Silicon Valley\" width=\"150\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/detroit_skyline-2.png?resize=150%2C75&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/detroit_skyline-2.png?resize=75%2C37&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/detroit_skyline-2.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Back in April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2017\/4\/3\/15160462\/tesla-ford-deliveries-record-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tech sector<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.com.au\/2017\/04\/tesla-is-worth-more-than-ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaping for joy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/now-that-tesla-is-worth-more-than-gm-maybe-musk-can-fix-the-companys-absurd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">when Tesla\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.com.au\/2017\/04\/tesla-is-worth-more-than-ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stock market valuation<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2017\/4\/3\/15160462\/tesla-ford-deliveries-record-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed Ford and GM<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/04\/04\/tesla-now-worth-more-than-gm-making-it-the-most-valuable-u-s-automaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rumors<\/a> abound in Silicon Valley that Tesla is the future of transportation and Elon Musk is the king of cars because they took more orders for cars that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/cars\/2017\/02\/08\/tesla-explosion-fire-were-factors-crash-deaths\/97641474\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">did not<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2016\/08\/tesla-model-s-france-battery-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burn up<\/a> or crash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/jun\/30\/tesla-autopilot-death-self-driving-car-elon-musk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">out of control<\/a>. In 2016 Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/04\/03\/according-to-the-stock-market-tesla-is-now-worth-more-than-ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">delivered<\/a> only 76,000 vehicles. The <strong>west coast upstarts<\/strong> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uber<\/a>, <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/chart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TLSA<\/a>) \u2014 still have <strong>a lot of catching up to do<\/strong> when it comes to outpacing Michigan manufacturers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/3\/15164336\/detroit-vs-silicon-valley-self-driving-car-navigant-ranking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a> points us to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200409100436\/https:\/\/www.navigantresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navigant Research<\/a>, whose newly released\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171126154656\/https:\/\/www.navigantresearch.com\/research\/navigant-research-leaderboard-report-automated-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaderboard<\/a>\u201d report\u00a0ranks autonomous vehicle players\u00a0not just on their ability to make a car drive itself, but on their <strong>ability to bring that car\u00a0to the mass market<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/3\/15164336\/detroit-vs-silicon-valley-self-driving-car-navigant-ranking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Navigant Research scored 18 companies working on <strong>self-driving technology<\/strong> on 10 different criteria related to strategy, manufacturing, and execution. The report combined all that into an overall score to get a sense of who\u2019s ahead and who\u2019s not. <strong><a title=\"General Motors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">General Motors<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : GM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NYSE:GM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM<\/a>) and <a title=\"Ford\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford<\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : F\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-F\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F<\/a>) are currently leading the pack<\/strong>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daimler.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daimler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nissan-global.com\/EN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renault-Nissan<\/a> close behind. Those four companies make up Navigant\u2019s <strong>\u201cleader\u201d category<\/strong>. This includes car companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BMW<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupe-psa.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PSA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundaiusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyundai<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toyota-global.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toyota<\/a>, <strong>Tesla<\/strong>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volkswagen<\/a>; suppliers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borgwarner.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020\/10\/02\/borgwarner-completes-acquisition-of-delphi-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delphi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zf.com\/mobile\/en\/company\/company.