{"id":72995,"date":"2014-10-09T21:34:09","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T01:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbach.net\/blog\/index.php\/"},"modified":"2021-09-03T10:24:38","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T14:24:38","slug":"comcast-to-unplug-motown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/comcast-to-unplug-motown\/","title":{"rendered":"Comcast to Unplug Motown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-101230\" title=\"Comcast to Unplug Motown\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Detroit-6.jpg?resize=146%2C110&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Comcast to Unplug Motown\" width=\"146\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Detroit-6.jpg?resize=150%2C113&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Detroit-6.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Detroit-6.jpg?w=320&amp;ssl=1 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><strong><a title=\"Comcast\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xfinity.com\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comcast<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : CMCSA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CMCSA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CMCSA)<\/a> will abandon Detroit. <\/strong>The mega-cableco will abandon Detroit if the <a title=\"Federal Communications Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Federal Communications Commission<\/a> approves its acquisition of <a title=\"Time Warner Cable\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170428222318\/http:\/\/www.timewarnercable.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Time Warner Cable Inc.<\/a> The cable giant filed a <a title=\"Comcast \" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171203102103\/http:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/images\/2014-09-23-REDACTED-Comcast-TWC-Opposition-and-Response.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">response<\/a> (PDF) to parties objecting to the nation&#8217;s second-largest provider&#8217;s plan to acquire TWC arguing against claims that it would grow too big under the merger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xfinity.com\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101232\" title=\"Comcast logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/comcast-logo.png?resize=101%2C57&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Comcast logo\" width=\"101\" height=\"57\" \/><\/a>Under its purchase plan, Comcast will withdraw from some markets. It will continue to operate, as it does now, in 16 of 20 top markets. Comcast will operate in a different set of 16 markets, mostly on both coasts. <strong>Comcast lawyers<\/strong> stated, &#8220;<em>Comcast will no longer have a presence in the Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, or Cleveland DMAs (designated market areas).<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLive<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/detroit\/index.ssf\/2014\/10\/comcast_would_no_longer_serve.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a> that companies like Dish Network, Netflix, and various TV networks have complained that the Comcast-Time-Warner merger. They argue that the new cableco would create a <strong>massive cable company with an anti-competitive<\/strong> advantage. Religious television programmer <em>My Christian TV<\/em> complained that the deal. They claimed it would make Comcast, \u201c<em>the only significant <strong>cable outlet in about 98 percent of all African-American communities<\/strong> in the country<\/em>.&#8221; Comcast&#8217;s response:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Comcast has never served<\/strong> several markets with <strong>significant African-American<\/strong> <strong>populations<\/strong> such as St. Louis, Cleveland, and New Orleans, among many others, and after the Transaction, will no longer serve Detroit&#8230; Comcast estimates that after the transaction, it will serve markets that include approximately 78 percent of the country\u2019s Hispanic households (not counting Puerto Rico in the denominator), though of course many of those households will not be Comcast customers.<\/p>\n<h3>GreatLand Connections Inc.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vividtimes.com\/bsnls-internet-capacity-down-due-to-cuts-in-undersea-cable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101235 \" title=\"Cutting the cable\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cable-cut.jpg?resize=119%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cutting the cable\" width=\"119\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cable-cut.jpg?resize=150%2C113&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cable-cut.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cable-cut.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-10-01\/comcast-to-follow-1-million-who-ve-fled-bankrupt-detroit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the castaways in <a title=\"Detroit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3007840\/creative-conversations\/how-young-community-entrepreneurs-rebuilding-detroit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit<\/a>, <a title=\"Minneapolis\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170225100445\/http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/minneapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minneapolis<\/a>, and elsewhere would belong to a new company. The new company would be called <strong>GreatLand Connections Inc. <\/strong>It would be created in what the companies call a tax-efficient spinoff. The new company\u2019s <strong>debt would exceed industry averages<\/strong> &#8212; something that has raised concerns about service in those communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We don\u2019t have the answers we need<\/em>,\u201d said <a title=\"Open Web Site\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160722001355\/http:\/\/www.meridian.mi.us\/index.asp?Type=B_DIR&amp;SEC={886E8659-F951-4EA9-A8DC-553BF0F9378D}&amp;DE={4C07996D-8219-4F5E-BED9-0CA6329CDDE5}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Ron Styka<\/a>, an elected trustee with responsibility for cable-service oversight in Meridian Township, <a title=\"Michigan\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170219134634\/http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan<\/a>, a town served by Comcast about 80 miles west of Detroit. Municipal officials told <em>Bloomberg<\/em> they have questions about service. The questions include whether subscribers can keep Comcast e-mail addresses or if the cable-channel lineups may change.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101237\" title=\"Charter Cable logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/charter_logo.jpg?resize=124%2C78&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Charter Cable logo\" width=\"124\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/charter_logo.jpg?resize=150%2C94&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/charter_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C47&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/charter_logo.jpg?w=183&amp;ssl=1 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/>GreatLand will start with $7.8 billion in debt, according to a <a title=\"Open Web Site\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107225913\/http:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/images\/Form-S-4A-August-25-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">securities filing<\/a>. <em>Bloomberg<\/em> says that debt is equal to five times EBITDA, or <a title=\"EBITDA\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171120155212\/http:\/\/www.wikinvest.com:80\/metric\/EBITDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikinvest noreferrer\">earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization<\/a>. The debt ratio for Comcast is 1.99 times EBITDA and for <a title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.6641666667,-73.9386111111&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.6641666667,-73.9386111111 (New%20York%20City)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">New York-based<\/a> Time Warner Cable it\u2019s 3.07 times EBITDA, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. David Osberg, city administrator of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.8177777778,-93.1669444444&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=44.8177777778,-93.1669444444 (Eagan%2C%20Minnesota)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener noreferrer\">Eagan, MN<\/a> told Bloomberg.\u00a0 &#8220;It\u2019s not clear whether GreatLand will be financially qualified,&#8221; to provide services.<\/p>\n<p>The new company will <strong>buy management services from <\/strong><a class=\"web_ticker\" title=\"Charter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/CHTR:US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Charter Communications<\/strong> Inc. (CHTR)<\/a> according to <em>Bloomberg<\/em>. Charter, which had sought to buy Time Warner Cable, would own a 33 percent interest in GreatLand and become the second-largest U.S. cable company with more than 8 million customers counting GreatLand\u2019s and subscribers it gets in purchases and swaps with Comcast after the merger is completed.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I worked a couple of jobs last year with Comcast and it always took them 3 or 4 months to provide service to business customers so many <a title=\"Detroit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitmi.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Detroiters<\/a> may not be sad to see the cable giant go. The Philadelphia company last week acknowledged major customer service woes after a series of viral videos documented the experiences of exasperated customers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Comcast CEO Neil Smit announced the hiring of a new head of customer service, and wrote in a blog post:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It may take a few years before we can honestly say that a great customer experience is something we\u2019re known for.
