IT security expenditures to top <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180315105541\/https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3083798\/security\/cybersecurity-spending-outlook-1-trillion-from-2017-to-2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$1 Trillion<\/a> by 2022. Private equity giant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomabravo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Thoma Bravo<\/strong>, LLC<\/a> has jumped back into the IT security market with both feet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barracuda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Barracuda Networks<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has been bought by the private equity firm in a deal that\u2019s valued at $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/security\/barracuda-networks-acquired-by-thoma-bravo-in-1.6b-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112929\" title=\"Barracuda\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barracuda-ThomaBravo-e1581898730162-150x85.png?resize=111%2C63&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Barracuda\" width=\"111\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barracuda-ThomaBravo-e1581898730162.png?resize=150%2C85&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barracuda-ThomaBravo-e1581898730162.png?resize=75%2C43&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barracuda-ThomaBravo-e1581898730162.png?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/a>Barracuda (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:CUDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CUDA<\/a>) sells appliance and cloud-based cybersecurity and data protection services. Clients include; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barracuda.com\/customers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boeing, Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Defense<\/a>. Barracuda says it has over 150,000 customers. Upon the close of the transaction, Barracuda will operate as a <strong>privately held company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Barracuda Networks has been bought<\/h3>\n<p>Barracuda Network was founded in <strong>Ann Arbor<\/strong>, Michigan in 2003. From Ann Arbor, it raised at least $46 million in venture funding prior to its IPO. CUDA <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2013\/10\/01\/barracuda-networks-ipo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">went public on the New York Stock Exchange<\/a> in November 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131203202655\/http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/article\/barracuda-networks-prices-ipo-at-18-at-low-end-of-the-range-cm297103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pricing its<strong> IPO<\/strong> at $18<\/a>. Barracuda acquired Yosemite Technologies in 2009 to expand its offerings into the storage market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesanjoseblog.com\/2013\/07\/barracuda-networks-expands-to-south-san.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"barracuda firewall nexgen noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Barracuda NexGen Firewall\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.testmart.com\/webdata\/prodimg\/BARACU_product_lg.jpg?resize=173%2C70\" alt=\"Barracuda NexGen Firewall\" width=\"173\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a>Barracuda continued to innovate in the run-up to its acquisition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eweek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>eWeek<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/security\/barracuda-networks-acquired-by-thoma-bravo-in-1.6b-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that in March 2017, Barracuda <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/storage\/barracuda-launches-new-vm-backup-functions-for-vmware-hyper-v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debuted<\/a> new <strong>data backup and recovery<\/strong> capabilities for VMware and Microsoft virtual machines. In June 2017 Barracuda <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/security\/barracuda-sentinel-uses-ai-to-detect-spear-phishing-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> its new Sentinel service. The service uses <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> (AI) and container-based technologies to improve <strong>email security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Barracuda also enhanced its network security products and services in 2017. <em>eWeek<\/em> reported in November that the company expanded the cloud capabilities for its <strong>Web Application Firewall<\/strong> (WAF) and NexGen Firewall products. The new capabilities include usage-based billing for the <strong>NextGen firewall<\/strong> running in the <strong>Amazon Web Services<\/strong> (AWS) cloud. The firewall included automated configuration capabilities for the WAF, thanks to an integration with the Puppet DevOps tool.<\/p>\n<p>CEO BJ Jenkins commented on the transaction, \u201c<em>We will continue Barracuda\u2019s tradition of delivering easy-to-use, full-featured solutions that can be deployed in the way that makes sense for our customers.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Thoma Bravo<\/h3>\n<p>Thoma Bravo is a Chicago-based private equity firm with $17 billion under management. Their appetite for IT firms is rather broad. $3.6 billion acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/riverbed-finds-a-buyer-in-private-equity-firm-thoma-bravo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Riverbed<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In October 2015, they teamed up with Silver Lake to buy IT infrastructure management vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarwinds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SolarWinds<\/strong><\/a> for $4.5 billion.<\/li>\n<li>April 2017 &#8211; Purchased a minority stake in the freshly re-spun <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/us\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McAfee<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>June 2017 they purchased Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM), IT security management vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.continuum.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Continuum.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their portfolio has included brands such as; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bomgar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bomgar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digicert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digicert<\/a>, Digital Insight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dynatrace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynatrace<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyland Software<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imprivata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imprivata<\/a>, iPipeline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nintex<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PlanView<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qlik.