{"id":85380,"date":"2018-09-24T20:45:48","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T00:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbach.net\/blog\/index.php\/"},"modified":"2021-07-17T16:06:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T20:06:58","slug":"att-still-trying-bpl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/att-still-trying-bpl\/","title":{"rendered":"AT&#038;T Still Trying BPL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dragonflycap.com\/deja-vu-all-over-again-with-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"at&amp;t bpl still trying noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"AT&amp;T Still Trying BPL\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dragonflycap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Yogi-Berra-18_zpsrcpexoip.png?resize=113%2C107\" alt=\"AT&amp;T Still Trying BPL\" width=\"113\" height=\"107\" \/><\/a>Fresh off its dismantling of net neutrality and its drunken binge of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171223084922\/https:\/\/www.fiercecable.com\/cable\/comcast-at-t-trickle-down-1k-bonuses-to-employees-after-corporate-tax-bonanza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bribing its staff<\/a>, <a title=\"AT&amp;T\" href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AT&amp;T<\/strong><\/a> (<a title=\"NYSE : T\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a>) has launched two field trials of its <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/story\/2018\/airgig.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AirGig<\/strong><\/a> technology, fueling hopes it can gain broader acceptance of its version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/blog\/?p=58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">failed<\/a> <strong>broadband over powerline <\/strong>(BPL) technology. The AirGig plan, as <a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrtc.coop\/rural-connect\/at-t-takes-another-crack-at-internet-using-electric-infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-tabindex-counter=\"1\" data-tabindex-value=\"none\">AT&amp;T explained in 2016<\/a>, is to use millimeter-wave radio signals (above 24 GHz) to travel along power lines. Radios on the power lines would regularly refresh the signal as it travels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bakerontech.com\/att-labs-project-airgig-nears-first-field-trials-for-ultra-fast-wireless-broadband-over-power-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"at&amp;t kogo noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"At&amp;T kogo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bakerontech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/att_416x416.jpg?resize=81%2C81\" alt=\"At&amp;T kogo\" width=\"81\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240319182555\/https:\/\/www.fiercetelecom.com\/telecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Firecetelecom<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercetelecom.com\/telecom\/at-t-conducts-trials-airgig-powerline-technology-georgia-power-international-utility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that the first trial was with an electricity provider outside the U.S., and the <strong>second trial is underway with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Georgia Power<\/strong><\/a>. Stopping short of revealing a service rollout plan, AT&amp;T will take what it learns from the trials and continue to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QbajD6rq7jo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AirGig<\/a>. Based on its evaluation of the current trials, AT&amp;T will look at expanding more advanced BPL technology trials in other locations. AT&amp;T told <em>Firecetelecom<\/em> that while \u201c<em>there\u2019s no timeline yet for commercial deployment, we\u2019re encouraged and excited by what we\u2019ve seen so far<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The service is bullish on AirGig. The telco is touting AirGig&#8217;s potential to deliver 1 Gbps speeds via a millimeter-wave signal guided by power lines. <em>Firecetelecom<\/em> says AT&amp;T\u2019s Ultimate goal with AirGig is to <strong>accelerate broadband deployments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/egpreston.com\/K5GP-BPL.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"(bpl) broadband line noopener over power noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Broadband over power line (BPL)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/egpreston.com\/WB5AOH0203.jpg?resize=127%2C96\" alt=\"Broadband over power line (BPL)\" width=\"127\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a>While there have been plenty of <strong>BPL failures<\/strong>, AT&amp;T claims AirGig is different. They say it is more efficient than earlier generations of BPL because it runs along, and not within, the medium voltage power lines. The technology differs from earlier BPL technologies, which traveled with the current.<\/p>\n<p>In order to roll out Airgig, AT&amp;T had to develop several new BPL innovations to distribute signals from the power lines to homes and businesses. AT&amp;T labs developed a <strong>Radio Distributed Antenna System<\/strong> (RDAS), which uses\u00a0low-cost <strong>plastic antennas<\/strong>, aka <strong>mmWave surface wave launchers<\/strong>, along with <strong>inductive power<\/strong> devices, which receive power without direct electrical connections (for simplified installation).