coercive loops should be one of the goals of technology design, use, and criticism.<\/em>\u201d Facebook has succeeded in its mission to connect the world.