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qlik<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sailpoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SailPoint, and<\/a> <strong>SonicWall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thoma Bravo has resold many of its holdings in recent years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>March 2012, they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/learn\/al\/en\/alcorp1\/secure\/2012-05-09-dell-acquisition-sonicwall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sold SonicWall to <strong>Dell<\/strong><\/a> for an estimated $1.5 Billion.<\/li>\n<li>March 2015, they s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pehub.com\/2015\/03\/thoma-bravo-to-exit-blue-coat-in-2-4-bln-sale-to-bain\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">old network security vendor <strong>Blue Coat Systems<\/strong> to Bain Capital<\/a> for $2.4 billion.<\/li>\n<li>September 2015, sold its interest in infrastructure-focused solution provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelfutures.com\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/sirius-computer-solutions-partners-kelso-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sirius Computer Solutions to Kelso &amp; Co..<\/a><\/li>\n<li>January 2017, They also sold endpoint security vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pehub.com\/2017\/01\/clearlake-completes-landesk-buyout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>LANdesk Software<\/strong> to Clearlake Capital<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>November 2017, identity and access management vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/11\/17\/identity-solutions-business-sailpoint-up-9-following-ipo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SailPoint Technologies went public with an IPO<\/a>, however, the private equity firm is maintaining a controlling stake in the company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>TechCrunch<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/11\/27\/security-business-barracuda-networks-acquired-for-1-6-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> that private equity firms began more aggressively buying up software companies last year. The thinking seems to be they can generate reliable returns from such investments. The biggest take-private deals lately include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marketo, a marketing software maker. Went public in 2013 and was taken private again by Vista Equity Partners in 2017 for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.techcrunch.com\/2016\/05\/31\/vista-equity-partners-buys-marketo-for-1-8b-in-cash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$1.79 billion<\/a> in cash;<\/li>\n<li>The sale of event-management company Cvent last year to Vista Equity Partners in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-business\/wp\/2016\/11\/29\/after-months-of-government-scrutiny-1-65b-cvent-acquisition-is-finalized\/?utm_term=.00e02d2d3c58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$1.65 billion<\/a> deal.<\/li>\n<li>Cybersecurity risk-monitoring platform SecurityScorecard <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2017\/10\/12\/cybersecurity-risk-monitoring-platform-securityscorecard-raises-27-5-million-from-nokia-gv-intel-sequoia-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised $27.5 million<\/a> from the VC arms of Google, Nokia, and Intel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other notable IT security equity funding recipients include; <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2017\/10\/11\/attivo-networks-raises-21-million-to-thwart-cyberattacks-using-the-art-of-deception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Attivo Networks<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2017\/07\/11\/ai-cybersecurity-startup-darktrace-raises-75-million-now-valued-at-825-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darktrace<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2017\/01\/25\/cybersecurity-startup-sentinelone-raises-70-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SentinelOne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Investopedia<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180101174442\/https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/investing\/barracuda-networks-acquired-16-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speculates<\/a> that Thoma Bravo is paying a pretty <strong>high premium for Barracuda. <\/strong>CUDA now trades at 139 times earnings and 4 times sales. But under private management, its products will likely be integrated with the firm&#8217;s other software products to generate synergies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CRN<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/security\/300095896\/private-equity-strikes-again-thoma-bravo-to-buy-barracuda-networks-for-1-6-billion.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> that being a privately owned company will give Barracuda a stronger ability to <strong>chart its own destiny. <\/strong>They will not have to &#8220;tap-dance to the <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> music,&#8221; Michael Knight, president and chief technology officer at solution provider Encore Technology Group, Greenville, S.C., said. He hopes Thoma Bravo&#8217;s infusion of capital will enable Barracuda to continue driving its public cloud business, a more solidified SD-WAN toolset, and more integrated endpoint security protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have used Barracuda products at past jobs. Including their SPAM-Email firewall appliances and their cloud-based backup up system. The pricing was adequate. Renewals were easy. The email firewalls were really robust and almost set and forget.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The few times when I needed tech support, it was available in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zingermansdeli.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ann Arbor, Michigan<\/a>. Barracuda, founded in Ann Arbor, was one of the early believers in the area as a high-tech hub. Barracuda has plans to spend \u00a0$2.3 million on the expansion of its operations center in the former Borders Books offices at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annarbor.com\/business-review\/barracuda-networks-bringing-hundreds-of-jobs-to-ex-borders-building-in-downtown-ann-arbor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">317 Maynard Street<\/a>. The expansion will add 115 new jobs in downtown Ann Arbor over the next four years.