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171223005036\/https:\/\/www.rcrwireless.com\/20170419\/opinion\/project-airgig-what-is-it-really-and-why-do-you-care-tag9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"airgig at&amp;t noopener noreferrer\"><\/a>The RDAS will <strong>reconstruct signals<\/strong> from multi-gigabit <strong>mobile and fixed<\/strong> deployments. Those data signals are then <strong>transmitted using mmWave over power lines<\/strong>. The mmWave surface wave launchers are inductive power devices that create multi-gigabit signals that travel along or near the medium-voltage wire, not through it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maxwell%27s_equations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"equations maxwells noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-88176 size-medium\" title=\"Maxwells Equations\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Maxwells-Equations-e1565223384290-65x150.png?resize=65%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Maxwells Equations\" width=\"65\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Maxwells-Equations-e1565223384290.png?resize=65%2C150&amp;ssl=1 65w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Maxwells-Equations-e1565223384290.png?resize=33%2C75&amp;ssl=1 33w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Maxwells-Equations-e1565223384290.png?w=199&amp;ssl=1 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 65px) 100vw, 65px\" \/><\/a>The data signal uses the <strong>existing pole infrastructures<\/strong> mostly line-of-sight wire paths act as a waveguide that channels the signal and improves the transmission quality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/at-t-airgig-could-mean-100-megabit-rural-broadband-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to<\/a> Mark Evans, a director on AT&amp;T&#8217;s AirGig team. A waveguide is a structure (like an electrical wire) that restricts how much waves can expand over distance, thereby minimizing energy loss. AT&amp;T radio technology engineer Peter Wolniansky explained in a demo that electromagnetic physics make it work,\u00a0 <em>&#8220;The signal energy clings like a glow to this wire, &#8230; It&#8217;s bound by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maxwell%27s_equations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\"><strong>Maxwell&#8217;s equations<\/strong><\/a> to stick to this wire.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Millimeter waves are radio waves from <strong>24-300 GHz<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211022042223\/https:\/\/www.orangesv.com\/blog\/how-att-airgig-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The benefit<\/a> of using these high-frequency bands is access to high bandwidth, between 100-800 MHz, which is <strong>20-100x more than today\u2019s common cellular systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakableTextP2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/people-who-dont-spend-5-hours-a-week-online-learning-will-make-themselves-obsolete-says-att-ceo-2016-2?r=UK&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"at&amp;t ceo randall stephenson noopener noreferrer\"><\/a>AT&amp;T plans to put wireless stations periodically along the route to provide the <strong>last-mile connections<\/strong>. For that last communication link to a home or business, AT&amp;T will use more conventional wireless equipment. Customers would use <strong>5G CPE equipment<\/strong> to connect to the AirGig data flow. Once the CPE has received the signal, it can use <strong>Wi-Fi<\/strong> (802.11ad or 802.11ac) or an <strong>LTE<\/strong> femtocell unit to connect to the end users\u2019 smartphones, tablets, laptops, television,<strong> autonomous vehicles<\/strong> or other <strong>IoT devices<\/strong>. <em>CNet<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/at-t-airgig-could-mean-100-megabit-rural-broadband-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> quotes<\/a> Mark Evans, a director on AT&amp;T&#8217;s AirGig team.&#8221;<em>We&#8217;re aiming to be ready to deploy it commercially in the 2021 timeframe.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><em>CNET<\/em> also quotes Gordon Mansfield, AT&amp;T&#8217;s vice president of converged access and devices who says they are moving forward. He confirmed that AT&amp;T has contracted with manufacturers to build more refined hardware for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/att-5g-network-coming-houston-2018-la-san-francisco-las-vegas-2019\/\">new round of AirGig testing most likely in 2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebroadcastbridge.com\/content\/entry\/7807\/will-airgig-replace-tvs-last-big-iron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"airgig at&amp;t eggs noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"At&amp;T Airgig eggs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thebroadcastbridge.com\/cache\/uploads\/content_images\/airgig_946x432_789_360_70_s.jpg?resize=184%2C84&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"At&amp;T Airgig eggs\" width=\"184\" height=\"84\" \/><\/a>A key part of the AirGig technology for AT&amp;T is that it is <strong>easy to install<\/strong>. Antenna modules &#8212; AT&amp;T calls them eggs &#8212; clamp in pairs on the power line extending each direction from the power pole. The devices can power themselves via inductive power devices without a direct electrical connection. The eggs configure themselves automatically, and the early test showed it takes people <strong>10 minutes to hook up<\/strong> to the network, said AT&amp;T Chief Technology Officer Andre Fuetsch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Kudos to AT&amp;T for trying to figure out how to get everybody else to do their work just like Tom Sawyer.. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/tomsawyer.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-88183 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/tomsawyer.jpg?resize=150%2C122&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/tomsawyer.jpg?resize=150%2C122&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/tomsawyer.jpg?resize=75%2C61&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/tomsawyer.jpg?w=186&amp;ssl=1 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>AT&amp;T can use the existing electrical right of way to bypass local municipality requirements, a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181123051508\/https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2018\/03\/02\/21475\/5g-wireless-pits-cities-against-telecoms-and-their-friends-fcc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long-running tactic of AT&amp;T<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>AT&amp;T does not want to be in the business of connecting customers. They want to use the electric company&#8217;s infrastructure for free because fiber optic cable is expensive to bury underground or string along telephone poles. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>AT&amp;T will be using totally free unlicensed spectrum to sell access back to us at a huge profit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They don&#8217;t even want to pay for electricity to run the equipment.
