The research suggests that workers are less motivated and perform worse when subjected to terms that limit their job mobility.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/typesofengineeringdegrees.org\/best-engineering-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-107480 alignright\" title=\"Job search\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/binoculars-e1570294515753-150x76.jpg?resize=138%2C70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Job search\" width=\"138\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/binoculars-e1570294515753.jpg?resize=150%2C76&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/binoculars-e1570294515753.jpg?resize=75%2C38&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/binoculars-e1570294515753.jpg?w=531&amp;ssl=1 531w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a>The study paid online participants to search matrices for numbers that add up to ten. The article explains that a sub-group of people subjected to a mock non-compete clause, <strong>61 percent decided to drop out<\/strong> and forgo the money compared to 41 percent in a control group. The non-compete group also <strong>performed much worse<\/strong> at the task, making mistakes at twice the rate as the others. According to the authors of the study:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We believe that limits on future employment not only dim workers\u2019 external prospects but also decrease their perceived ownership of their jobs, sapping their desire to exert themselves and develop their skills. The resulting drop in performance may be more damaging to companies than the actual loss of the employees would be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/article\/got-a-new-job-better-check-that-non-compete-clause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"subject to non-complete clauses.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2001\/03\/327_0.jpg?resize=115%2C98&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"subject to non-complete clauses.\" width=\"115\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a>Mr. Roberts concludes that the findings could carry <strong>big implications<\/strong> for the American workforce, where more than half of engineers and 70 percent of executives are reportedly subject to non-compete clauses.<\/p>\n<p>The study authors also say that existing research shows higher levels of innovation and productivity in regions that outlaw limits on worker mobility.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Silicon Valley\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.37,-122.04&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=37.37,-122.04 (Silicon%20Valley)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Silicon Valley<\/a> and <a title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.0,-120.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=37.0,-120.0 (California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">California<\/a> stand out in this area.
