(<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> there is likely lots of enterprise data as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160608213226\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FierceMobileIT<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140331080425\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/story\/mobile-workers-bypass-it-file-sharing\/2013-11-06?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that 72 percent of workers are using free file-sharing services without authorization.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131202211328\/http:\/\/cloudtimes.org\/2012\/07\/14\/networks-obsolete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103073\" title=\"Cloud computing\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_skills.jpg?resize=137%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cloud computing\" width=\"137\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_skills.jpg?resize=150%2C110&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_skills.jpg?resize=75%2C55&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_skills.jpg?w=260&amp;ssl=1 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/><\/a><strong>MegaCloud<\/strong> had offered customers up to 8GB of free cloud storage, with another 8GB of free backup storage. That 16GB of free cloud storage was one of the largest giveaways of cloud storage from a consumer cloud provider. MegaCloud offered a desktop client, as well as mobile apps for\u00a0<a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <a title=\"IOS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iOS<\/a>, <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"Android\" href=\"http:\/\/www.android.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android<\/a>, and <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) <a title=\"Windows phones\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoftstore.com\/store?Action=cat&amp;Locale=en_US&amp;SiteID=msusa&amp;Windows-Phone=&amp;categoryID=62685000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows phones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of September, San Jos\u00e9, CA-based<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a title=\"Nirvanix\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131123110535\/http:\/\/www.nirvanix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Nirvanix<\/a><\/strong> cloud provider gave their mostly business customers <strong>2-weeks notice<\/strong> to get their files back before they went dark, taking all the data with them. There are reports that Nirvanix hosted around <strong>40 petabytes of data<\/strong>. Getting their data out in time must have challenged Nirvanix customers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cloudberrylab.com\/cloud-migrator.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103075\" title=\"Moving data from cloud to cloud\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_2_cloud.png?resize=100%2C118&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Moving data from cloud to cloud\" width=\"100\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_2_cloud.png?resize=127%2C150&amp;ssl=1 127w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_2_cloud.png?resize=64%2C75&amp;ssl=1 64w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_2_cloud.png?w=144&amp;ssl=1 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Charles Babcock\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131109213804\/http:\/\/www.informationweek.com:80\/authors\/Charles-Babcock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Babcock<\/a> at<em> <a title=\"InformationWeek\" href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">InformationWeek<\/a><\/em> explained in an intriguing <a title=\"Nirvanix Tells Cloud Storage Customers: Move Your Data\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131105131034\/http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/cloud-computing\/infrastructure\/nirvanix-tells-cloud-storage-customers-m\/240161429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> that data movements in the cloud are dependent on the speed with which the service provider can write data to an external source and the amount of bandwidth made available to do so. He cited <a title=\"Nasuni Test Uncovers Dangers of Cloud Storage Provider Lock-in \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131202213214\/http:\/\/www.nasuni.com\/news\/press_releases\/52-nasuni_test_uncovers_dangers_of_cloud_storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tests<\/a> by Nirvanix competitor, <a title=\"Nasuni\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nasuni.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nasuni<\/a>, which found that <strong>moving 12 TB of data<\/strong> from one\u00a0<a title=\"Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : AMZN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMZN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMZN<\/a>) <a title=\"Amazon S3\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161106223142\/https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/product\/amazon-s3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"crunchbase nofollow noopener noreferrer\">S3<\/a> bucket to another took four hours. Moving the same amount from Amazon S3 to\u00a0Microsoft <a title=\"Windows Azure\" href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsazure.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Azure<\/a> took 40 hours, and from S3 to <a title=\"RackSpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rackspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rackspace<\/a> (<a title=\"HYSE | RAX\" href=\"https:\/\/investorplace.com\/2016\/08\/rackspace-hosting-inc-rax-stock-apollo-global-buyout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RAX<\/a>), <strong>just<\/strong> <strong>under one week<\/strong>. Moving data from Rackspace into Amazon took only five hours.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a title=\"Data Center Knowledge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Data Center Knowledge<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2013\/09\/30\/nirvanix-collapse-provides-stress-test-for-cloud-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, <a title=\"Gartner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/home.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : IT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:IT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IT<\/a>) analyst <a title=\"Kyle Hilgendorf \" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/AnalystBiography?authorId=39410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Hilgendorf<\/a> reinforces my point that cloud meltdowns should prompt cloud users to get serious about <strong>contingency planning<\/strong>. Gartner&#8217;s Hilgendorf wrote in a <a title=\"Cloud Exit Strategies \u2013 You DO need them!