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZF<\/a>; and tech firms like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alphabet\u2019s Waymo<\/a><\/strong>. Further down the list, in the <strong>\u201cchallengers\u201d<\/strong> category, are companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Honda<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211217211913\/http:\/\/nutonomy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuTonomy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.baidu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baidu<\/a>, and <strong>Uber<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Detroit is beating Silicon Valley<a href=\"https:\/\/www.assemblymag.com\/articles\/91943-gm-rethinks-line-side-parts-delivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104380 size-medium\" title=\"GM Assembly line\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gm_assembly_line.jpg?resize=150%2C85&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"GM Assembly line\" width=\"150\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gm_assembly_line.jpg?resize=150%2C85&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gm_assembly_line.jpg?resize=75%2C43&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/gm_assembly_line.jpg?w=615&amp;ssl=1 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Sam Abuelsamid, a senior research analyst at Navigant and one of the authors of the report, told t<em>he Verge<\/em> the<strong> reason Detroit beating Silicon Valley so badly<\/strong> in this all-too-crucial race to get autonomous vehicles on the road is because of <strong>experience<\/strong>. He says, Silicon Valley, \u201c \u2026. will have to do deals with someone to <strong>get actual vehicles<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet&#8217;s <strong>Waymo<\/strong>, scores top marks for technology but drags in the production strategy and sales, marketing, and distribution buckets. The company <strong>plans to work\u00a0with legacy automakers<\/strong> to put its tech in cars, but has not yet struck any major deals. Mr. Abuelsamid detailed on an email with <em>the Verge <\/em>that Waymo is in the best position of the contenders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waymo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104383 size-thumbnail\" title=\"Waymo logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_logo.png?resize=75%2C47&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Waymo logo\" width=\"75\" height=\"47\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_logo.png?resize=75%2C47&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_logo.png?resize=150%2C93&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_logo.png?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>They have almost every piece of this\u2014except the product strategy &#8230; Waymo has what is arguably the best technology right now, although they probably aren\u2019t that far ahead of the leading [original equipment manufacturers] but they will have to do deals with someone to get actual vehicles\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite Uber\u2019s high profile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2016\/05\/19\/on-demand-ride-hailing-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent study<\/a> showed that <strong>only 15%<\/strong> of U.S. consumers have <strong>tried a ride-hailing app<\/strong> like Uber. Uber also has a safety problem &#8211; Uber drivers have been charged with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2016\/03\/14\/kalamazoo-shooting-reports-released-what-he-told-his-wife\/81762070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">murder<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/how-risky-is-your-uber-ride-maybe-more-than-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violent crimes<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/uber-drivers-accused-of-32-rapes-and-sex-attacks-on-london-passengers-a7037926.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against their customers<\/a>.\u00a0 In the Navigant research, <strong>Uber wallows near last place<\/strong> thanks to low grades for distribution, product portfolio, and staying power\u2014and because makes<strong> Uber makes neither cars nor money<\/strong>. In fact, its key strength\u2014that it already operates a global fleet of shared vehicles\u2014may not be enough here. \u201c<em>It\u2019s a lot easier for the company that actually has the infrastructure to create vehicles to recreate what Uber\u2019s done, than the other way around<\/em>,\u201d Mr. Abuelsamid says.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Scale matters in the auto industry.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Navigant analyst explained <strong>scale matter<\/strong>s in the auto industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>All the little [Silicon Valley] startups may have some interesting ideas, but they don\u2019t have the resources to produce something sufficiently robust to be commercially viable. If they have something good to offer, their best bet is an acquisition<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150409174206\/http:\/\/mspmentor.net\/msp-mergers-and-acquisitions\/msp-mergers-and-acquisitions-where-do-consultants-fit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104386 size-medium\" title=\"Mergers and acquistions\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mergers-acquisitions-e1568474209552-150x67.jpg?resize=150%2C67&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mergers and acquistions\" width=\"150\" height=\"67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mergers-acquisitions-e1568474209552.jpg?resize=150%2C67&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mergers-acquisitions-e1568474209552.jpg?resize=75%2C33&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mergers-acquisitions-e1568474209552.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The &#8220;legacy automakers&#8221; have engaged in mergers and acquisitions and\u00a0<strong>early maneuvering<\/strong> in the autonomous vehicle arena as Mr. Abuelsamid stated. The report predicts that <strong>big companies will buy little startups<\/strong> to leverage their <strong>technology and expertise<\/strong> to round out the much larger-scale enterprise of developing, testing, validating, producing, and distributing self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/\"><em>Wired<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/04\/detroit-stomping-silicon-valley-self-driving-car-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> <strong>Ford and GM<\/strong> both score in the low to mid 80s on the technology front; it\u2019s their <strong>old-school skills that float them to first and second place<\/strong>. They\u2019ve each spent more than a century developing, testing, producing, marketing, distributing, and selling cars. GM said the acquisition will allow it to &#8220;<strong>accelerate&#8221; its autonomous vehicle development efforts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ford has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/02\/eyeing-self-driving-future-ford-drops-1b-ai-startup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> an investment of $1 billion over the next five years