LTO was developed by <a title=\"HP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hewlett-Packard<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : HPQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:HPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPQ<\/a>), <a title=\"IBM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Business Machines<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : IBM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:IBM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a>), and <a title=\"Certance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Certance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Certance<\/a>. (<a title=\"Quantum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.quantum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quantum<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | QTM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-QMCO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QMCO<\/a>) acquired Centance in 2004). The term &#8220;open-format&#8221; means that users have access to multiple sources of storage media products that will be compatible and save tape backups from being replaced.<\/p>\n<h3>LTO Tape Backups<\/h3>\n<p><em>SearchStorage<\/em> reports that the LTO tape vendors plan to grow the technology to super-size. LTO-9 will offer up to 25 TB of native capacity and LTO-10 will offer 48 TB. Transfer rates will increase over earlier generations. The new LTO will include read-and-write backwards compatibility with tapes from the previous generation. It also has read compatibility from the previous two generations. This allows the Japanese firm&#8217;s forthcoming cassettes will be able to store 74 times more data than conventional tape media or the equivalent of 3,700 Blu-ray discs.<\/p>\n<p>The creation of a 185TB cassette will no doubt be welcomed by large enterprises as they try not to be overwhelmed by the explosion in big data. Various studies estimate that in the next decade the amount of data stored will increase by 50 times. <a title=\"IDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDC<\/a> <a title=\"Busting the Data Explosion Myth\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160509201658\/http:\/\/www.ironmountain.com:80\/Knowledge-Center\/Reference-Library\/View-by-Document-Type\/General-Articles\/B\/Busting-the-Data-Explosion-Myth.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">predicts<\/a> in 2020, over 40 trillion gigabytes of data will be stored around the globe.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Not so fast, these developments are not the holy grail of backup&#8217;s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180416124923\/http:\/\/eduscapes.com:80\/history\/modern\/1600.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106985 size-medium\" title=\"Library\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/looms-e1569977601867-138x150.jpg?resize=138%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Library\" width=\"138\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/looms-e1569977601867.jpg?resize=138%2C150&amp;ssl=1 138w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/looms-e1569977601867.jpg?resize=69%2C75&amp;ssl=1 69w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/looms-e1569977601867.jpg?w=266&amp;ssl=1 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a>I know of several organizations that have dragged their fiscal feet and are still running LTO-1 or LTO-2.\u00a0 They have limited their own upgrade path.
