G.fast is aimed to help BT deliver ultrafast speeds of <strong>up to 500 Mbps<\/strong> to most of the UK within a decade. The <strong>deployment\u00a0will start in 2016\u20132017<\/strong>, BT says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201112015049\/https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/09\/15\/comment-period-for-internet-fast-lanes-closes-today-fcc-sees-record-submissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"US broadband\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140916030923\/https%3A\/\/gigaom2.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/turtle.jpg?resize=144%2C94&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"US broadband\" width=\"144\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a>The day before, the <strong><a title=\"FCC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FCC<\/a><\/strong> <a title=\"FCC Finds U.S. Broadband Deployment Not Keeping Pace\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/fcc-finds-us-broadband-deployment-not-keeping-pace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that they have re-defined the meaning of <strong><a title=\"Internet in the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia nofollow noopener noreferrer\">broadband in the United States<\/a><\/strong>. Under the new definition, US broadband has changed from a measly 4 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up to an anemic <strong>25 Mbps down and\u00a03 Mbps up<\/strong>. There will be little impact for the end-user because this is just <strong>gooberment posturing<\/strong>. This will put the US in some low rank internationally. While the UK global telecom giant BT sets its sites on 500 Mbps.\u00a0The FCC\u2019s presser states that the <strong>ruling is meaningless<\/strong>. Their own document says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026 its 25\/3 benchmark as a standard to measure the progress of broadband deployment. However, the benchmark is <strong>not a minimum speed requirement<\/strong>\u00a0and does not prevent broadband service providers from <strong>advertising or describing slower service as broadband.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.24studio.co.uk\/2013_01_01_archive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106570\" title=\"Republicans blasted the new definition of broadband\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?resize=69%2C80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Republicans blasted the new definition of broadband\" width=\"69\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?resize=129%2C150&amp;ssl=1 129w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?resize=64%2C75&amp;ssl=1 64w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?resize=768%2C895&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?resize=878%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 878w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?w=1104&amp;ssl=1 1104w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/money_bucket.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 69px) 100vw, 69px\" \/><\/a>Not surprisingly, <span id=\"intelliTXT\">100% of <strong>US <a title=\"Internet service provider\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_service_provider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ISP&#8217;s<\/a> are against<\/strong> this redefinition of broadband<\/span> the cable lobby is opposed to the FCC&#8217;s plan. <em><a title=\"Ars Technica\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ars Technica<\/a> <\/em><a title=\"No need for speed: Cable industry opposes 25Mbps broadband definition\" href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/business\/2015\/01\/no-need-for-speed-cable-industry-opposes-25mbps-broadband-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the Telecommunications Association (NCTA) wrote\u00a0in an FCC filing Thursday (PDF) that, <strong>&#8220;Customers do just fine with lower speeds<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the CableCo lobby&#8217;s opposition, <em><a title=\"PCWorld\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PCWorld<\/a><\/em> <a title=\"FCC redefines advanced broadband as 25 Mbps; Republicans blow a gasket\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/2877712\/fcc-redefines-advanced-broadband-as-25-mbps-republicans-blow-a-gasket.html%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports <\/a>that <strong>Republicans blasted the FCC<\/strong> report and new definition of broadband.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"The Register\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Register<\/a> <a title=\"FCC sexes up, er, sextuples 'broadband' speed to 25Mbps in US\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2015\/01\/29\/fcc_sextuples_broadband_speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> how little things have changed. Haters are\u00a0going\u00a0to\u00a0hate. In 2008, Commissioner Robert McDowell opposed increasing the speed definition of broadband from 200Kbps to 768Kbps. McDowell today represents Washington DC law firm <a title=\"Wiley Rein\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wileyrein.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Wiley Rein<\/a> and appeared last week in <a title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889%20%28United%20States%20Congress%29&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Congress<\/a> arguing that the FCC should not introduce net neutrality rules.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Do you want Comcast in charge of the web?