in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/news\/technology\/a41789388\/argo-ai-autonomous-developer-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Argo AI<\/a>, a startup run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carnegie Mellon<\/a> roboticists and engineers who really know their <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/5\/10\/15609844\/waymo-google-self-driving-cars-3-million-miles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-104390 size-medium\" title=\"Waymo Chryslet Pacifica\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_chrysler_pacifica-e1568474415251-150x87.jpg?resize=150%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Waymo Chryslet Pacifica\" width=\"150\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_chrysler_pacifica-e1568474415251.jpg?resize=150%2C87&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_chrysler_pacifica-e1568474415251.jpg?resize=75%2C44&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_chrysler_pacifica-e1568474415251.jpg?resize=768%2C446&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/waymo_chrysler_pacifica-e1568474415251.jpg?w=851&amp;ssl=1 851w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcagroup.com\/en-US\/Pages\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiat Chrysler<\/a> has partnered with Alphabet to jointly <strong>test autonomous technology<\/strong> in Pacifica minivans, and Alphabet is opening a 53,000 square foot <strong>self-driving car <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2016\/05\/25\/google-open-self-driving-car-tech-center-novi\/84910464\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>development center<\/strong><\/a> near Detroit in <strong>Novi, MI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>GM has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2817,2497397,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invested<\/a> $500 million in ride-sharing provider <strong>Lyft<\/strong> to beef up its ridesharing service. In the \u201clong-term strategic alliance,&#8221; the companies will work on what they call &#8220;<strong>on-demand autonomous vehicles<\/strong>.&#8221; For now, the deal means GM cars will be the &#8220;preferred&#8221; vehicle used by Lyft drivers who rent their cars in various U.S. cities. Those vehicles will tap into GM&#8217;s <strong>OnStar<\/strong> service, while GM and Lyft promised &#8220;<strong>personalized mobility services and experiences<\/strong>,&#8221; but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/cars\/2016\/08\/28\/tech-firm-velodyne-moves-audio-self-driving-cars\/89525612\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Ford invested $75 million iin LiDAR maker Velodyne\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/757b8fe866189f8d8c889b60183bb23568e3c93d\/c%3D0-112-900-789%26r%3Dx404%26c%3D534x401\/local\/-\/media\/2016\/08\/28\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/636080248381092813-velodyne.JPG?resize=101%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ford invested $75 million iin LiDAR maker Velodyne\" width=\"101\" height=\"76\" \/><\/a>Ford, meanwhile, recently <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/cars-that-think\/transportation\/sensors\/ford-and-baidu-invest-150-million-in-velodyne-for-affordable-automotive-lidar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> a $75 million investment in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/02\/12\/wtf-is-lidar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LiDAR<\/a> maker Velodyne<\/strong>, to &#8220;quickly mass-produce a more affordable automotive LiDAR sensor&#8221; so the company can launch a fleet of self-driving ride-sharing cars by 2021<\/p>\n<p>Ford has also <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/08\/16\/ford-acquires-saips-for-self-driving-machine-learning-and-computer-vision-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquired<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230530111024\/https:\/\/www.saips.co.il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SAIPS<\/a>, an Israeli <strong>machine learning<\/strong> firm to further strengthen its ability in <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> and <strong>computer vision<\/strong>. SAIPS has developed algorithmic solutions in image and video processing, deep learning, signal processing and classification. This expertise will help Ford autonomous vehicles learn and adapt to the surroundings of their environment<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/civilmaps.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-104394\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/civicmaps_logo.jpg?resize=143%2C52&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"143\" height=\"52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/civicmaps_logo.jpg?w=143&amp;ssl=1 143w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/civicmaps_logo.jpg?resize=75%2C27&amp;ssl=1 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a>Ford <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2016\/07\/15\/mapping-startup-civil-maps-raises-6-6m-from-ford-and-others-to-accelerate-self-driving-car-smarts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that it would take part in a $6.6 million seed funding round for <a href=\"https:\/\/civilmaps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civil Maps<\/a> to further develop <strong>high-resolution 3D mapping capabilities<\/strong>. This provides Ford another way to develop high-resolution 3D maps of autonomous vehicle environments. Ford has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/09\/ford-acquires-demand-shuttle-service-chariot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agreed<\/a> to acquire <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220430051726\/https:\/\/www.chariot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chariot<\/a>, an <strong>on-demand shuttle service<\/strong> based in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abuelsamid predicts that early on,\u00a0 you probably won\u2019t be buying a self-driving car at a dealership, but rather riding in one that you hail through an <strong>app-based service<\/strong> like Uber or Lyft. These <strong>vehicles will be part of a fleet owned by a manufacturer<\/strong>, like Ford or GM. Fleet ownership will help manufacturers <strong>manage the issues<\/strong> self-driving vehicles are likely to encounter early on, like <strong>insurance<\/strong> for the inevitable accidents.
