On Oct. 6, 1991, Torvalds began arguing with volunteer developers who would go on to make Linux an <strong><a title=\"Open-source software\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open-source_software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">open-source<\/a><\/strong> powerhouse and eventually a household name. Today the Linux community is upwards of 86 million users strong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fico.com\/en\/blogs\/risk-compliance\/happy-birthday-fico-score\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104870\" title=\"Linux Turns 25\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/25th-birthday.jpg?resize=108%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Linux Turns 25\" width=\"108\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/25th-birthday.jpg?resize=150%2C139&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/25th-birthday.jpg?resize=75%2C70&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/25th-birthday.jpg?w=719&amp;ssl=1 719w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 108px) 100vw, 108px\" \/><\/a>As part of celebrations to mark Linux&#8217;s 25th birthday the Linux Foundation has published its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/go.linuxfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Linux Kernel Development Report<\/i><\/a><i> (PDF reg required)<\/i>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2016\/08\/26\/linux_at_25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>the Register<\/em><\/a>, the report concludes that <strong>Linux is in great shape<\/strong>, \u201cThere may be no other examples of such a large, common resource being supported by such a large group of <strong>independent actors<\/strong> in such a collaborative way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The independent actors have a lot to collaborate on. The report notes that the first versions of the Linux kernel comprised about 10,000 lines of code. Now it&#8217;s nearing 22 million and <strong>growing at a rate of 4,600 lines a day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/wall-street-data-held-factom-blockchain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104873 size-medium\" title=\"Wall Street\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wall_street.jpg?resize=150%2C82&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Wall Street\" width=\"150\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wall_street.jpg?resize=150%2C82&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wall_street.jpg?resize=75%2C41&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/wall_street.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>While Linux may have started out as a <a title=\"Hobbyist operating system development\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobbyist_operating_system_development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">hobby OS<\/a>, that changed in the <strong>early 2000s<\/strong>. At the turn of the century, Wall Street banks demanded <strong>Linux support for their enterprise application servers<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190125143212\/https:\/\/www.technewsworld.com\/story\/83838.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.technewsworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tech News World<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was a moment that broke down resistance to Linux in the big IT vendors like <a class=\"story-keyword-offsite\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bea.com\">BEA<\/a>, IBM, and <a title=\"Oracle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oracle<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : ORCL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-ORCL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ORCL<\/a>). That hole in the dam was the start of a flood,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudfoundry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cloud Foundry<\/a> CEO <a title=\"Sam Ramji\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/sramji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener twitter noreferrer\">Sam Ramji<\/a>. &#8220;<em>Today Linux is the home of operating system innovation.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/frugalpropellerhead.blogspot.com\/2013\/11\/what-should-i-buy-my-kid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104875\" title=\"Linux user and open source advocate\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tux_propeller.png?resize=100%2C102&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Linux user and open source advocate\" width=\"100\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tux_propeller.png?resize=147%2C150&amp;ssl=1 147w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tux_propeller.png?resize=73%2C75&amp;ssl=1 73w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/tux_propeller.png?w=313&amp;ssl=1 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/aporeto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aporeto<\/a> Virtualization Expert Stefano Stabellini, who has been a Linux user and open source advocate since the 1990s explained the transition. &#8220;<em>&#8230; back when I started with Linux in the &#8217;90s &#8230; [companies] did not understand it. They thought that open source was unsustainable, and Linux was niche and hobbyist.<\/em>&#8221; He says that now everything has changed. Every company has an open source strategy now. &#8220;<em><a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?cid=358464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) was the biggest foe and now is a strong ally. Linux is the most widely adopted operating system of all times.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/insights.dice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Dice<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/insights.dice.com\/2016\/09\/01\/linux-turns-25-years-old\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> that the most active contributors to the growth of Linux have included (in descending order) <a title=\"Intel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : INTC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-INTC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">INTC<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Hat<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linaro.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linaro<\/a>, <a title=\"Samsung Electronics Co.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samsung<\/a> (<a title=\"KS : 005930\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/005930:KS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">005930<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SUSE<\/a>, <a title=\"IBM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : IBM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-IBM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a>), and various corporate consultants. <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>), <a title=\"AMD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AMD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMD<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE: AMD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNGS:AMD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMD)<\/a>, and <a title=\"Texas Instruments\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas_Instruments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas Instruments<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : TXN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNGS:TXN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TXN<\/a>) also ranked in the top 15.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>So my first pass at Linux was Red Hat Linux 5.0. when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Novell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Novell<\/a> bought into Linux.
