You would think that after over nine months of bidding and <strong>2 trillion yen<\/strong> ($17.7 billion) the victors would like to gloat. A win of that size would be celebrated, but nooo&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The winning partners lead by venture capitalist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baincapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bain Capital<\/a><\/strong> and Apple can&#8217;t even agree on when to hold a presser to announce their purchase. The consortium had planned a presser for 09-28-2017, which was abruptly canceled just minutes before it was due to begin according to reports. <em>Reuters<\/em> reports that \u201c\u2026the consortium could not form a consensus on whether to brief media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220309021246\/https:\/\/www.wonderopolis.org\/wonder\/where-is-pangaea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Pangea\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151004201603\/http%3A\/\/www.wonderopolis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2013\/09\/dreamstime_xxl_10757126.jpg?resize=75%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pangea\" width=\"75\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>One wrinkle may be that<strong> <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) has demanded new terms on its chip supply for the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone-x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iPhone<\/a>s. In addition to Apple, Bain\u2019s consortium &#8220;<strong>Pangea<\/strong>&#8221; includes Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"inline_quotes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=7741.T-JP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gdsid=\"6645\" data-inline-quote-symbol=\"7741.T-JP\">Hoya Corporation<\/a>, South Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"inline_quotes\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170626210611\/http:\/\/www.cnbc.com:80\/quotes\/?symbol=66-KR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" gdsid=\"264\" symbol=\"66-KR\">SK Hynix<\/a>, and U.S. investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingston.com\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kingston Technology<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"inline_quotes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seagate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gdsid=\"33287\" data-inline-quote-symbol=\"STX\">Seagate Technology<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=STX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STX)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delltechnologies.com\/en-us\/capital.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell Technologies Capital<\/a>.- all of which want access to NAND technology.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal, Toshiba will have 40.2 percent of voting rights in the chip unit and Hoya will own 9.9 percent. The four U.S. tech firms will not have voting rights.<\/p>\n<p>Besides internal strife, the sale also faces legal challenges from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Western Digita<\/a>l<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-WDC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WDC<\/a>), Toshiba\u2019s chip venture partner, and rejected suitor, which is seeking an injunction to block any deal that does not have its consent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westerndigital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-113407\" title=\"Western Digital logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Logo_Western-Digital.png?resize=120%2C85&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Western Digital logo\" width=\"120\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a>Western Digital, one of the world\u2019s leading makers of hard disk drives, paid some $16 billion last year to acquire SanDisk, Toshiba\u2019s chip joint venture partner since 2000.
