The report is from <a title=\"Arbor Networks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arbornetworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arbor Networks<\/a> a leading provider of DDoS and advanced threat protection solutions for enterprise and service provider networks. Arbor has noted an alarming increase in distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack sizes this year. The <a title=\"Arbor Networks ATLAS\" href=\"http:\/\/atlas.arbor.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arbor Networks ATLAS<\/a> monitors a significant part of all Internet traffic and found that <span class=\"zem_slink\">DDoS attack<\/span> size accelerating rapidly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220124025508\/https:\/\/xconomy.com\/boston\/2009\/10\/20\/arbor-networks-reports-on-the-rise-of-the-internet-hyper-giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107780\" title=\"Arbor Networks logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/arbor_networks_logo-1.png?resize=101%2C35&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Arbor Networks logo\" width=\"101\" height=\"35\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/arbor_networks_logo-1.png?resize=75%2C26&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/arbor_networks_logo-1.png?resize=150%2C52&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/arbor_networks_logo-1.png?w=238&amp;ssl=1 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\" \/><\/a>54% of attacks year to date are over 1 Gbps.<\/li>\n<li>37% of attacks this year are in the 2 \u2013 10 Gbps range.<\/li>\n<li>4% of all attacks are over 10 Gbps.<\/li>\n<li>The 2013 average DDoS attack is 2.64 Gbps, up 78% from 2012.<\/li>\n<li>The largest monitored and verified attack size was 191 Gbps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>DDoS Attack Map Tool<\/h3>\n<p>One way to visualize what these facts mean is the <a title=\"DDoS Attack Map Tool\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalattackmap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DDoS Attack Map Tool<\/a> pointed out by <em><a title=\"Brad Reese\" href=\"http:\/\/bradreese.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Reese.com<\/a><\/em>. The tool, built by a collaboration between Arbor Networks and think tank <a title=\"Google Ideas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/ideas\/projects\/digital-attack-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Ideas<\/a> presents a global map with a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Data visualization\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210506064418\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/data-visualization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">data visualization<\/a> map of global distributed denial of service attacks. Google Ideas uses anonymous data from Arbor Networks&#8217; ATLAS global threat monitoring systems. Atlas can monitor up to 69 Tbps of Internet traffic. Researchers and users can use the DDoS Attack Map Tool to explore historical trends in DDoS attacks. They can make their own connection to related news events on any given day.
