Readers of <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a> are familiar with the .net domain since you got here. You are also probably familiar with other web neighborhoods like .com where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> live. The folks in charge of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=intertubes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intertubes<\/a> have added more neighborhoods or technically <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161225111022\/http:\/\/searchsoa.techtarget.com\/definition\/top-level-domain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top Level Domains<\/a> (TLD), and now we have over 1,000 TLDs, many of which have only been around for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecoat.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-97730\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bluecoat-logo.png?resize=150%2C43&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"43\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bluecoat-logo.png?resize=150%2C43&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bluecoat-logo.png?resize=75%2C21&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/bluecoat-logo.png?w=457&amp;ssl=1 457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>This rapid growth raises questions about how well those in charge of these new TLD&#8217;s secure their neighborhood against malware and other threats. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSO Online<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160820100541\/http:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/2992499\/cyber-attacks-espionage\/the-webs-10-most-shady-neighborhoods.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains<\/a> that just like any city, the Web has neighborhoods where dubious activities often take place: <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/definition\/spam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spam<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160616150532\/https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/scams-safety\/fraud\/internet_fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scams<\/a>, the distribution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/4061\/potentially-unwanted-program-pup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potentially unwanted software<\/a> (PUS), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malware<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/definition\/botnet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">botnets<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsecurity.techtarget.com\/definition\/phishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phishing<\/a>, and other suspicious activity.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"description\">Web security and WAN optimization<\/span> firm <a title=\"Blue Coat Systems\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bluecoat.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Blue Coat Systems<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NASDAQ:BCSI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BCSI<\/a>) regularly analyzes hundreds of millions of Web requests from more than 15,000 businesses and 75 million users to track &#8220;shady activity&#8221; on the Web. In September, it released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecoat.com\/documents\/download\/895c5d97-b024-409f-b678-d8faa38646ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Do Not Enter: Blue Coat Research Maps the Web\u2019s Shadiest Neighborhoods<\/em><\/a> (PDF), with a list of the 10 top-level domains (TLDs) on the Web that are home to shady sites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170502001235\/http:\/\/www.komando.com:80\/tips\/11618\/blocking-unwanted-content-on-a-mobile-gadget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97732 \" title=\"Blocking traffic to the riskiest TLDs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoadClosed-e1563063825727-150x140.jpg?resize=133%2C124&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Blocking traffic to the riskiest TLDs\" width=\"133\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoadClosed-e1563063825727.jpg?resize=150%2C140&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoadClosed-e1563063825727.jpg?resize=75%2C70&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/RoadClosed-e1563063825727.jpg?w=586&amp;ssl=1 586w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a>Blue Coat recommends that organizations take steps to protect themselves, including blocking traffic to the riskiest TLDs and cautioning users to be careful clicking on any links that contain these TLDs. It further suggests that users who are unsure of a source hover their mouse over a link to help verify that it leads to the address displayed in the text of the link, or &#8220;press and hold&#8221; links on a mobile device to do the same verification<\/p>\n<p>Blue Coat&#8217;s <a title=\"List of Internet top-level domains\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sidn.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">list of TLDs<\/a> most associated with shady sites is constantly in flux but here is their September list.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.review &#8211;<\/strong> The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review TLD<\/a> is shady mostly due to s<strong>cam sites<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200222003205\/https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/blue-coat-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue Coat\u2019s <\/a>Larsen says. &#8220;Just looking at the list of domain names, I would say all of the top 15 are scam sites,&#8221; he adds, &#8220;.review does not seem to be making any effort whatsoever to keep the bad guys out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171002195418\/http:\/\/www.dheerajkumar.com:80\/what-is-a-top-level-domain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-97724\" title=\"How to read a URL\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/top-level-domain1.jpg?resize=350%2C134&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"How to read a URL\" width=\"350\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/top-level-domain1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/top-level-domain1.jpg?resize=75%2C29&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/top-level-domain1.jpg?resize=150%2C58&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.country &#8211;<\/strong> The security firm says the .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/country.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">country TLD<\/a> appears to have been colonized by scam networks that like to use a game\/survey &#8220;reward&#8221; or &#8220;prize&#8221; as bait. Blue Coat&#8217;s Larsen told CSO there is a strong connection between some of the supporting <strong>ad networks<\/strong> on and known PUS networks (<strong>adware and spyware<\/strong>). Mr. Larson says, &#8220;So if you&#8217;d like to block that entire TLD on your Web gateway, I wouldn&#8217;t blame you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160312010345\/http:\/\/www.famefacts.com:80\/kim-kardashian-measurements-weight-height-bra-size\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97734 \" title=\"Faux-lebrity\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/kim-kardashian-1-e1563063916493-150x129.jpg?resize=98%2C85&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Faux-lebrity\" width=\"98\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/kim-kardashian-1-e1563063916493.jpg?resize=150%2C129&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/kim-kardashian-1-e1563063916493.jpg?resize=75%2C64&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/kim-kardashian-1-e1563063916493.jpg?w=699&amp;ssl=1 699w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>.kim &#8211;<\/strong> The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/kim.