Only one of the top 5 networking vendors was able to squeeze out a small gain in switch sales. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210507132852\/https:\/\/www.npd.com\/wps\/portal\/npd\/us\/industry-expertise\/technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The data<\/a> comes from New York-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPD<\/a>. NPD tracks monthly network switch sales data from the sales channel, distributors, and resellers in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/slide-shows\/networking\/300099696\/the-top-5-best-selling-switch-brands-in-q4-2017.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CRN<\/em><\/a> notes that the total number of <strong>switches sold<\/strong> through the channel in the quarter was 514,095. The number is <strong>up slightly<\/strong> from 510,822 in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to NPD. Here are the five vendors that sold the most switches through the channel in the fourth quarter, according to NPD.<\/p>\n<h3>D-Link Systems<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/us.dlink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"D-Link logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120419173414\/http%3A\/\/files.dlink.com.au\/Marketing\/Logos\/D-Link\/DLINK_LOGO_lowres.jpg?resize=122%2C36&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"D-Link logo\" width=\"122\" height=\"36\" \/><\/a>Taiwan-based <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190702204828\/http:\/\/us.dlink.com\/business-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>D-Link<\/strong> Systems<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/2332:TT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2332:TT<\/a>) sold 25,259 switches during the fourth quarter, according to NPD statistics. That total kept the company steady with the same period in 2016 when it sold 25,277. D-Link did not have a switch model among the top 10-selling units during the quarter. Its <strong>market share was unchanged<\/strong> at 4.9%, CRN said.<\/p>\n<h3>TP-Link switch sales<\/h3>\n<p>According to NPD&#8217;s data, of all the five best-selling switch brands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tp-link.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TP-Link<\/strong><\/a> saw the <strong>steepest decline<\/strong> during this period. The company based in Shenzhen, China sold 26,023 switches in Q4 &#8217;17 compared with 29,798 in Q4 &#8217;16. That&#8217;s a 12.7 percent year-over-year decrease. There is one bright spot for the firm, the article reports that the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tp-link.com\/us\/products\/details\/cat-5581_TL-SF1005D.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TLSF1005D<\/a> Ethernet switch was the third-best-selling unit during the quarter. But that was not enough to prevent a <strong>market share decline<\/strong> from 5.8 percent in 2016 to 5.1 percent in 2017.<\/p>\n<h3>Hewlett Packard Enterprise switch sales<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"By HP [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/4\/46\/Hewlett_Packard_Enterprise_logo.svg\" alt=\"HPE Logo\" width=\"119\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a>The news from NDP is not good for former networking giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hewlett Packard Enterprise<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-HPE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPE<\/a>) either. The Palo Alto, CA-based firm saw a 1.8 percent <strong>decline in switches sold<\/strong> from 55,923 in Q4 &#8217;16 to 54,941 switches in Q4 &#8217;17. The quarter&#8217;s total was enough for a 10.7 percent market share, down slightly from the year-ago period. No HPE switch models were among the top 10 for the quarter, according to NPD.<\/p>\n<h3>Netgear sales<\/h3>\n<p><em>CRN<\/em> reports that sales also slipped for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netgear.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Netgear<\/a><\/strong>. The number 2 switch company saw its <strong>market share dip<\/strong> from 18.3% to 17.9% year over year. The California-based firm sold 92,274 switches through the channel in the fourth quarter, down slightly from the 93,531 it sold in the same period a year ago, NPD said. Netgear had four switches in the top 10-best-selling switches during the quarter, including the top two models, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190102054353\/https:\/\/www.netgear.com\/business\/products\/switches\/unmanaged\/FS105.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FS105<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netgear.com\/business\/products\/switches\/unmanaged\/GS105.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GS105NA<\/a> five-port models.<\/p>\n<h3>Cisco switch sales<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cisco<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"By Cisco [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/64\/Cisco_logo.svg\" alt=\"\" width=\"109\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CSCO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSCO<\/a>) was able to hold on to the #1 switch vendor position according to NDP. It sold 225,051 units during the period, a 5.7 percent <strong>increase<\/strong> that boosted the company&#8217;s market share to 43.8 percent from 41.7 a year earlier. Six of the top 10 best-selling switches in the quarter were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/products\/switches\/campus-lan-switches-access\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cisco Catalyst<\/strong>&#8216;s<\/a> led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/products\/collateral\/switches\/catalyst-2960-x-series-switches\/data_sheet_c78-728232.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WS-C2960X 24<\/a>&#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdw.com\/product\/Cisco-Catalyst-2960X-48TS-L-switch-48-ports-managed-rack-mountable\/3069530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">48-port models<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What happened to the network switch market? It&#8217;s still reeling from the 2007\/08 recession and the Wi-Fi takeoff. Other than the Cisco switches, most of the top switch models sold were unmanaged, desktop switches limited to 100 Mbps uplinks. These types of switches make it OK to randomly add an unauthorized switch at the desktop and POOF there does your data. These desktop switches with their limited feature set don&#8217;t include <a href=\"http:\/\/searchnetworking.techtarget.com\/definition\/spanning-tree-protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spanning Tree<\/a>, so users can create a network loop and take down the whole network segment.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not much to shout about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Where are the vendors? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/networking\/300082682\/broadcom-acquiring-brocade-for-5-9-billion-plans-to-divest-ip-networking-business.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brocade<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extremenetworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Extreme<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juniper.net\/uk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juniper<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/2179414\/virtualization\/dell-takes-deeper-dive-into-networking--buys-force10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell<\/a>?
