Unified security management vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.att.com\/blogs\/security-essentials\/att-cybersecurity-is-born\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">AlienVault<\/a> noted the IT Pro stress in an article at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Infosecurity Magazine<\/em><\/a>. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com\/news\/stressed-out-it-pros-too-busy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> that industry <strong>skills shortages<\/strong> will have a major impact on <a title=\"Information technology\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">IT professional&#8217;s<\/a> time off (paid or unpaid) this holiday season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.att.com\/blogs\/security-essentials\/att-cybersecurity-is-born\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-96951\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?resize=105%2C67&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"105\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?resize=1024%2C651&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?resize=75%2C48&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?resize=150%2C95&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?resize=768%2C488&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?w=1436&amp;ssl=1 1436w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AlienVault-logo.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 105px) 100vw, 105px\" \/><\/a>The AlienVault study polled over 400 IT pros to better understand their workplace stresses. They found that <strong>half<\/strong> of those that can afford to take time off this festive period will spend it <strong>worrying about work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors adding to IT Pro&#8217;s holiday stress included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>53% said they thought their colleagues are <strong>overworked and overstretched.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>41% claimed to have had <strong>unfilled vacancies<\/strong> in their teams for a month or more in 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AlienVault security advocate, Javvad Malik, argued that shortages are not always down to a lack of available talent. He told <em>Infosecurity<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>On the other side of the coin is the willingness of companies to invest into more staff &#8230; Particularly in small, but growing companies where we often see a company\u2019s infrastructure may grow rapidly, yet the IT team doesn\u2019t scale at the same rate.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-96953\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_theft1.jpg?resize=137%2C102&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_theft1.jpg?w=224&amp;ssl=1 224w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_theft1.jpg?resize=75%2C56&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/data_theft1.jpg?resize=150%2C112&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/>Data breach stress<\/h3>\n<p>Another reason leading to holiday <a title=\"Occupational stress\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occupational_stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">workplace stress<\/a> cited in the article is <strong>data breaches<\/strong>. Almost a quarter (21%) of respondents said that when a security breach happens the <strong>IT teams are blamed<\/strong>. The author speculates that might explain why 14% said that would cover up a breach and not report it, if it didn\u2019t involve regulated data.<\/p>\n<p>IT teams are also increasingly ready to <a title=\"Turning a blind eye\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turning_a_blind_eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">turn a blind eye<\/a> to users bypassing <a title=\"Security controls\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Security_controls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">security controls<\/a>. If it makes their job easier in the short term. AlienVault&#8217;s Malik explained there could be several reasons why some IT staff turn a blind eye to employees bypassing controls. Sometimes this is as a result of controls being implemented by those unfamiliar with the day-to-day operations, or even because of compliance regulations.