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kim TLD<\/a> hosts some legitimate domains, most notably a Korean tech blog and several Turkish sites. According to Blue Coat, the TLD earned its shady online reputation due to the presence of <strong>scam networks<\/strong> linked to <strong>PUS<\/strong>, <strong>malware,<\/strong> and at least one domain that hosts a <strong><a title=\"Domain Generation Algorithm\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domain_Generation_Algorithm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">domain generation algorithm<\/a><\/strong> (DGA) used to pump out domain names that can be used with malware according to the blog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.cricket &#8211; <\/strong>Named for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espncricinfo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">world&#8217;s second-most popular <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espncricinfo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sport<\/a>, the .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/cricket.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cricket TLD <\/a>is another shady neighborhood on the Web. The author notes that while home to some legitimate sites, researcher Larsen points to many instances of <strong>search engine poisoning<\/strong>. For instance, StarWarsMovie.cricket pulls lots of random Star Wars items into one place to get traffic \u2014 including images clearly lifted from other places.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161013101318\/https:\/\/www.famousfourmedia.com\/2015\/05\/it-is-rocket-science\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-97737\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sciencedomain.png?resize=150%2C40&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sciencedomain.png?resize=150%2C40&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sciencedomain.png?resize=75%2C20&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sciencedomain.png?resize=768%2C206&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sciencedomain.png?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>.science<\/strong> &#8211; The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/science.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">science TLD<\/a> may be a victim of its own marketing. In trying to raise the TLD&#8217;s profile, the registry gave away free .science domains and became one of the shadiest TLD\u2019s on the web. Blue Coat\u2019s Larsen described their downfall in the CSO article. &#8220;Generally they tend to run into trouble when they run promotions for bulk registrations for really low prices \u2026 If you can register a domain for a buck, generally there will be bad guys there registering domains.&#8221; He says the .science domains seem to be largely associated with <strong>spam, and scam sites<\/strong>. The shady activity included a sizable network of ebook sites, which led to a download network that&#8217;s been associated with PUS activity in the past.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.work &#8211;<\/strong> The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work TLD<\/a> seems to be more about <strong>spam and scams<\/strong> than malware, though Larsen&#8217;s team did find a few tentative connections to <strong>PUS networks<\/strong>. There were some legitimate sites, though Larsen notes that they might be <strong>worth blocking<\/strong> as well. Examples include a Turkish <strong>porn site.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realwire.com\/releases\/Domain-Venture-Partners-Acquires-the-PARTY-Top-Level-Domain-Registry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97739 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Party domain\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/partydomain-e1563064002175-75x53.jpg?resize=75%2C53&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Party domain\" width=\"75\" height=\"53\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/partydomain-e1563064002175.jpg?resize=75%2C53&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/partydomain-e1563064002175.jpg?resize=150%2C106&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/partydomain-e1563064002175.jpg?w=236&amp;ssl=1 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>party<\/strong> &#8211; Mr, Larson told <em>CSO<\/em> that a number of the sites on the .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/party.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">party TLD<\/a> may seem legitimate. However, he warns, &#8220;There are some yellow flags.&#8221; of search engine poisoning. The TLD also hosts a number of MP3 sites \u2014 probably <strong>piracy<\/strong> or something malicious. There&#8217;s also a site that hosts what appears to be a shady tracker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.gq &#8211; <\/strong>The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/gq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gq TLD<\/a> is the country code for <a title=\"Equatorial Guinea\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=3.75,8.78333333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=3.75,8.78333333333 (Equatorial%20Guinea)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Equatorial Guinea<\/a> which Blue Coat&#8217;s Larson notes is in many ways a lifetime achievement award winner. He says, &#8220;If we look at all of the .gq sites &#8230; nearly 99 percent are shady&#8221;. Most of the abuse of .gq noted by Blue Coat has been in the form of <strong>search engine poisoning<\/strong> and many\u00a0cookie-cutter &#8220;shady video&#8221; sites associated with <strong>PUS.<\/strong> It also features some &#8220;<strong>shocking video<\/strong>&#8221; spam\/scam sites that spread via social media and a smattering of <strong>malware, phishing,<\/strong> and <strong>porn sites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.thefreedictionary.com\/postst52505_cask--keg--and-barrel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-97741 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Barrel full of monkeys\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/barrel-of-monkeys.jpg?resize=75%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Barrel full of monkeys\" width=\"75\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/barrel-of-monkeys.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/barrel-of-monkeys.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/barrel-of-monkeys.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><strong>link &#8211; <\/strong>The .<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/link.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link TLD<\/a> is rife with<strong> porn cont<\/strong><strong>ent<\/strong> delivery networks and piracy sites, neither of which is counted as &#8220;shady&#8221; by Blue Coat. There are apparently a handful of legit sites in .link but beyond these legitimate domains are a host of survey scam sites. &#8220;Historically, it&#8217;s been a place for <strong>spammers<\/strong> to live,&#8221; Larsen says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, there are well-run TLD&#8217;s. The best according to Blue Coat are:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripwire.com\/state-of-security\/security-data-protection\/cyber-security\/most-suspicious-tlds-revealed-by-blue-coat-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-97744 size-full\" title=\"Safe web neighborhoods\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/SafeDomains.png?resize=480%2C270&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Safe web neighborhoods\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/SafeDomains.png?w=538&amp;ssl=1 538w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/SafeDomains.png?resize=75%2C42&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/SafeDomains.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb- <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>These TLD&#8217;s are why companies like BluseCoat,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170127164906\/https:\/\/www.forcepoint.com\/product\/web-filtering\/websense-web-filter-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Websense<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/enterprise-security\/solutions\/web-filtering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenDNS<\/a> are in business. (OK- Websense and OpenDNS are no longer stand-alone companies anymore.
