Earth\u00a0is worth $4,800 trillion<\/strong> according to UC-Santa Cruz<\/a> Astrophysicist Greg Laughlin. Professor Laughlin developed the value for NASA<\/a> <\/strong>to evaluate the discoveries made by NASA\u2019s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft<\/a>. He came up with the figure by calculating the sum of the planet\u2019s age, size, temperature, mass and other vital statistics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What planets are worth studying<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Professor Laughlin told<\/a> the UK’s Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> , \u201cI\u2019ve just always thought that the concept of an \u2018Earth-like planet in the habitable zone\u2019 was pretty vaguely defined,\u00a0and I wanted a metric that I could plug a planet into to see whether its value was high enough to warrant media hype<\/em>.\u201d The professor’s equation shows whether planets are worth studying, anything worth less than $97 million just isn\u2019t worth the hassle<\/strong>. The astrophysicist told the Daily Mail<\/em>, “The formula makes you realize just how precious Earth is and I hope it will help us as a society safeguard what we have.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Earth’s competition<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

There are about 1,235 known similar planets in the universe. Most planets weren\u2019t given a high price tag because of their inhospitable climates. The Daily Mail <\/em>says\u00a0Mars is worth only\u00a0$16,361<\/strong> and\u00a0Venus is worth less than a penny<\/strong>. Prior to Dr. Laughlin’s work, the most Earth-like world known to scientists, was the exoplanet<\/a> Gilese 581 c<\/a>. However, the professor’s equation valued it at just $160.<\/p>\n

The next Earth-ly object, KOI 326.01<\/strong><\/a> is worth\u00a0$223,099.93<\/strong> (KOI stands for “Kepler Object of Interest”).\u00a0\u201cThis is just a way for me to be able to quantify how excited I should be about any particular planet,<\/em>\u201d he told<\/a> TechEye<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

I wonder if the professor discounted the value of planet Earth as\u00a0damaged goods as British Petroleum destroys the Gulf of Mexico and nuclear reactors melt-down in Japan, etc..<\/em><\/p>\n
