Typically, a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Chatterbot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chatterbot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">chatbot<\/a> will communicate with a real person, but applications are being developed in which two chatbots can communicate with each other. Chatbots are used in applications such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webopedia.com\/TERM\/E\/electronic_commerce.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-commerce<\/a>\u00a0customer service and call centers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/research\/technology\/google-chatbot-053421\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115108\" title=\"decide how to use chatbots\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_side-1-e1596897071597-140x150.jpg?resize=93%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"decide how to use chatbots\" width=\"93\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_side-1-e1596897071597.jpg?resize=140%2C150&amp;ssl=1 140w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_side-1-e1596897071597.jpg?resize=70%2C75&amp;ssl=1 70w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_side-1-e1596897071597.jpg?w=537&amp;ssl=1 537w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 93px) 100vw, 93px\" \/><\/a>Banks trying to decide how to use chatbots include Ally, BBVA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bank of America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banking.barclaysus.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barclays<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capital One<\/a>, Societe General\/a&gt;, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USAA<\/a>.\u00a0 A survey conducted by Personetics found that <strong>87% of bankers say they plan to do something with chatbots by 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Penny Crosman, the author reports that a growing number of vendors are offering prefab <strong>chatbots trained with documents, data, and conversations<\/strong> about financial products and topics. Some are intended to replicate the interaction with a human, while others are styled more like workhorses. The author describes four types of chatbots being used today.<\/p>\n<h3>Types of chatbots<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The conversationalist<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/kasisto.com\/kai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kai<\/a> is the Chatbot from<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/kasisto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kasisto<\/a><\/strong>. Kasisto is a spinoff of the research lab, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sri.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SRI International<\/a>. SRI developed the first public <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Artificial intelligence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> (AI)<\/a> Siri, which <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190508075132\/https:\/\/www.sri.com\/work\/timeline-innovation\/timeline.php?timeline=computing-digital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple purchased<\/a> in 2010 for use in the iPhone.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210726135938\/https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3430257\/how-uk-banks-are-looking-to-use-ai-and-machine-learning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115104\" title=\"The conversational chatbot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/chatbots-invasion-2-e1596897348251-150x99.jpg?resize=100%2C66&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The conversational chatbot\" width=\"100\" height=\"66\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/chatbots-invasion-2-e1596897348251.jpg?resize=150%2C99&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/chatbots-invasion-2-e1596897348251.jpg?resize=75%2C49&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/chatbots-invasion-2-e1596897348251.jpg?resize=768%2C505&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/chatbots-invasion-2-e1596897348251.jpg?w=998&amp;ssl=1 998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>SearchCIO<\/em> defines AI as the <strong>simulation of human intelligence<\/strong> processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include <strong>learning<\/strong>, <strong>reasoning<\/strong>, and <strong>self-correction<\/strong>. Particular <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Applications of artificial intelligence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Applications_of_artificial_intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">applications of AI<\/a> include expert systems, speech recognition, and machine vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\/siri\/\">Siri<\/a> knows a lot \u2014 it\u2019s very broad but very shallow,<\/em>\u201d Zor Gorelov, CEO and co-founder of Kasisto. A group of SRI researchers realized a financial services chatbot would have to be narrow and deep and started working on one.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/en\/\">BBVA<\/a>\u00a0approached the group in 2009. BBVA was looking for<strong>\u00a0human-like interactions<\/strong> from a chatbot, and the two organizations partnered to create a <strong>virtual banking assistant<\/strong>. Mr. Gorelov said the SRI researchers \u201c<em>interviewed people across the banking universe at BBVA &#8230; transcribed tens of thousands of calls<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kasisto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115105 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Kasisto logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_kasisto.png?resize=75%2C19&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kasisto logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"19\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_kasisto.png?resize=75%2C19&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_kasisto.png?resize=150%2C39&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_kasisto.png?w=629&amp;ssl=1 629w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>A staff of full-time writers called \u201c<strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> interaction designers\u201d produces dialogues for Kai. <em>American Banker<\/em> says they also constantly monitor the behavior and user interactions. General banking knowledge has also been embedded. \u201c<em>You can ask Kai questions about CDs, IRAs, credit scores \u2014 it\u2019s the smartest banker you can imagine from a customer onboarding point of view: how do I open an account, what document do I need<\/em>?\u201d Kasisto\u2019s Gorelov says there are 10 to 11 messages exchanged between Kai and users during an average session,<\/p>\n<p>The article noted that Kai is used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbs.com\/digibank\/in\/index.html\">digibank,<\/a> a mobile-only bank launched in India by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"DBS Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dbs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage nofollow noopener noreferrer\">DBS Bank<\/a> in Singapore, and it\u2019s being piloted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/personal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Bank of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cilisos.my\/to-try-and-predict-ge14-these-guys-surveyed-more-than-100000-malaysians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115106\" title=\"The doer chatbot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot-callcenter-e1596897491553-150x98.jpg?resize=100%2C66&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The doer chatbot\" width=\"100\" height=\"66\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot-callcenter-e1596897491553.jpg?resize=150%2C98&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot-callcenter-e1596897491553.jpg?resize=75%2C49&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot-callcenter-e1596897491553.jpg?w=270&amp;ssl=1 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>The