The device is a 10-inch\u00a0<strong><a title=\"usa.asus.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASUS<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"TT : 2357\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=2357:TT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2357<\/a>) tablet running the <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"Jellybean Android\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180514004144\/https:\/\/www.android.com\/about\/jelly-bean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jellybean <strong>Android<\/strong><\/a> operating system. It comes pre-loaded with content and apps curated by Amplify. It enables teachers to distribute content across a class or grade level and control the content on students\u2019 screens.<\/p>\n<p><em>GigaOM<\/em> cites <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gcsnc.com\/\">the school district\u2019s website<\/a>, which says they have<strong> sent 10%<\/strong> of their 15,000 <strong>devices back<\/strong> to Amplify because of <strong>broken screens<\/strong>. About 2,000 cases have also been problematic. In one instance, a student returned a <strong>defective charger<\/strong>, reporting that <strong>overheating<\/strong> caused the plastic to melt. While the district said it expected a few glitches with the rollout, school officials decided to pause the program for safety&#8217;s sake. <em>GigaOM<\/em> claims the pause is a big setback for Amplify, which <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161130062935\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/03\/05\/the-future-of-digital-learning-news-corp-s-amplify-debuts-its-tablet-for-k-12-classrooms\/\">launched its education-optimized tablet<\/a> at hipster <a title=\"South by Southwest\" href=\"http:\/\/sxsw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South by Southwest<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"NewsCorp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2013\/may\/30\/rupert-murdoch-news-corp-logo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"NewsCorp\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/image.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Media\/Pix\/pictures\/2013\/5\/30\/1369897971239\/News-Corp-logo-008.jpg?resize=97%2C57&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"NewsCorp\" width=\"97\" height=\"57\" \/><\/a>Since its launch, skeptics have wondered how schools would respond to the privacy questions and the prospect of doing business with Amplify\u2019s parent company <strong>News Corp.<\/strong> (given its <a title=\"Rupertgate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/News_International_phone_hacking_scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phone-hacking scandal<\/a>). Ms. Heussner speculates that the suspension could give schools more reason for pause when it comes to embracing the new technology.<\/p>\n<p>Asus told <em>GigaOM that <\/em>out of 500,000 chargers of its kind that they have shipped globally, only the one in Guilford overheated and melted. <a title=\"Justin Hamilton\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190322080040\/https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/person\/justin-hamilton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"crunchbase noopener noreferrer\">Justin Hamilton<\/a>, Amplify\u2019s SVP of corporate communications seems to be blaming the customer. He claimed the broken screen rate in Guilford is higher than in other school districts. \u201c<em>We\u2019re working very closely with the district on this and hope to have things resolved and the program back up and running very soon<\/em>,\u201d Mr. Hamilton said.<\/p>\n<h3>Indiana mobile security fail<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170729012944\/http:\/\/www.tweaktown.com\/news\/21234\/ipad_2_smart_cover_has_security_flaw_circumvent_the_passcode_and_access_the_last_open_app_on_the_ipad_2\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107803 size-medium\" title=\"circumvented the security on district-issued Apple iPads\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_ipad_colors.jpg?resize=150%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"circumvented the security on district-issued\u00a0Apple iPads\" width=\"150\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_ipad_colors.jpg?resize=150%2C76&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_ipad_colors.jpg?resize=75%2C38&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple_ipad_colors.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>In <a title=\"Indiana\" href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uBmdm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Indiana<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"Education Week\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Education Week<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Indiana Students Quickly Outwit School iPad Security\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/DigitalEducation\/2013\/09\/indiana_students_quickly_outwi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that between 300 and 400 students in the <a title=\"Center Grove, IN school district\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centergrove.k12.in.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center Grove school district<\/a> <strong>circumvented the security<\/strong> devices on district-issued\u00a0<a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <strong><a title=\"IPad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iPads<\/a><\/strong> within hours of receiving the devices according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/\">report<\/a> last week in the <em>Daily Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, students found ways to reprogram the iPads so they could <strong>download games and apps for social media<\/strong> sites, according to the report. Center Grove officials attributed the problem to their security program not being able to handle the 2,000+ devices they distributed.