The tech titans like <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>), Facebook, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com.\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) hire former feds to protect their turf while their web 2.0 applications attract attention from lawmakers and regulators concerned about issues like privacy, competition, pricing, and other aspects of the online economy.<\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-tech\/post\/tech_firms_hiring_white_house_staffers\/2011\/03\/29\/AFgY75tB_blog.html?wprss=post-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tech Firms Capture White House Staffers<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/review.chicagobooth.edu\/public-policy\/2017\/article\/should-we-stop-revolving-door\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109972\" title=\"Tech Firms Hiring White House Staffers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/political_revolving_door.png?resize=110%2C94&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tech Firms Hiring White House Staffers\" width=\"110\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/political_revolving_door.png?resize=150%2C128&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/political_revolving_door.png?resize=75%2C64&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/political_revolving_door.png?w=542&amp;ssl=1 542w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThese companies are at the crosshairs of privacy and policy issues and they see people in the White House and federal government as protectors of their plans to expand into new markets,\u201d Jeffrey Chester, an online privacy advocate and executive director of the <a title=\"Center for Digital Democracy\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221206002256\/https:\/\/www.democraticmedia.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Digital Democracy<\/a> <a title=\"washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/posttech\/2010\/06\/facebook_snags_white_house_eco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThese are uber influence-makers they are hiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three examples of this in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> article are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Google\u2019s green energy initiative hired consultant Colin Crowell, who is both a former senior adviser to the FCC\u2019s chairman and a former aide to Rep. <a title=\"Ed Markey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Markey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Edward J. Markey<\/a> (D-Mass.).<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"AT&amp;T\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AT%26T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">AT&amp;T&#8217;s<\/a> (<a title=\"www.nyse.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>) lobbying leader James Cicconi, is a former staffer for <a title=\"George Bush\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/presidents\/georgewbush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"myspace noopener noreferrer\">George W. Bush<\/a>. Mr. Cicconi has a long track record of regulatory success at the FCC and approval of several mergers for AT&amp;T.<\/li>\n<li>AT&amp;T also hired Bill Clinton spokesman <a title=\"Mike McCurry (press secretary)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_McCurry_%28press_secretary%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Mike McCurry<\/a> heads Arts &amp; Labs, a group that has lobbied against Internet access rules known as net neutrality, for AT&amp;T, Verizon and cable companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-tech\/post\/facebook-hires-former-white-house-spokesman\/2011\/06\/14\/AGhQbBVH_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook Hires Former Clinton Spokesman<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109962 size-full\" title=\"Facebook logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/facebook_icon-4.jpg?resize=59%2C58&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Facebook logo\" width=\"59\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a>The <em><a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-tech\/post\/facebook-hires-former-white-house-spokesman\/2011\/06\/14\/AGhQbBVH_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> recently hired former Clinton White House spokesman <a title=\"Joe Lockhart\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141016205821\/http:\/\/www.gloverparkgroup.com:80\/our-team\/joe-lockhart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Lockhart<\/a> to its communications team, as the company faces increased scrutiny caused by the company\u2019s global expansion and treatment of data shared by the site\u2019s more than 600 million users and its privacy practices. Mr. Lockhart, who served as press secretary for <a title=\"Bill Clinton\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/william-j-clinton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"myspace noopener noreferrer\">President Bill Clinton<\/a> will be vice president of global communications. Mr. Lockhart will be located at the company\u2019s Silicon Valley headquarters and report to Elliott Schrage, VP of global communications, marketing, and public policy.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has also hired former George W. Bush deputy chief of staff, Joel Kaplan,<a title=\"dealbook.nytimes.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210304225944\/https:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/26\/facebook-taps-joel-kaplan-to-head-washington-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>to head its D.C. federal lobbying and policy shop. The Facebook office had just one employee in 2007 and now has a dozen on staff.<\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-tech\/post\/larry-summers-to-join-silicon-valley-venture-firm\/2011\/06\/29\/AGQpmBrH_blog.html?wprss=post-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Summers to Join VC Firm<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/a16z.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109964\" title=\"Andreesen Horowitz logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/andreesenhorowitz_logo.jpg?resize=110%2C53&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Andreesen Horowitz logo\" width=\"110\" height=\"53\" \/><\/a>Silicon Valley venture fund <a title=\"www.crunchbase.com\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andreessen_Horowitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreesen Horowitz<\/a> has added former White House economic director <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111216142933\/http:\/\/www.whorunsgov.com:80\/Profiles\/Lawrence_H._Summers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Summers<\/a> as an exclusive &#8220;long-term&#8221; special adviser. <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-tech\/post\/larry-summers-to-join-silicon-valley-venture-firm\/2011\/06\/29\/AGQpmBrH_blog.html?wprss=post-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pmarca.