Unless you are a techno-geek, these six organizations that control how the Internet works, most likely <strong>fly under your radar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>International Telecommunications Union<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106622\" title=\"United Nations International Telecommunications Union\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/itu_logo-3.jpeg?resize=62%2C70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"United Nations International Telecommunications Union\" width=\"62\" height=\"70\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/itu_logo-3.jpeg?resize=66%2C75&amp;ssl=1 66w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/itu_logo-3.jpeg?resize=132%2C150&amp;ssl=1 132w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/itu_logo-3.jpeg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 62px) 100vw, 62px\" \/><\/a>The first organization that is actively trying to take over the functions of the Internet is the <strong>United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU). <\/strong>The ITU\u00a0in my and many other opinions an <a title=\"The ITU\u2019s Quest for Relevance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalpolicydigest.org\/2013\/05\/22\/the-itus-quest-for-relevance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outdated<\/a>, pointless throw-back to the days of the telegraph, with policies to match. I covered the last <strong>power grabs<\/strong> by the UN&#8217;s ITU <a title=\"ITU Regs Bad for Cybersecurity\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-57y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Internet Architecture Board<\/h3>\n<p>Next is the Internet Architecture Board (AIB). The IAB is the overseer of the technical evolution of the Internet. The IAB supervises the Internet Engineering Task Force (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161120154802\/http:\/\/searchsoa.techtarget.com:80\/definition\/IETF\">IETF<\/a>), which oversees the evolution of <a href=\"http:\/\/searchnetworking.techtarget.com\/definition\/TCP-IP\">TCP\/IP<\/a>, and the <strong>Internet Research Task Force<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160809050704\/http:\/\/searchsoa.techtarget.com\/definition\/Internet-Research-Task-Force\">IRTF<\/a>), which works on network technology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106624 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Internet Architecture Board\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iab_logo.png?resize=75%2C56&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet Architecture Board\" width=\"75\" height=\"56\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iab_logo.png?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/iab_logo.png?w=150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>The IAB declared a major strategic move for the Internet. The <strong>Internet Architecture Board<\/strong> is calling for <strong>global encryption<\/strong> on the web (<em>which I have <a title=\"Social Media Sites Implement SSL \" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-13w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">covered<\/a> <a title=\"HTTPS Everywhere Updated\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many<\/a> <a title=\"UMich Helps Secure the Web\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-jbR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">times <\/a>from my <a title=\"2014\u2019s Major Web Vulnerabilities \u2013 Heartbleed, Shellshock and POODLE\" href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a><\/em>) to become the norm across the Internet in a move to lock down the privacy and security of information exchange according to <a title=\" 11\/19\/2014 04:50 PM Kelly Jackson Higgins Kelly Jackson Higgins News Connect Directly Google+ Twitter RSS E-Mail 10 comments Comment Now Login 50% 50% Tweet Internet Architecture Board Calls For Net Encryption By Default\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150802190604\/http:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/vulnerabilities---threats\/internet-architecture-board-calls-for-net-encryption-by-default\/d\/d-id\/1317614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Dark Reading<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Internet Engineering Task Force<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ietf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106629\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" title=\"Internet Engineering Task Force\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ietfl_logo.gif?resize=100%2C53&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet Engineering Task Force\" width=\"100\" height=\"53\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ietfl_logo.gif?resize=75%2C40&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/ietfl_logo.gif?resize=150%2C80&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <b>Internet Engineering Task Force<\/b> (<a title=\"IETF\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ietf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>IETF<\/b><\/a>) develops and promotes voluntary <strong><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Internet standard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_standard\">Internet standards<\/a>. <\/strong>It is most well known for the\u00a0standards that make up the <a title=\"Internet protocol suite\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_protocol_suite\">Internet protocol suite<\/a> (<strong>TCP\/IP<\/strong>). It is an open <a title=\"Standards organization\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standards_organization\">standards organization<\/a>, with no formal membership or membership requirements. All participants and managers are volunteers, though their work is usually funded by their employers or sponsors. The IETF is also well-known for its <strong><a title=\"RFC's\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ietf.org\/rfc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RFCs<\/a><\/strong> or Request for Comment documents like RFC <a class=\"external mw-magiclink-rfc\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210505195650\/https:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc1918\" rel=\"nofollow\">RFC 1918<\/a> and <a title=\"RFC 873\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160331022935\/http:\/\/rfc873.openrfc.org:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RFC 873<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Internet Society<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106632\" title=\"Internet Society\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/isoc_logo-3.gif?resize=100%2C40&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet Society\" width=\"100\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/isoc_logo-3.gif?resize=75%2C30&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/isoc_logo-3.gif?resize=150%2C60&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Another organization that shapes the Intertubes is ISOC. The <a title=\"Internet Society\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet Society<\/a> (which I am a member of) was formed in 1992 by <a title=\"Vint Cerf\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vint_Cerf\">Vint Cerf<\/a> and <a title=\"Bob Kahn\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Kahn\">Bob Kahn<\/a>. ISOC was formed to provide a corporate structure to support the Internet standards development process.