\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230609071524\/https:\/\/blogs.gartner.com\/kyle-hilgendorf\/2013\/09\/18\/cloud-exit-strategies-you-do-need-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210514194508\/https:\/\/gcn.com\/articles\/2013\/08\/27\/cloud-exit-strategy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103077 size-medium\" title=\"Exit plan\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/escape_maze-e1567559522295-73x150.png?resize=73%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Exit plan\" width=\"73\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/escape_maze-e1567559522295.png?resize=73%2C150&amp;ssl=1 73w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/escape_maze-e1567559522295.png?resize=36%2C75&amp;ssl=1 36w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/escape_maze-e1567559522295.png?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 73px) 100vw, 73px\" \/><\/a>\u201cCloud exits are not nearly as sexy as cloud deployments \u2013 they are an afterthought &#8230;\u00a0 It\u2019s analogous to disaster recovery and other mundane IT <strong>risk mitigation responsibilities<\/strong>. These functions rarely receive the attention they deserve in IT, except for immediately following major events like Hurricane Sandy or 9\/11.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIf you are a customer of any other cloud service (that is basically all of us) \u2013 take some time and <strong>build a cloud exit strategy\/plan<\/strong> for every service you depend upon,\u201d he added. \u201cCloud providers will continue to go out of business. It may not be a frequent occurrence, but it will happen. \u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Nicos Vekiarides\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140306063610\/http:\/\/www.crunchbase.com:80\/person\/nicos-vekiarides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"crunchbase noopener noreferrer\">Nicos Vekiarides<\/a>, co-founder and CEO of Natick, MA-based cloud storage provider <a title=\"TwinStrata\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240614194944\/https:\/\/www.twinstrata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">TwinStrata<\/a> <a title=\"Don&#039;t Live in Fear of Your Cloud Storage Provider Going Under \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131006051916\/http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/research\/2013\/100313-don39t-live-in-fear-of-274479.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <em>NetWorkWorld<\/em> that in the long-term, the <strong>economic draw of the cloud<\/strong> should overcome the fear and hesitancy of many businesses considering cloud storage solutions He predicts that the shut-downs will drive businesses toward larger, better-known cloud storage brands instead of to smaller, newer providers. He says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191230201732\/http:\/\/common-phobias.com:80\/Nepho\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103079 size-medium\" title=\"Afraid of clouds\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nephophobia-1.jpg?resize=150%2C35&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Afraid of clouds\" width=\"150\" height=\"35\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nephophobia-1.jpg?resize=150%2C35&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nephophobia-1.jpg?resize=75%2C17&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nephophobia-1.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The storage needs of businesses haven&#8217;t gone away. Organizations&#8217; data <strong>storage requirements still are growing at 40 percent to 60 percent a year<\/strong> &#8230; What will change is how CIOs shop for and deploy cloud services, in that everyone still wants choice, but they&#8217;ll be much more wary. There&#8217;s always the need for choice among a number of vendors, and CIOs will want the best of breed. That might mean they will gravitate toward more established vendors.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These events may put a few firms off the cloud, but not all. These events should point out the need for <strong>due diligence<\/strong> when planning what to do with their data.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Posts by Barb Darrow\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140820123417\/http:\/\/gigaom.com\/author\/barb-darrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author noopener noreferrer\">Barb Darrow<\/a> at <a title=\"GigaOM\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GigaOM<\/a> <a title=\"Cloud customers have bigger worries than NSA gate\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220118141612\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/09\/20\/cloud-customers-have-bigger-worries-than-nsa-gate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> it most <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/about\/computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"data center noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Data center\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.cern\/sites\/home.web.cern.ch\/files\/image\/about_section_page\/2013\/01\/cern-servers.jpg?resize=200%2C123&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Data center\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a>poetically, &#8220;cloud storage offerings have multiplied like rabbits over the past year, and the notion that you could entrust business data to a company that appears to be\u00a0well-funded\u00a0only to see it shutting its doors could be more paranoia-inducing than the NSA spooks.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>IMHO, continuity plans need to account for data in the cloud. Cloud providers can offer better availability and redundancy, but still pose risks. But do they guarantee your data?\u00a0 Continuity plans need to protect complete business services, including parts that may rely on a cloud piece.\u00a0 Some of the questions I would ask:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Does it make sense to have all data in the cloud?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Is the firm&#8217;s data categorized so that when another cloud provider folds, IT can spend any time they have moving data to another provider? Mr. Babcock demonstrated that move would not be instantaneous.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can the data even be brought back in-house? Did you throw out your old SAN when the data was moved to the cloud?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What format is the data in?