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107801 size-thumbnail\" title=\"spread like wildfire\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/campfire.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"spread like wildfire\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/campfire.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/campfire.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/campfire.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/>Keith Krueger, the CEO for the <a title=\"Consortium for School Networking\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consortium_for_School_Networking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Consortium for School Networking<\/a>, said such problems are increasingly common as districts deploy an increasing number of devices. &#8220;<em>Kids and adults find ways to hack through things, and it can spread like wildfire,<\/em>&#8221; he said. &#8220;I<em>t&#8217;s frustrating, and it&#8217;s a huge challenge for any district.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Data center failures<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the tablet troubles, <em><a title=\"Data Center Knowledge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Data Center Knowledge&#8217;s<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"Rich Miller\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170701013711\/http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/author\/richm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rich Miller<\/a> <a title=\"School Districts Hit by Data Center Failures\" href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2013\/09\/11\/school-districts-hit-by-data-center-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> several school data center failures. According to <em>DCK<\/em>, two public school systems suffered data center failures that crippled their IT systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131109102935\/http:\/\/blog.intelletrace.com\/5-questions-to-ask-your-future-data-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107799\" title=\"data center fire suppression system\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_6.jpg?resize=110%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"data center fire suppression system\" width=\"110\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_6.jpg?resize=150%2C131&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_6.jpg?resize=75%2C66&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Data_center_6.jpg?w=457&amp;ssl=1 457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>In <strong><a title=\"Oregon\" href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/sH1rY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oregon<\/a><\/strong>, the <a title=\"Beaverton School District\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beaverton.k12.or.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beaverton School District<\/a> experienced several days of disruption after an errant alarm set off its <strong>data center fire suppression<\/strong> system. The fire suppression system <strong>damaged hard drives and servers<\/strong>. That left Beaverton schools unable to use <strong>email<\/strong> or access <strong>class lists<\/strong>, student schedules, and online textbooks. \u201c<em>It knocked all of the systems in the <strong>data center off-line<\/strong>,<\/em>\u201d said Steve Langford, chief technology officer. \u201cA<em>ll of the systems that staff needs to do their jobs.<\/em>\u201d District IT staff worked over the Labor Day weekend to replace the damaged systems.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/tm0dG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>California<\/strong><\/a>, the <a title=\"Davis Unified School District\" href=\"http:\/\/www.djusd.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Davis Unified School District<\/a> started school without key IT services after the district\u2019s <strong>servers overheated<\/strong>. <em>DCK<\/em> reports an a<strong>ir conditioner unit failed<\/strong>, allowing the temperature in the server room to rise to <strong>120 degrees F<\/strong>. \u201c<em>There\u2019s an incredible impact on everyone in the whole organization,<\/em>\u201d says the district\u2019s Kim Wallace. \u201c<em>Students can\u2019t access computers. Teachers can\u2019t take attendance. Parents can\u2019t email. We can\u2019t email out.<\/em>\u201d The <em>DCK<\/em> article said staff were still troubleshooting damaged equipment and lost data.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The best strategy, COSN&#8217;s Krueger said, is to combine the best possible <strong>security filters<\/strong> and other technical measures with a comprehensive responsible or <strong><a title=\"Acceptable use policy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acceptable_use_policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">acceptable use policy<\/a><\/strong> that students and families must sign and a commitment to enforcement. &#8220;It&#8217;s not surprising that a school district would have some breaches,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The question is how do you leverage it into a <a title=\"Teachable moment\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teachable_moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">teachable moment<\/a>?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Who needs the teachable moment? Sure the kids need to understand there are real consequences for their actions but, can the <del>politicians <\/del>administrators be taught to be serious about IT? Seems to me that most of these failures are management failures.