<\/p>\n<h3>Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and <\/strong><strong>Numbers<\/strong> (ICANN) is perhaps the most critical organization that helps run the Internet. ICANN coordinates the distribution of IP addresses and the Internet&#8217;s Domain Name System (DNS). <strong>IP addresses<\/strong> are the numbers that are assigned to every computer on the Net to uniquely identify each device. There are two types of IP addresses, <strong>IPv4 and IPv6<\/strong>. The web has run out of IPv4 addresses (<em>which I covered <a title=\"IPv4 Addresses Drying Up In China\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-4h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> <a title=\"U.S. Running Out Of IP Addresses\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-Zr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and<\/a> <a title=\"The IPocalypse is Nigh\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-1l4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/em>) and is very slowly being replaced with IPv6 addresses. ICANN doles out these addresses.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106634 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/icann_logo.png?resize=75%2C60&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers\" width=\"75\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/icann_logo.png?resize=75%2C60&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/icann_logo.png?resize=150%2C120&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/icann_logo.png?w=160&amp;ssl=1 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/>ICANN also manages the <strong>Domain Naming System<\/strong> (<a title=\"How Domain Name Servers Work\" href=\"http:\/\/computer.howstuffworks.com\/dns.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DNS<\/a>) on the web that converts IP addresses to names. DNS makes it possible to remember www.google.com, which is easy for humans to remember instead of remembering https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150507211330\/http:\/\/74.125.224.72\/, which is easy for computers to deal with, to get to Google.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government funds ICANN. They Feds have gotten heat from around the globe after <a title=\"Eric Snowden\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Edward-Snowden\/463156727109055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Snowden&#8217;s<\/a><a title=\"The 10 Biggest Revelations From Edward Snowden&#039;s Leaks\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210506020455\/https:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/06\/05\/edward-snowden-revelations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> revaluations<\/a> about global spying operations. ISP&#8217;s control nearly everyone accesses it. The gatekeepers to the web are <a title=\"AT&amp;T May Face FCC Fine Over Data Slowdowns for Users \" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2015-01-08\/at-t-says-fcc-considering-fine-over-throttling-disclosure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ATT<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : T\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>), <a title=\"Comcast\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xfinity.com\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comcast<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : CMCSA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CMCSA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CMCSA)<\/a>, <a title=\"Charter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charter<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | CHTR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CHTR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CHTR<\/a>) and <a title=\"Time Warner Cable\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160714182432\/http:\/\/www.timewarnercable.com\/en\/residential-home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Time Warner Cable<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE | TWC\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/05\/18\/media\/time-warner-cable-charter\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TWC<\/a>) are the biggest names of ISP&#8217;s. ISP&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"Despite Endless Improvement Promises, Comcast, Time Warner Cable Still Least Liked Companies -- In Any Industry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/blog\/netneutrality\/articles\/20141230\/08541829549\/despite-endless-improvement-promises-comcast-time-warner-cable-still-least-liked-companies-any-industry.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perform<\/a>&#8221; two key functions. First, they provide last-mile connections, that is the connection to your home or business to their offices, which <a title=\"The Cable Industry's Latest Lame Argument: We're Burying Sneaky Fees In Your Bill As Part Of An Effort To Be More Transparent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20150108\/08074429630\/cable-industrys-latest-lame-argument-were-burying-sneaky-fees-your-bill-as-part-effort-to-be-more-transparent.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we all over-pay for<\/a>. Next, they provide back-haul or backbone services that move your email across the town or across the globe. The ISP&#8217;s also make money on these ISP-ISP connections.<\/p>\n<p>Right now the <a title=\"US Federal Communications Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FCC<\/a> is considering the future of the Internet during its <a title=\"FCC Boss Now Making The Case For Reclassification, Rather Than Against It\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/blog\/netneutrality\/articles\/20150108\/06245629628\/fcc-boss-now-making-case-reclassification-rather-than-against-it.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Net Neutrality decisions<\/a>.
