\"NVIDIA<\/a>Automakers have made a beeline for Central California<\/a> in recent years. They are setting up research and engineering facilities in the shadows of consumer electronics giants Google<\/a> (GOOG<\/a>) and Apple<\/a> (AAPL<\/a>). The Detroit Bureau<\/em><\/a> asks<\/a> if the migration be turning around? A major Silicon Valley firm, NVIDIA<\/a> (NVDA<\/a>)<\/strong>, is reversing the trend by setting up a technical center in Ann Arbor<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"NVIDIA<\/a>AnnArbor.com<\/em><\/a> reports<\/a> the tech center will initially support about 20 employees.<\/strong> They will be primarily dedicated to working with the local automotive community. Danny Shapiro, director of automotive for Santa Clara, CA<\/a>, based NVIDIA said that more work will likely be done at the center with supercomputing<\/strong> and graphics development<\/strong>. NVIDIA VP for worldwide automotive sales and Ann Arbor site leader Phil Hughes said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have software engineers, hardware engineers and field application engineers working here as well as people on the business and marketing side.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Who uses NVIDIA<\/h3>\n

Mr. Shapiro said the new facility will help the company\u2019s growing team of Michigan-based engineers and executives work with automakers and suppliers. The Michigan team will develop the next generation of i<\/strong>nfotainment, navigation, and driver assistance programs<\/strong>. NVIDIA points out that Chrysler<\/a>, Ford<\/a> (F<\/a>), General Motors<\/a> (GM<\/a>), and Volkswagen<\/a> are already using NVIDIA products in their designs. NVIDIA believes having a technology center near the heart of the auto manufacturing community in Michigan makes sense.<\/p>\n

\"Detroit<\/a>\u201cSilicon Valley is the future, Detroit is the past,<\/em>\u201d said NVIDIA’s Shapiro. \u201cThat\u2019s the conventional wisdom. Well, the conventional wisdom isn\u2019t quite right<\/strong>. We\u2019ve been investing in Michigan for years and we\u2019re accelerating these efforts by opening the Nvidia Technology Center.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Detroit Bureau<\/em> points out that NVIDIA isn\u2019t alone. Other high-tech firms opening centers in Southeast Michigan are Microsoft<\/a> (MSFT<\/a>) and Google, Mr. Shapiro noted. \u201cThis is where consumer electronics and safety advancements are being made that wil<\/em>l change the driving experience for all of us,\u201d the executive told the Detroit Bureau<\/em>. \u201cNvidia has been fueling this trend for years. A number of our employees live in the area and are working closely with car companies.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

High-tech start-ups<\/h3>\n

\"Detroit\"<\/a>While there\u2019s a small but growing presence of high-tech start-ups within the Motor City<\/a> itself, many of the firms setting up shop in Michigan have chosen to go to Ann Arbor the home of the University of Michigan<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cAll of this activity has helped make Ann Arbor a high-tech hub and not just for the Detroit area,<\/em>\u201d Shapiro noted.<\/p>\n

Michael Finney, president of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., said Nvidia already powers in-dash instrument clusters as well as navigation and information displays in more than 4 million vehicles from automakers such as Audi<\/a>, Bentley<\/a>, BMW<\/a>, Lamborghini<\/a>, Maserati<\/a>, Rolls Royce<\/a>, Tesla<\/a>, and Volkswagen<\/a>.<\/p>\n
