She says that larger iPad efforts have seen a \u201c<strong>high rate of failure<\/strong>,\u201d which she blamed on a <strong>lack of planning<\/strong>.\u201cWe see precious little of that,\u201d she said. (<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> I wrote how about the failure of leadership on these projects <a title=\"LA iPads Hacked In A Week\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-fFY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"More Tech Trouble for Schools\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-fZ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/em>) Ms. Wilson applauded Mr. Carvalho\u2019s decision to step back and look at others\u2019 pitfalls. \u201c<em>When Miami-Dade&#8217;s superintendent says \u2018I\u2019m pushing the pause button,\u2019 I say bravo. There\u2019s no reason not to get this right,<\/em>\u201d Ms. Wilson said.<\/p>\n<h3>Troubled school tablet projects<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the troubled school tablet projects across the country, The <em>Herald<\/em> says <strong>board members push<\/strong> Superintendent Carvalho <strong>to move forward<\/strong>. \u201cI hope we will not be delayed in terms of getting devices into kids\u2019 hands as soon as possible,\u201d said School Board Member Carlos Curbelo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/projectfailures\/cio-analysis-why-37-percent-of-projects-fail\/12565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106229 size-medium\" title=\"sticker shock\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/risks_ahead.jpg?resize=150%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"sticker shock\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/risks_ahead.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/risks_ahead.jpg?resize=75%2C50&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/risks_ahead.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>LAUSD&#8217;s Apple iPad experiment still seems in shambles, costs have just jumped 14%. The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LA Times<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/la-me-ipads-cost-20131022,0,6559073.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <a title=\"IPad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iPads<\/a> will <strong>cost nearly $100 more<\/strong> apiece \u2014 or $770 per tablet. The earlier lower cost estimate for each iPad &#8220;preceded the actual procurement process,&#8221; the district said in response to questions from <em>The LA Times<\/em>. &#8220;The negotiated discount [i.e. $678] does not go into effect until the district has reached the $400-million spending threshold. &#8220;This sticker shock can be avoided, but only after the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.lausd.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L.A. Unified School District<\/a> has spent at least $400 million for the devices. In other words, the district would have to buy nearly 520,000 iPads before getting lower prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other cost increases<\/strong> announced included <strong>classroom carts<\/strong>, that charge the iPads and keep them secure, cost rose for this first phase rose from $2.6 million to $3.2 million, according to the paper. The<strong> iPad curriculum<\/strong> from <a title=\"Pearson Education Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pearson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pearson Education Inc.<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE | PSO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-PSO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PSO<\/a>) is still being developed and<strong> not available<\/strong> to those schools that have received their iPads. It is unclear if LAUSD will receive a credit from Pearson for late delivery or if it will ever be available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enterpriseirregulars.com\/24102\/twelve-early-warning-signs-of-it-project-failure\/?ModPagespeed=noscript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106231\" title=\"Project management fail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bassett.jpg?resize=111%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Project management fail\" width=\"111\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bassett.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bassett.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bassett.jpg?w=425&amp;ssl=1 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/a>Another topic at the same meeting was the progress in preparing the schools for iPads. The district reported less than half a percent (<strong>40 of the over 1,000 school network<\/strong>) of the schools&#8217; <strong>Wi-Fi infrastructure was upgraded <\/strong>for the iPads<strong> &#8211; <\/strong>so far. (<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> I wonder if they have addressed the <a title=\"Bonjour, Zeroconf, Rendezvous \u2013 Why Three Names for the Same Thing ?\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160709140622\/http:\/\/etherealmind.com:80\/bonjour-zeroconf-rendezvous-why-three-names-for-the-same-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proprietary<\/a> Apple <a title=\"Apple Bonjour\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150622050827\/http:\/\/searchconsumerization.techtarget.com:80\/definition\/Apple-Bonjour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bonjour<\/a> issue, and how they are going to limit the number of devices (Apple TVs, Printers, other iPads, Mac&#8217;s etc.<\/em>) that can be selected.<\/p>\n<p>LA parents also have expressed confusion about their responsibility for the devices. That shift is relatively small, about $550,000 at this point, although it&#8217;s unclear whether more expenses would be transferred in the future. The price per device, higher than retail, includes a protective case, a limited three-year warranty, technical assistance and training, and one <a id=\"PRDCES00049\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"Apple TV\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170830162645\/https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/product\/apple-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple TV<\/a> setup per 20 students.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>LA Times<\/em> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/la-me-1015-ipads-schools-20131015,0,7382429.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that these problems have prompted f<strong>our LA schools to opt-out<\/strong> of the troubled program. When I spoke with educational &#8220;leaders&#8221; about what they were going to do with the iPads they wanted to implement them without solid articulated plans.
