Fortinet surveyed 3,200 employees between the ages of 21 and 32 on their attitudes and practices around BYOD and found that 51 percent of respondents said they would <strong>ignore formal BYOD policies<\/strong> at their organization.\u00a0 &#8220;<em>It&#8217;s worrying to see policy contravention so high &#8230;<\/em>&#8221; Fortinet VP of Marketing John Maddison said <strong>in the study report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gen Y staff<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150103114207\/http:\/\/www.nightclub.com:80\/bar-management\/consumer-trends\/the-millennial-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100735 \" title=\"Gen Y\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/millennials-e1566084580167-150x96.jpg?resize=141%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Gen Y\" width=\"141\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/millennials-e1566084580167.jpg?resize=150%2C96&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/millennials-e1566084580167.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/millennials-e1566084580167.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><\/a>The same Fortinet survey revealed that 55 percent said they have been the <strong>victims of cyberattacks<\/strong> on their desktops or laptops. The respondents noted that those attacks had affected their productivity and potentially cost them <strong>corporate or personal data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"FierceCIO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercecio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FierceCIO<\/a><\/em> provides another <a title=\"Most employees don&#039;t view taking corporate data as stealing\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150918223437\/http:\/\/www.fiercecio.com\/story\/most-employees-dont-view-taking-corporate-data-stealing\/2013-11-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">example<\/a> of staff&#8217;s cavalier attitude towards data security from Symantec. According to the <a title=\"Mountain View, California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.3894444444,-122.081944444&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=37.3894444444,-122.081944444%20%28Mountain%20View%2C%20California%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Mountain View, <\/a>CA-based\u00a0<a title=\"Symantec\" href=\"https:\/\/securitycloud.symantec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Symantec<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : SYMC\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-pra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SYMC<\/a>) when it comes to corporate data, employees who feel like they live in a &#8220;<strong>finder&#8217;s keepers<\/strong>&#8221; environment, Robert Hamilton, Symantec director of information risk management said. The firm surveyed workers in the U.S. about taking corporate data outside of the workplace if they would use company information in another job and their views on whether that constituted stealing. <em>FierceCIO<\/em> reports the results of the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.symantec.com\/connect\/blogs\/what-s-yours-mine-how-employees-are-putting-your-intellectual-property-risk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.symantec.com\/connect\/blogs\/what-s-yours-mine-how-employees-are-putting-your-intellectual-property-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a>, were not encouraging to IT security professionals and IT management.<\/p>\n<h3>Finder&#8217;s keepers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100738 \" title=\"Data theft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_thief-1.jpg?resize=89%2C134&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Data theft\" width=\"89\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_thief-1.jpg?resize=100%2C150&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_thief-1.jpg?resize=50%2C75&amp;ssl=1 50w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_thief-1.jpg?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 89px) 100vw, 89px\" \/>40% of employees <strong>download work files<\/strong> to personal devices,<\/li>\n<li>40% of employees plan to use old company information in a <strong>new job role,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>56% of employees do not believe it is a crime to use a <strong>competitor&#8217;s trade secrets,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>68% of employees say their company doesn&#8217;t take proper steps to <strong>protect sensitive information.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mr. Hamilton summarized, &#8220;<em>The attitude is that ownership lies with the person that created it, not with the company that employs them.<\/em>&#8221; He says companies need to do a better job of <strong>safeguarding data from employees<\/strong>, especially with the growing popularity of <strong>BYOD<\/strong>. Symantec noted,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><em>Only 38 percent of employees say their managers view data protection as a business priority, and 51 percent think it is acceptable to take corporate data because their company does not strictly enforce policies<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161010061936\/http:\/\/www.tomsitpro.com\/articles\/secure-file-sharing-syncing,2-645.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100741 \" title=\"File sharing\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_synch-e1566084675942-140x150.jpg?resize=90%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"File sharing\" width=\"90\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_synch-e1566084675942.jpg?resize=140%2C150&amp;ssl=1 140w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_synch-e1566084675942.jpg?resize=70%2C75&amp;ssl=1 70w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cloud_synch-e1566084675942.jpg?w=358&amp;ssl=1 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 90px) 100vw, 90px\" \/><\/a>A <a title=\"72% of employees stuck with unauthorized file sharing services\" href=\"http:\/\/www.workshare.com\/company\/news\/press-releases\/72-of-employees-stuck-with-unauthorized-file-sharing-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a> by mobile file-sharing app provider <a title=\"WorkShare\" href=\"http:\/\/www.workshare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Workshare<\/a> provides more evidence of how <strong>employees flaunt IT policies<\/strong> by\u00a0using free <strong>file-sharing services<\/strong> to store and share corporate documents from their mobile devices. <a title=\"FierceMobileIT\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160608213226\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>FierceMobileIT<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Mobile workers bypass IT on file sharing\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140331080425\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/story\/mobile-workers-bypass-it-file-sharing\/2013-11-06?