People who know this stuff say our brains have not changed as much as our surroundings. <strong>Our brains are hardwired to keep us safe<\/strong>. It is called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negativity_bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negativity bias\u201d<\/a> which means we focus on the potential pain more than the potential good. This is why change is scary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdw-inc.com\/wildcatsphotos.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"back career? holding is smilodon your noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Is Smilodon Holding Back Your Career?\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.hdw-inc.com\/sabertoothedcatextinct.jpg?resize=154%2C91\" alt=\"Is Smilodon Holding Back Your Career?\" width=\"154\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a>These <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2012\/10\/evolution-of-anxiety-humans-were-prey-for-predators-such-as-hyenas-snakes-sharks-kangaroos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>legacy fears<\/strong><\/a> are the result of millions of years of our ancestors <strong>being prey,<\/strong> not predators. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pachycrocuta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giant hyenas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/fate-of-the-cave-bear-69538895\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cave bears<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/cave-lion-1093066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cave lions<\/a>, eagles, snakes, other primates, wolves, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190504170517\/https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2017\/10\/saber-toothed-cats-survived-longer-dna-animals-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saber-toothed cats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nimravidae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">false saber-toothed cats<\/a>, and maybe even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/australasia\/killer-kangaroo-was-ultimate-fighting-marsupial-407739.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">giant, predatory kangaroos<\/a> ate early humans.\u00a0But in our knowledge-based world, the potential pain we expect (a tough meeting with the boss) won\u2019t kill us\u2013 but we feel the <a href=\"https:\/\/redcaperevolution.com\/take-a-career-risk-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same fear and pain<\/a> as our primal ancestors did when they heard the saber-toothed cat roar.<\/p>\n<p>And so we run the other way. At work, we miss more potential good because <strong>we\u2019re hard-wired to avoid potential bad.<\/strong> Taking specific, intentional career risks helps us overcome our ancient hard wiring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Percrocutidae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"percrocutidae noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Percrocutidae \" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/01\/Dinocrocuta_gigantea.jpg\/1099px-Dinocrocuta_gigantea.jpg\" alt=\"Percrocutidae \" width=\"141\" height=\"82\" \/><\/a>In fact, avoiding risk is one of the most dangerous things you do for your career long term.