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Marc Andreesen<\/a>, a co-founder of the venture capital investment firm, said the appointment brings the former government official\u2019s international economic expertise to a fast-changing high-tech industry where Internet companies are quickly expanding overseas and fundamentally changing the way business markets work. Summers doesn\u2019t have experience in tech, but that\u2019s not why the venture firm wants him, they said. As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/21\/AR2010092104828.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">former Treasury secretary and a noted economist<\/a>, the venture firm wants his economic knowledge to help companies think more broadly about how they can break into new markets and bring their services to various industries.<\/p>\n<p>Andreesen Horowitz, with investments in <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, <a title=\"Digg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.digg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digg<\/a>, and <a title=\"Zynga\" href=\"https:\/\/zyngagames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zynga<\/a>, said Mr.Summers will receive \u201clong-term\u201d compensation, which would probably include a stake in companies or the fund, but Andreesen declined to give more details on their arrangement.<\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"www.politico.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0611\/56660.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T Gave Cash to Merger Backers<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109967\" title=\"ATT logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-5.jpg?resize=70%2C68&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ATT logo\" width=\"70\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-5.jpg?resize=75%2C73&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/att_logo-5.jpg?w=116&amp;ssl=1 116w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 70px) 100vw, 70px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Eliza Krigman\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211016071916\/https:\/\/www.politico.com\/reporters\/ElizaKrigman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eliza Krigman<\/a> at <a title=\"Politico.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">P<em>OLITICO.com<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"Politico.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0611\/56660.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports that<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>) is lining up support for its <a title=\"www.zdnet.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/mobile-news\/at-t-t-mobile-merger-what-the-players-say\/3044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquisition<\/a> of <a title=\"T-Mobile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">T-Mobile<\/a> from a slew of groups with no obvious interest in telecom deals, except that they\u2019ve received big piles of AT&amp;T\u2019s cash.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T says it supports nonprofit groups because it\u2019s the right thing to do \u2014 and not because of any quid pro quo. \u201cFor decades, AT&amp;T has proudly supported numerous diverse groups and organizations,\u201d a company spokesperson told <em>POLITICO<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone\u2019s buying it according to the article, \u201cThe money that nonprofits receive from their corporate sponsors sticks not only in their bank accounts but in their minds,\u201d Ellen Miller, executive director of the <a title=\"Sunlight Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sunlightfoundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Sunlight Foundation<\/a>, told\u00a0<em>POLITICO<\/em><em>.com<\/em>. \u201cThis is what I think of as deep lobbying \u2014 there is an expectation that when push comes to shove, these groups will come out in favor of their benefactors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109969\" title=\"Politico logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/politico_logo.gif?resize=109%2C29&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Politico logo\" width=\"109\" height=\"29\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/politico_logo.gif?resize=75%2C20&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/politico_logo.gif?resize=150%2C40&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 109px) 100vw, 109px\" \/><\/a>AT&amp;T\u2019s corporate giving arm, the AT&amp;T Foundation, doled out $62 million in 2009 to support a variety of arts and education programs, charities, and organizations according to the article. Jim Cicconi, AT&amp;T\u2019s senior vice president and top lobbyist, chairs the foundation. some of the payments AT&amp;T has made include<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"National Association for the Advancement of Colored People\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NAACP<\/a> received a $1 million contribution from AT&amp;T in 2009 and has received funding in the six figures dating to 2006, according to the group\u2019s annual reports. The NAACP was one of the first groups to announce public support of the T-Mobile acquisition. William Barber, head of the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP, told <em>POLITICO<\/em> that AT&amp;T\u2019s financial support did not influence his group\u2019s decision to write to the <a title=\"Federal Communications Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">FCC<\/a> in support of the merger.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Gay &amp; Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glaad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GLAAD<\/a> which has received $50,000 from AT&amp;T, recently backed the merger deal. Rich Ferraro, a GLAAD official, told <em>POLITICO<\/em><em>, <\/em>\u201cWe do not make policy decisions based on what\u2019s best for our corporate sponsors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Columbia Urban League\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230518124532\/https:\/\/www.columbiaurbanleague.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbia Urban League<\/a> received a $25,000 grant from the AT&amp;T Foundation in 2009 to offer \u201cunderserved populations with resources to help their children achieve academic success,\u201d according to the foundation\u2019s <a title=\"IRS tax forms\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IRS_tax_forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">IRS Form 990<\/a>.