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the firm&#8217;s survey revealed that 81% of employees <strong>access work documents from their mobile devices<\/strong>. A disturbing 72% of workers are using free file-sharing services <strong>without authorization from their IT departments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IBM Acquires Cloud EMM Vendor Fiberlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maribellopez\/2013\/11\/13\/ibm-acquires-cloud-emm-vendor-fiberlink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiberlink<\/a> recently conducted a survey of its customers about what apps they are blacklisting and whitelisting. <a title=\"Dropbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dropbox.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DropBox<\/strong><\/a> <a title=\"Enterprises split on Dropbox file sharing app, finds Fiberlink\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151127033847\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com\/story\/enterprises-split-dropbox-file-sharing-app-finds-fiberlink\/2013-06-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appeared at the top<\/a> of the <strong>blacklisted<\/strong> apps lists for both Android and iOS devices. Commenting on the results, Fiberlink CEO Christopher Clark <a title=\"Q&amp;A with Christopher Clark of Fiberlink\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140807080120\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/story\/qa-christopher-clark-fiberlink\/2013-09-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <em>FierceMobileIT<\/em>: &#8220;<em>I think there are other ways besides DropBox or Box to do apps and content management<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100743 \" title=\"personal USB devices\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/usb-sticks--e1566084748748-150x127.jpg?resize=106%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"personal USB devices\" width=\"106\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/usb-sticks--e1566084748748.jpg?resize=150%2C127&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/usb-sticks--e1566084748748.jpg?resize=75%2C64&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/usb-sticks--e1566084748748.jpg?w=387&amp;ssl=1 387w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/>Work documents on personal devices<\/h3>\n<p>Another <a title=\"U.S. workers store corporate documents on personal devices, consumer cloud services, survey finds\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131015050513\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/story\/us-workers-store-corporate-documents-personal-devices-consumer-cloud-servic\/2013-05-31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a>, conducted by <a title=\"Ipsos MORI\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170330191808\/https:\/\/www.ipsos-mori.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Ipsos MORI<\/a> for <a title=\"Huddle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/uk-startup-huddle-is-selling-to-turnriver-for-an-estimated-89-million-2017-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huddle<\/a> found that 91% of U.S. office workers <strong>store work documents on personal devices<\/strong>, such as USB drives, and 38% store documents on <strong>consumer file-sharing services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>FierceMobileIT <\/em>reports that Dropbox is the most used consumer file-sharing service for work document storage and sharing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Dropbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DropBox<\/a> 16%<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"Google Drive\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Drive<\/a> 15%<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <a title=\"ICloud\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icloud.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">iCloud<\/a> 12%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patrice Perche, Fortinet&#8217;s senior <a title=\"View author profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160606052541\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/author\/fdonovan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author noopener noreferrer\">Fred Donovan<\/a> VP for international sales and support, said in the report:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This year&#8217;s research reveals the issues faced by organizations when attempting to enforce policies around BYOD, cloud application usage, and soon the adoption of new connected technologies. The study highlights the greater challenge IT managers face when it comes to knowing where corporate data resides and how it is being accessed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>FierceMobileIT&#8217;s <\/em> <a title=\"Fred Donovan\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160606052541\/http:\/\/www.fiercemobileit.com:80\/author\/fdonovan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author noopener noreferrer\">Fred Donovan<\/a> warns that enterprises need to educate their employees to combat the security risks of using consumer file-sharing services. He also says that employers need to offer enterprise-sanctioned file-sharing alternatives. Otherwise, employees will continue to bypass IT policies and put corporate data at risk. Symantec&#8217;s Hamilton told <em>FierceCIO<\/em> that firms need to undergo a cultural shift if they are going to win the battle of protecting their assets from their own staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><a title=\"Sharon Nelson\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sharonnelsonesq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sharon Nelson<\/a> at <a title=\"Generation Y Users Treat BYOD Rules With Contempt\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210423000731\/https:\/\/ridethelightning.senseient.com\/2013\/11\/generation-y-users-treat-byod-rules-with-contempt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ride the Lighting<\/a> sums up my thoughts on the BYOD thing. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I have never understood the arrogance of this attitude or the failure to appreciate that employers have a duty to impose rules to protect client\/customer\/proprietary data.\/proprietary data.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It is common for each succeeding generation to despair of the generation that follows it, but I confess to a certain amount of despair for a generation that is so tied to their mobile devices that they cannot balance their desire to use their devices with the duty owed to the employer to keep work data secure.
