The typical advice to stay safe on the Intertubes is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.ie\/irish-news\/think-before-you-click-site-warns-teenagers-26273734.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">think before you click<\/a>. But why should you care and what should you think about before you click on a link in your email or on <strong>Facebook<\/strong>?\u00a0 Email is the leading source of attacks at home and at work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.kaspersky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaspersky<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/analysis\/kaspersky-security-bulletin\/69225\/kaspersky-security-bulletin-spam-in-2014\/\">reports<\/a> that over <strong>2\/3 of emails<\/strong> sent in 2014 were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180707012633\/http:\/\/spam.abuse.net:80\/overview\/whatisspam.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SPAM<\/a><\/strong>. Merely clicking on a SPAM link can lead to password and data theft, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170326092047\/https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/sir\/glossary\/drive-by-download-sites.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cdrive-by\u201d malware downloads<\/a>. In order to stay safe at work and at home <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2015\/05\/22\/5-security-questions-ask-clicking-link\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESet<\/a> wants you to <strong>ask yourself these questions before you click on any link<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coburgbanks.co.uk\/blog\/attracting-staff\/10-tips-successfully-hiring-passive-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115234\" title=\"Do you trust the person sending or posting the link?\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_cheeset_sales-1-e1598317886224-116x150.png?resize=77%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Do you trust the person sending or posting the link?\" width=\"77\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_cheeset_sales-1-e1598317886224.png?resize=116%2C150&amp;ssl=1 116w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_cheeset_sales-1-e1598317886224.png?resize=58%2C75&amp;ssl=1 58w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/man_cheeset_sales-1-e1598317886224.png?w=234&amp;ssl=1 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 77px) 100vw, 77px\" \/><\/a><strong>Do you trust the person sending or posting the link?<\/strong> People have gotten better at distinguishing good emails and links from bad. Nonetheless, you still need to be alert, so the first question to ask yourself is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do I trust the person sending or sharing this link? If you don\u2019t recognize the name, the email account, or the content, delete it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. <strong>Do you trust the platform?<\/strong> Here\u2019s what we mean by \u201cplatform\u201d: A link shared on your company\u2019s private Intranet is likely to be safe. But anybody can send you an email \u2014 so be skeptical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businessroot.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/30\/is-social-media-bad-for-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115235\" title=\"many social media accounts are fake and pose a risk\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/social_media_bad.jpg?resize=100%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"many social media accounts are fake and pose a risk\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/social_media_bad.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/social_media_bad.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/social_media_bad.jpg?w=225&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>Pay special attention to <a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : TWTR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-TWTR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TWTR<\/a>) and <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : FB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FB<\/a>), as both social media sites have been hit by copious amounts of spam. Online security experts have found that <strong>many social media accounts are fake and pose a risk<\/strong> to anyone they come in contact with.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160620054840\/http:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/social-media-managers-and-it-security-professionals-to-work-together-in-2015\/article\/387964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Researchers<\/a> say that an average of <strong>40% of Facebook and 20% of Twitter accounts<\/strong> claiming to represent a Fortune 100 brand <strong>are fake<\/strong>. 99% of malicious <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Uniform Resource Locator\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uniform_Resource_Locator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">URLs<\/a> posted on social media channels led to m<strong>alware or phishing attacks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. Does this link <strong>coincide with a major world event<\/strong>? Cybercriminals seize any opportunity to get someone to click a link. They commonly use news events like natural disasters, Olympics, and World Cups to lure victims to identity theft<strong>\u00a0or malware sites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.butterats.org\/how-new-gtlds-changed-the-online-branding-game-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-115237\" title=\"Do you trust the destination\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/TLDs.png?resize=100%2C71&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Do you trust the destination\" width=\"100\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/TLDs.png?resize=150%2C107&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/TLDs.png?resize=75%2C53&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/TLDs.png?w=768&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>4.<strong> Do you trust the destination?<\/strong> Look at the link that has been shared. Does it go to a website you recognize? If you don\u2019t trust or don\u2019t know, the destination, don\u2019t click the link.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5. <strong>Is it a shortened link?<\/strong> The rise of social media, especially Twitter, has prompted people to shorten links for convenience. Bad guys can easily shorten scam links, making them harder to spot.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With shortened links, the advice is clear; ask yourself the above four questions and if you\u2019re unsure still, use <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160318022903\/http:\/\/longurl.org:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LongURL<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/checkshorturl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CheckShortURL<\/a>, to restore the shortened link to its original length.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Even if you follow this advice, you still need to be alert.
