\"Patent<\/a>The Business Insider<\/em><\/a> has new data about the value of the patent wars. BI cites<\/a> Florian Mueller<\/a>, the founder of the FOSS Patents<\/a> blog. He says patent<\/a> litigation is a waste of resources<\/strong>. His research<\/a> found that the patent wars cost companies millions of dollars in time and lawyer fees. Mr. Mueller analyzed 222 Android<\/a> smartphone patent assertions. He found that 90% of those cases have gone absolutely nowhere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Patent<\/a>According to BI Intelligence,<\/em> Mr. Mueller’s data says that 49% of the assertions have failed thus far. Another 42% of assertions were dropped without a comprehensive settlement<\/strong> or a \u201ccomparably negative fate.\u201d It turns out that only 9% of the patent assertions were able to establish liability. Even in that small sample, only 50% of those cases resulted in \u201clasting injunctive relief.\u201d Mr. Mueller says that number would be even smaller if \u201cthe patents underlying Nokia\u2019s German injunctions against HTC<\/a> (2498)<\/a> had come to judgment in the Federal Patent Court<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, based on patent cases brought to court by Apple<\/a> (AAPL<\/a>), Google<\/a> (GOOG<\/a>), Samsung<\/a> (005930<\/a>), Microsoft<\/a> (MSFT<\/a>), Nokia<\/a> (NOK<\/a>), Motorola<\/a> (MSI<\/a>), and a host of others, litigation is, more often than not, a serious\u00a0waste of time and money for all parties involved.<\/p>\n

\u00a0rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in 2012 Boston University<\/a> estimated<\/a> that patent shenanigans have cost the US economy $29 Billion annually, now there is evidence it is a total waste of time and money and only funds the lawyers.<\/em><\/p>\n
