That computer <strong>uses electricity<\/strong> to let the world know you like the sleepy puppy video or what you dinner looked like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/malinjames.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100196\" title=\"computers produce heat\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legs-laptop.jpg?resize=119%2C81&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"computers produce heat\" width=\"119\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legs-laptop.jpg?resize=150%2C102&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legs-laptop.jpg?resize=75%2C51&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/legs-laptop.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/><\/a>As you may have noticed if you left your laptop on your lap for too long computers also <strong>produce heat<\/strong>. Facebook (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FB<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-TWTR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TWTR<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram, <\/a>and all the other time-wasters have millions of computers generating excess heat that needs to go somewhere. It is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2009\/05\/14\/whos-got-the-most-web-servers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimated<\/a> that Facebook alone has hundreds of thousands of servers.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep servers cool<\/h3>\n<p>One of the ways to keep servers cool is to keep them wet. As <strong>count-intuitive<\/strong> as that seems, there are companies that use <strong>liquid immersion to cool their servers<\/strong> according to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2015\/06\/04\/liquid_cooling_server_heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Registe<\/a>r<\/em>. This approach uses data centers featuring large \u2018baths\u2019 filled with a <strong>dielectric liquid<\/strong> into which racks of equipment are submerged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grcooling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100193 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Green Revolution Cooling CarnotJet\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_grc_logo.png?resize=63%2C75&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Green Revolution Cooling CarnotJet\" width=\"63\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_grc_logo.png?resize=63%2C75&amp;ssl=1 63w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_center_grc_logo.png?w=120&amp;ssl=1 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 63px) 100vw, 63px\" \/><\/a><strong>Mineral oil<\/strong> has been used in immersion cooling before Perhaps the best-known proponent of liquid immersion cooling is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grcooling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Revolution Cooling<\/a>.<\/strong> Its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grcooling.com\/carnotjet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CarnotJet<\/a> system allows rack-mounted servers from any OEM to be dunked in special racked baths filled with a dielectric <a title=\"Mineral oil\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mineral_oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">mineral oil<\/a> blend called <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160603054008\/http:\/\/www.grcooling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ElectroSafe-Coolant-Fact-Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ElectroSafe<\/strong><\/a> (PDF), an electrical insulator it claims to have 1,200 times more heat capacity by volume than air.<\/p>\n<p>Green Revolution Cooling claims cooling energy reductions of up to 95 percent, server <strong>power savings of 10-25%<\/strong>, data center build-out cost reductions of up to 60% through simplified architecture, and improved server performance and reliability as a result of less exposure to dust (and moisture).<br \/>\nMicrosoft has taken this technology to the next level. Now, <strong>Microsoft<\/strong> is experimenting with locating e<strong>ntire data centers underwater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Microsoft underwater data center<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100190\" title=\"Microsoft logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSFT_logo-2.jpg?resize=60%2C62&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Microsoft logo\" width=\"60\" height=\"62\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSFT_logo-2.jpg?resize=73%2C75&amp;ssl=1 73w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSFT_logo-2.jpg?resize=145%2C150&amp;ssl=1 145w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSFT_logo-2.jpg?w=176&amp;ssl=1 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 60px) 100vw, 60px\" \/><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160718172247\/http:\/\/www.computerworld.com:80\/article\/3028048\/data-center\/microsoft-tests-underwater-data-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ComputerWorld<\/a><\/em> is reporting that Microsoft has designed, built, and deployed its own <strong>sub-sea data center in the ocean<\/strong>, in the period of about a year. The <a title=\"Redmond, Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=47.6694444444,-122.123888889&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=47.6694444444,-122.123888889 (Redmond%2C%20Washington)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Redmond, WA<\/a> firm started working on the project in late 2014. Microsoft employee, Sean James, who served on a U.S. Navy submarine, submitted a paper on the concept.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-foot diameter steel prototype vessel, named after the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halowaypoint.com\/en-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Halo<\/a><\/em> character Leona Philpot, operated 30 feet underwater on the Pacific Ocean seafloor, about 1 kilometer off the California coast near <a title=\"San Luis Obispo, California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.2741666667,-120.663055556&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=35.2741666667,-120.663055556 (San%20Luis%20Obispo%2C%20California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation nofollow noopener noreferrer\">San Luis Obispo<\/a> for 105 days from August to November 2015, according to Microsoft. Microsoft engineers remotely controlled the data center and even ran commercial data-processing projects from Microsoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/?cdn=disable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure cloud computing<\/a> service in the submerged data center.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100189\" title=\"Project Natick\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/diving_suit-1.jpg?resize=80%2C114&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Project Natick\" width=\"80\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/diving_suit-1.jpg?resize=105%2C150&amp;ssl=1 105w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/diving_suit-1.jpg?resize=52%2C75&amp;ssl=1 52w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/diving_suit-1.jpg?w=375&amp;ssl=1 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L2oJw1a_qEM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sub-sea data center<\/a> experiment, called <a href=\"http:\/\/natick.research.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Natic<\/a>k after a town in MA, is in the research stage and Microsoft warns it is &#8220;still early days&#8221; to evaluate whether the concept could be adopted by the company and other cloud service providers. Microsoft says,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><em>Project Natick reflects Microsoft\u2019s ongoing quest for cloud data center solutions that offer rapid provisioning, lower costs, high responsiveness, and are more environmentally sustainable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft believes that using undersea data centers can serve the <strong>50% of people<\/strong> who live within 200 kilometers of the ocean. They say that deployment in deep-water offers &#8220;ready access to cooling, renewable power sources, and a controlled environment.&#8221; Moreover, a data center can be deployed from start to finish in 90 days.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is weighing coupling the data center with a turbine or a tidal energy system to generate electricity, according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220616150323\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/01\/technology\/microsoft-plumbs-oceans-depths-to-test-underwater-data-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Environmental impact<\/h3>\n<p>A new trial is expected to begin next year, possibly near Florida or in Northern Europe, Microsoft engineers told the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220616150323\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/01\/technology\/microsoft-plumbs-oceans-depths-to-test-underwater-data-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>NYT<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100200 size-thumbnail\" title=\"environmental impact\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/green-earth-1.gif?resize=75%2C72&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"environmental impact\" width=\"75\" height=\"72\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/green-earth-1.gif?resize=75%2C72&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/green-earth-1.gif?resize=150%2C143&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/>Some users questioned whether an undersea data center could have an environmental impact, including the heating up of the water around the data center. But Microsoft claimed on its website that the project envisages the use of data centers that would be totally recycled and would also have zero emissions when located along with offshore renewable energy sources. MSFT told <em>Computerworld<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><em>No waste products, whether due to the power generation, computers, or human maintainers are emitted into the environment &#8230; During our deployment of the Leona Philpot vessel, sea life in the local vicinity quickly adapted to the presence of the vessel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have covered some other alternative ways to deal with data centers on <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-Pv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HP&#8217;s plans to use cow manure to generate electricity <\/a>and Microsoft&#8217;s plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-5EB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use sewer gas<\/a> to power a data center in Wyoming.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Underwater data centers are an attractive idea, there are challenges. One is a concern is the saltwater could corrode the structures. This issue can be resolved by locating the data centers in the freshwater <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190416225724\/https:\/\/www.michigan.org\/michigan-s-great-lakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Great Lakes<\/a>.
