The car has become the <strong>ultimate mobile computing platform<\/strong>. The carmakers and OEMs have begun competing to add better <strong>Internet-computing<\/strong> applications. These are some of the most interesting to me.<\/p>\n<h3>Ford Seeks to Make Cars That Talk to Each Other<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-105456\" title=\"Ford logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_Logo.png?resize=109%2C41&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ford logo\" width=\"109\" height=\"41\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_Logo.png?w=128&amp;ssl=1 128w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ford_Logo.png?resize=75%2C28&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xconomy#:~:text=In%202016%2C%20Xconomy%20was%20acquired,publishing%20arm%20(Xconomy%20Insight).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xconomy Detroit<\/a><\/em> reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford Motor Company<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F<\/a>) based in <a title=\"Dearborn, Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofdearborn.org\/\" rel=\"homepage\">Dearborn, MI<\/a> is designing vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems designed to prevent accidents. Ford&#8217;s \u201cintelligent\u201d vehicles can wirelessly transmit data between each other, such as location, speed, proximity, and brake status. Guided by sensors and cameras, the system can alert drivers to nearby accidents, or signal if they risk colliding with another vehicle at an intersection. \u201cIt\u2019s like having a 360-degree pair of eyes,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130502043729\/http:\/\/media.ford.com\/article_display.cfm?article_id=33970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Shulman<\/a>, technical leader for Ford Research and Advanced Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Ford&#8217;s goal is to have intelligent cars on the road by 2016. \u201cWe kind of like to get it out as soon as we can,\u201d Mr. Shulman says. <a href=\"http:\/\/detroit.cbslocal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS <em>News<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/detroit.cbslocal.com\/2011\/01\/26\/ford-accelerates-intelligent-vehicle-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that Ford\u2019s demonstration vehicles will hit the road this spring, starting at major technology hubs across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s work is part of an effort spearheaded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dot.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Department of Transportation<\/a> called <a href=\"http:\/\/ops.fhwa.dot.gov\/travelinfo\/infostructure\/aboutinfo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IntelliDrive<\/a> (<em>Which I first <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-8N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> about in 2009<\/em>). IntelliDrive&#8217;s goal is to develop a common communications platform for all vehicles to talk to each other, using 3G and 4G broadband technologies. IntelliDrive also envisions building infrastructure across the country that allows cars to \u201ccommunicate\u201d with roads, highways, and bridges, exchanging information on traffic patterns, road conditions, and weather. \u201cIntelliDrive will help drivers bypass congestion, and it will cut crashes by providing advanced safety warnings,\u201d according to a report by the Center for Automotive Research (<a title=\"Center for Automotive Research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cargroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAR<\/a>), a research group based in <a title=\"Ann Arbor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.a2gov.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Ann Arbor, MI<\/a>. \u201cIt will even be able to take over the vehicle when there is not enough time for the driver to react.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the technology could lead to cars that drive themselves, Mr. Shulman says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) is already testing such a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/10\/science\/10google.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">car<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Microsoft Wants to Be in Your Car<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-105458\" title=\"Microsoft logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/microsoft_logo_old-1.jpg?resize=127%2C21&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Microsoft logo\" width=\"127\" height=\"21\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/microsoft_logo_old-1.jpg?resize=150%2C25&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/microsoft_logo_old-1.jpg?resize=75%2C12&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/microsoft_logo_old-1.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 127px) 100vw, 127px\" \/><\/a>Ron Miller at <a title=\"Internet Evolution\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140301214902\/http:\/\/www.internetevolution.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Internet Evolution<\/em><\/a> recently posted an article that shows how <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) reputation in the auto industry has changed. Several years ago, there was a<a title=\"Software Tips and Tricks\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160316083523\/http:\/\/www.softwaretipsandtricks.com\/windowsxp\/articles\/624\/1\/If-Microsoft-Built-Cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> joke<\/a> being emailed around about what would happen if Microsoft built cars the way it built Windows. At the 2011 <a title=\"CEBIT\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240325084825\/https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/farewell-to-cebit-the-most-hated-tech-trade-show-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CeBIT<\/a> technology fair, there were examples of Microsoft in cars according to Mr. Miller.<\/p>\n<p>The author points out that MSFT was showing off a Microsoft-centric, fully electric <a title=\"Smart Car\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a27310639\/smart-fortwo-discontinued-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smart Car<\/a> with its control center as an app on your <a title=\"Windows Phone 7\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110823124123\/http:\/\/www.windowsphone7.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Windows 7 phone<\/a> and not on the dash. The WP7 devices would display metrics such as the amount of power left in your battery, the expected distance you can travel for the amount of power on your battery, even the distances based on current battery life that are safe to reach, possible to reach, and questionable &#8212; all color-coded on a Bing map. Since it&#8217;s a phone the car can be monitored from anywhere there is a cell signal.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Internet Evolution<\/em> article points out a second example of bringing Microsoft to the car. At CeBIT, <a title=\"Ford Motor Company\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Ford<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : F\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F<\/a>) CEO <a title=\"Alan Mulally\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Mulally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Alan Mulally<\/a> was touting <a title=\"Ford Sync\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ford.com\/technology\/sync\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Ford SYNC<\/a>, powered by Microsoft, the communications solution now being installed in Ford cars. Mr. Mulally wants to see the Ford automobiles be the &#8220;ultimate mobile device&#8221; according to the article.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mulally described a system based on Microsoft&#8217;s next-gen unified communications product <a title=\"Microsoft Lync\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120207001058\/http:\/\/lync.microsoft.com:80\/en-us\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lync<\/a> using <a title=\"Nuance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nuance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nuance<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ ; NAUN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2022\/microsofts-19-7b-nuance-deal-is-finally-final-nearly-a-year-after-it-was-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUAN<\/a>) voice recognition to enable users to interact with the car and the mobile telephone sitting in the car&#8217;s cradle via voice commands, letting drivers keep both hands on the wheel while accessing features. It will also eventually offer direct access to emergency services, not a call center as with <a title=\"General Motors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">GM&#8217;s<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : GM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-GM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GM<\/a>) <a title=\"OnStar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">OnStar<\/a> service.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mulally says Ford made a conscious decision not to embed the Microsoft Lync system with the car&#8217;s other systems. He was careful to point out that the systems that run the car are separated from Lync by a firewall. While Ford and others have worked on car-to-car communications systems for a number of years, the consortium reflects the fact that vehicles from different brands must be able to speak the same digital language. \u201cWe need to get messages from Hondas, Hyundais, Kias and send them all messages,\u201d said Mr. Shulman.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the eight makers will build eight new vehicles each equipped with the latest technology. Vehicle platooning is a convoy of vehicles, where a driver in a lead vehicle drives a line of other vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>SARTRE will use a forward-looking camera and 76 GHz radar. Each vehicle must also be equipped with a local control system.
