For reference, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/millions-lines-of-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual Capitalist<\/a> <\/em>calculates that a million lines of code (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aivosto.com\/project\/help\/pm-loc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLOC<\/a>), if printed, would be about 18,000 pages of text. That\u2019s 14x the length of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leo_Tolstoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Tolstoy&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_and_Peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>War and Peace<\/em><\/a>. The<strong> total lines of code to run systems<\/strong> vary widely as Mr. McCandless shows in the infographic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philnel.com\/2010\/10\/14\/procrastigrading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104604 size-medium\" title=\"Stack of paper\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-papers.jpeg?resize=80%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Stack of paper\" width=\"80\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-papers.jpeg?resize=80%2C150&amp;ssl=1 80w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-papers.jpeg?resize=40%2C75&amp;ssl=1 40w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/stack-of-papers.jpeg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/><\/a>It took less than a million lines of code to run the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/audience\/forstudents\/k-4\/stories\/nasa-knows\/what-is-the-space-shuttle-k4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Space Shuttle<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u2022 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarsCuriosity?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mars Rover Curiosity<\/a> takes less than 5 million lines of code to run.<br \/>\n\u2022 The latest version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/desktop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Firefox web browser<\/a> includes just under 10 million lines of code.<br \/>\n\u2022 <a title=\"General Motors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">General Motors&#8217;<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : GM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NYSE:GM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chevrolet.com\/volt-electric-car.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chevy Volt <\/a>requires just over 10 million lines of code.<br \/>\n\u2022 <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?cid=358464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) <a title=\"Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsoft_Office_2008_for_Mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Office 2008<\/a> for the\u00a0<a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) Mac consists of over 35 million lines of code.<br \/>\n\u2022 And it took 50 million lines of code to bring us <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170218012604\/http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/2956577\/microsoft-windows\/so-long-vista-its-been-good-to-know-yah.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Vista<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u2022 Finally, all <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) services combine for a whopping 2 billion lines \u2013 that means it would take 36 million pages to \u201cprint out\u201d all of the code behind all Google services.