Doer<\/strong> &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/personetics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Personetics<\/a><\/strong> has built a library of customer insights for its chatbots. Its builders fed the chatbot technology financial services information for five years and fueled it with unsupervised and supervised<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/machine-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">machine learning<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/searchcontentmanagement.techtarget.com\/definition\/natural-language-processing-NLP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural language understanding<\/a>, logic inference, and associative knowledge<\/strong> according to <em>AB<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>While other chatbots might aim to simulate a real conversation, Personetics tries to make it clear the customer is not dealing with a human to avoid potential confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Eran Livneh, vice president of Personetics explained the chatbot is akin to an employee who understands banking and serving customers really well. The <strong>chatbots can walk customers through steps, provide predictive messages and behavior insights, and automatically perform tasks<\/strong> like money management.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220114230950\/https:\/\/personetics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115107\" title=\"Personetics logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_personetics.png?resize=100%2C18&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Personetics logo\" width=\"100\" height=\"18\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_personetics.png?resize=150%2C27&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_personetics.png?resize=75%2C13&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/logo_personetics.png?w=185&amp;ssl=1 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>So though they can \u201cchat\u201d with customers, they\u2019re primarily designed to actually do things for them.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ally.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ally Bank<\/a> and Societe Generale\u00a0use chatbots by\u00a0 Personetics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The linguist <\/strong>&#8211; Montreal-based software company <strong>North Side<\/strong>, specializes in giving its chatbot, <strong>VerbalAccess<\/strong>, a precise understanding of language, whether spoken or typed, through natural language processing technology.<\/p>\n<p>The article notes that North Side didn\u2019t start out in banking. Originally it created a video game that lets players communicate with characters. \u201c<em>That\u2019s how we made our <strong>natural language<\/strong> understanding pipeline robust,<\/em>\u201d said Eugene Joseph, North Side&#8217;s CEO.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wasabilips.com\/2010\/04\/android-running-on-the-iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115109\" title=\"The linguist chatbot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/forbidden_planet-1.jpg?resize=74%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The linguist chatbot\" width=\"74\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>North Side doesn\u2019t try to glean insights from analyzing customer behavior. Instead, <strong>it takes commands and acts on them<\/strong>, such as making a payment or displaying a transaction. If a user asks, \u201cWhat have I spent on coffee in the last month?\u201d North Side\u2019s <strong>chatbot will understand the question and translate it to an API call that will extract the answer automatically<\/strong>. It would make the same calls that might be made by a mobile banking app or online banking site, but with the added ability to translate from the imprecise way a human might ask something to language the software can understand..<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>chatbot is trained to clarify users\u2019 questions<\/strong>. \u201c<em>If what is said is incomplete, it will elicit the missing information<\/em>,\u201d Mr.Joseph said. \u201c<em>That\u2019s very important because people speak in an incomplete way. We know what to ask for<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Teller &#8211;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2017\/01\/15\/how-i-built-and-launched-a-personal-finance-chatbot-in-six-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidharth Garg<\/a> began working on his chatbot, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221006184914\/https:\/\/www.textteller.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teller<\/a><\/strong>, while at Columbia Business School. He told <em>AB,<\/em> \u201c<em>I wanted to use the recent advances in natural language processing and the opening of messaging platforms to help people learn the basics of personal finance.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/new-york\/20141031\/civic-center\/city-worker-gets-20-day-suspension-for-using-robot-voice-answer-phone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115110\" title=\"The Teller chatbot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_worker-e1596897875860-150x130.jpg?resize=100%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Teller chatbot\" width=\"100\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_worker-e1596897875860.jpg?resize=150%2C130&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_worker-e1596897875860.jpg?resize=75%2C65&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/robot_worker-e1596897875860.jpg?w=292&amp;ssl=1 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>To feed Teller the information to answer customers\u2019 questions, he went through blogs and personal finance books, attempting to answer every general personal finance question he could think of. Mr. Garg explained the goal was to make retirement options easy to understand. He \u201c<em>&#8230;put together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buzzfeed<\/a>-style graphics that explain the different types of retirement accounts into something someone could understand on their mobile device.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He decided to focus on the business-to-consumer market. \u201c<em>People are more inclined to chat with a banking assistant that comes from an institution they already trust,<\/em>\u201d Mr. Garg told the author. \u201c<em>They already have a captive audience of customers and they would also allow for easy integration with their bank accounts.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, he\u2019s been running a pilot program with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklyn.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union<\/a> that has provided more <strong>real-world data to train the chatbot<\/strong>. For now, the bot is answering only the most general questions for the credit union\u2019s customers. Eventually, the plan is to integrate the chatbot with the credit union\u2019s back-end system, to let it answer questions specific to customers\u2019 accounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have written about chatbots a <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-l4G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">couple<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-ljP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">times<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach Seat<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/google-allo-smart-reply-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/videos\/bot-invasion-prepare-for-chatbots-on-facebook-messenger-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/microsoft-ceo-on-crazy-tay-ai-it-was-not-up-to-the-mark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a>, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/7\/13\/12170682\/pizza-hut-chatbot-catch-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pizza Hut<\/a> are experimenting with bot-to-human interactions.\u00a0 Chatbots will get smarter as more people keep using them, and as developers perfect the tools to turn the software into what people want and need.
