But it packs a number of tricks designed to woo business users.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107329\" title=\"Cisco logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cisco_logo-5.jpg?resize=100%2C61&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cisco logo\" width=\"100\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cisco_logo-5.jpg?w=136&amp;ssl=1 136w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cisco_logo-5.jpg?resize=75%2C46&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"www.tested.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tested.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Tested.com<\/em><\/a> <a title=\"www.tested.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110706212852\/http:\/\/www.tested.com:80\/news\/cisco-still-thinks-an-android-froyo-tablet-is-a-good-idea\/2542\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the Cius can connect to a Cisco phone network to port calls from a desk number to the tablet in order to make a user&#8217;s desk number mobile. This will enable a person to make and receive voice and video calls anywhere. The tablet features HD quality cameras front and back and can be used with a <a title=\"Bluetooth\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Bluetooth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bluetooth<\/a> headset for more private calling.<\/p>\n<p>The tablet can also be used as a desktop videoconferencing device when docked on a special desktop phone, and can smoothly switch between a <a title=\"Wi-Fi\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Wi-Fi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">WiFi<\/a> a cellular network connection. The Cius can be docked to serve as a videoconferencing device. The dock supports a keyboard and mouse, so the Cius really can serve as a little computer, &#8220;It can replace my desktop operating system,&#8221; says <a title=\"Cisco\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/author\/tompuorro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Puorro<\/a>, senior director for Cisco&#8217;s collaboration technologies told <em>Technology Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/en\/US\/prod\/collateral\/voicesw\/ps6789\/ps7290\/ps11156\/data_sheet_c78-609507.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107331 size-medium\" title=\"Cisco Cius\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/cisco_cius.jpg?resize=150%2C80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"80\" \/><\/a><em>Tested.com<\/em> says the tablet runs <a title=\"www.google.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>&#8216;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) Android 2.2 <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/android-froyo-with-some-sprinkles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Froyo<\/a> on an <a title=\"Intel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intel<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-INTC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">INTC<\/a>) Z650 1.6GHz <a title=\"Intel Atom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/products\/sku\/55664\/intel-atom-processor-z650-512k-cache-1-20-ghz\/ordering.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Atom chip<\/a> and weighs 1.5 pounds despite its small 7\u201d screen. <em>Tested.com <\/em> speculates that Cisco has heavily modified the open-source Android to support business-centric features like multi-person videoconferencing and <a title=\"Virtual desktop\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virtual_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">virtual desktop software<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Engadet\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090307213552\/http:\/\/www.engadet.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engadget<\/a> has a video demo of the product <strong><a title=\"Engadet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.viddler.com\/explore\/engadget\/videos\/2935\/%20.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fully skinned Android tablet seems like a relic of 2010 thanks to the arrival of Honeycomb, a version of Android actually built for tablets&#8211;which the Cius isn\u2019t running. <em>Tested.com<\/em> says Cisco plans to upgrade the tablet to Android <a title=\"gizmodo.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181204133240\/https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5800358\/what-is-androids-ice-cream-sandwich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ice Cream Sandwich<\/a> eventually, but for now, it\u2019s slumming around with version 2.2 (Froyo). Cisco probably spent too much time developing its custom skin and software to upgrade to Android version 2.3 (<a title=\"www.computerworld.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140810182540\/http:\/\/blogs.computerworld.com\/17479\/android_gingerbread_faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gingerbread<\/a>) or version 3.0 (<a title=\"developer.android.com\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/sdk\/android-3.0-highlights.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Honeycomb<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/developer.android.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-107334\" title=\"Cisu runs on Android\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/android_logo-1.jpg?resize=100%2C97&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cisu runs on Android\" width=\"100\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/android_logo-1.jpg?w=134&amp;ssl=1 134w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/android_logo-1.jpg?resize=75%2C73&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><\/em>Cisco has also created its own app store, <a title=\"marketplace.cisco.com\/apphq\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180521144218\/https:\/\/marketplace.cisco.com\/apphq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AppHQ<\/a>, that has only apps deemed stable and secure by Cisco and segregated it from the Android app market. This gives the IT department greater control over what a Cius user can do. IT managers can shut down access to the Android app market to protect a company from malicious apps according to <em>Technology Review<\/em>. Companies can even create their own app store within AppHQ and limit employees to certain applications, or apps built in-house.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco has demonstrated a Cius virtual desktop that runs in the cloud and makes use of a dedicated chip in the tablet that encrypts all its data says <em>Technology Review<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet will be available worldwide from July 31 at an estimated price of $750. Cisco will sell it along with related services and infrastructure, so the cost to businesses will vary, and could be as low as $650. <a title=\"AT&amp;T\" href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2011\/05\/11\/cisco-cius-att\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a> and Verizon will each offer versions for their 3G and 4G networks this fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I wrote about the Cius <a title=\"rbach.net\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-1DH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and don&#8217;t think it is an Apple Killer. Cisco will give its big partners a deal, but Cius also depends on an existing Cisco telephony infrastructure. I don&#8217;t see the Cius fitting in the Cisco product line-up since they jettisoned the Flip and are reportedly <a title=\"www.informationweek.com\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120711005022\/http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/news\/infrastructure\/routers\/229625568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shopping<\/a> Linksys and WebEx.
