Most Americans (87%) have heard about the <a title=\"National Security Agency\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">National Security Agency&#8217;s<\/a> (NSA) surveillance programs since <strong>Snowden<\/strong> began leaking documents nearly two years ago. The <strong>Pew research<\/strong> found that nearly one-third of American adults have taken steps to <strong>protect their information from government surveillance<\/strong> programs that monitor phone and digital communications.<\/p>\n<h3>Aware of the NSA&#8217;s surveillance programs<\/h3>\n<p>Out of those surveyed who are at least somewhat aware of the NSA&#8217;s surveillance programs (30% of adults),<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>34% have taken at least one step to keep their information hidden or shielded from the government.<\/li>\n<li>25% are using more complex passwords<\/li>\n<li>17% changed their privacy settings on social media<\/li>\n<li>15% use social media less often<\/li>\n<li>15% have avoided certain apps<\/li>\n<li>14% say they speak more in person instead of communicating online or on the phone<\/li>\n<li>13% have uninstalled apps<\/li>\n<li>13% have avoided using certain terms in online communications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210419182652\/https:\/\/www.networkwebcams.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/12\/05\/what-local-councils-can-teach-us-about-ip-camera-procurement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-106441 size-medium\" title=\"government surveillance programs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/secure_cam-1.png?resize=83%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"government surveillance programs\" width=\"83\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/secure_cam-1.png?resize=83%2C150&amp;ssl=1 83w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/secure_cam-1.png?resize=42%2C75&amp;ssl=1 42w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/secure_cam-1.png?w=139&amp;ssl=1 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 83px) 100vw, 83px\" \/><\/a>When it comes to how\u00a0well the <strong>courts<\/strong> are balancing the needs of law enforcement and intelligence agencies with citizens\u2019 right to privacy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>49% say courts and judges are not balancing those interests;<\/li>\n<li>48% say they are.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>OK to spy on foreigners<\/h3>\n<p>The article says the public approves of monitoring plenty of people, including foreign citizens, foreign leaders, and American leaders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>82% say it&#8217;s acceptable to monitor communications of suspected terrorists;<\/li>\n<li>60% believe it&#8217;s acceptable to monitor the communications of American leaders;<\/li>\n<li>60% think it&#8217;s OK to monitor the communications of foreign leaders;<\/li>\n<li>54% say it&#8217;s acceptable to monitor communications from foreign citizens;<\/li>\n<li>57% say that the monitoring of citizens&#8217; communications is unacceptable;<\/li>\n<li>65% &#8211; think it&#8217;s OK to monitor people who pepper their communications with words such as &#8220;explosives&#8221; and &#8220;automatic weapons&#8221; in search engine queries;<\/li>\n<li>67% think it&#8217;s OK to monitor people who visit anti-American websites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcluley.com\/2013\/07\/facebook-graphic-app-privacy-hoax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Social media privacy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/grahamcluley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/facebook-privacy-lock.jpeg?resize=134%2C98&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Social media privacy\" width=\"134\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a>Americans are split about just how much we should worry about surveillance &#8211;
