The good news is that <strong>IDC called the PC market flat<\/strong>. That\u2019s good news because they had predicted a 1.5% decrease for the quarter. IDC reports worldwide 60.4 million PC&#8217;s sold in the January-to-March period driven mostly by businesses moving to Windows 10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/betanews.com\/2013\/10\/10\/pc-market-continues-to-decline-but-beats-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-103799 size-medium\" title=\"PC market experienced a 14th consecutive quarter of decline\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/PC-decline-graph-e1568064310497-150x90.jpg?resize=150%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"PC market experienced a 14th consecutive quarter of decline\" width=\"150\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/PC-decline-graph-e1568064310497.jpg?resize=150%2C90&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/PC-decline-graph-e1568064310497.jpg?resize=75%2C45&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/PC-decline-graph-e1568064310497.jpg?resize=768%2C462&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/PC-decline-graph-e1568064310497.jpg?w=810&amp;ssl=1 810w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Gartner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/technology\/home.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NYSE : IT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-IT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IT<\/a>) is<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0less m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eh and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180717235302\/https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/3871149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more blah<\/a>. Gartner saw slightly more PC\u2019s shipped in 2018 Q1 at 61.7\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">million units for a 1.4% <\/span><b>decline.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PC market experienced a <\/span><b>14th consecutive quarter of decline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dating back to the second quarter of 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gartner Principal Analyst Ms. Mikako Kitagawa affixed the blame primarily to the Chinese market. &#8220;<em>The major contributor to the decline came from China, where unit shipments declined 5.7 percent year over year.<\/em>&#8221; Ms.Kitagawa continued, &#8220;<em>This was driven by <\/em><\/span><em><b>China&#8217;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s business market, where some state-owned and large enterprises postponed new purchases or upgrades, awaiting new policies and officials&#8217; reassignments after the session of the <\/span><b>National People&#8217;s Congress<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> in early March<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dell logo noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-92339\" title=\"Dell logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dell-logo.png?resize=54%2C54&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dell logo\" width=\"54\" height=\"54\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dell-logo.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dell-logo.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dell-logo.png?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 54px) 100vw, 54px\" \/><\/a>The top three Gartner vendors \u2014 <strong>Dell<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><b>HP, <\/b>and<b> Lenovo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 accounted for 56.9% of global PC shipments in Q1 of 2018. Up slightly compared with 54.5% of shipments in Q1 of 2017. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0experienced the strongest growth rate among the top six vendors worldwide, as its shipments increased 6.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a title=\"HP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HP<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong> (<a title=\"NYSE : HPQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:HPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HPQ<\/a>) worldwide PC shipments increased 2.8% in the first quarter of 2018 versus the same period last year. In EMEA, <\/span><b>HP Inc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. recorded double-digit growth in both desktop and mobile PCs. Gartner says HP Inc. was adversely affected by declining demand in the U.S., which generally accounts for one-third of its total shipments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lenovo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enovo&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/OTC-LNVGY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LNVGY<\/a>) global PC shipments remained flat in the first quarter of 2018. Lenovo achieved 6 percent growth in EMEA and double-digit shipment growth in Latin America. However, in Asia\/Pacific (its largest market), PC shipments declined 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After record holiday sales for consumer and gaming products in the fourth quarter of 2017, <\/span><b>Dell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continued to do well in the first quarter of 2018. With double-digit shipment increases in EMEA, North America, and Latin America, Dell <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grew in all regions except Asia\/Pacific. Thousands of Units.Source: Gartner (April 2018)<\/span>\n<!-- #tablepress-54 from cache -->\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PC shipments in EMEA totaled 18.6 million units in the first quarter of 2018, a 1.7% increase. driven by Enterprise shipments increased as many Windows 10 projects and the fast approach of the compliance deadline for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Data_Protection_Regulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Data Protection Regulation<\/a> (<strong>GDPR<\/strong>) in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PC shipments in Asia\/Pacific totaled 21.9 million units in the first quarter of 2018, a 3.9% decline from the first qu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arter of 2017. As previously mentioned, the PC market in China drove the decline in Asia\/Pacific.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i><\/i><\/b><b><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDC<\/a><\/i><\/b><b><i> <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190510035923\/https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS43734318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the\u00a0<\/span><b>U.S.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market saw a promising opening quarter for the year with almost all major vendors reporting increases in notebook sales. Overall, total PC shipments for 2018 Q1 stood at 13.5 million units.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>IDC <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>HP Inc.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0maintained a comfortable lead over all others in the market with its eighth consecutive quarter of overall growth (up 4.3% year on year) and growth in all regions except Latin America. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-92343 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-1-e1560382889191-150x35.png?resize=150%2C35&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"35\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-1-e1560382889191.png?resize=150%2C35&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-1-e1560382889191.png?resize=75%2C18&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lenovo-Logo-1-e1560382889191.png?w=467&amp;ssl=1 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Lenovo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0saw a flat quarter in 2018 Q1, the third consecutive\u00a0<\/span>quarter in which the company saw year-on-year volume stabilize with flat global growth and a slower pace of decline in the U.S. <b>Dell Inc.<\/b>\u00a0posted the strongest year-on-year growth out of all the major companies, growing 6.4% and buoyed by strong performances in nearly every region.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a title=\"Acer\" href=\"http:\/\/us.acer.com\/ac\/en\/US\/content\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<a title=\"OTC US : ACEIY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=TPE:2353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TPE:2353<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held onto fourth place. That is not the case anymore. Economic stress has lengthened the life span of PCs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/267465\/average-desktop-pc-lifespan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 years to nearly 5 years<\/a> in many firms and even longer in the home market. Increased smartphones capability and cloud-based applications and storage have taken another bite out of the PC market.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But looking into the tea leaves, many think PCs are on the rebound. Driving the PC market is a demand for premium notebooks in the mainstream and commercial markets. Gaming systems are also part of the equation. IDC <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191017081207\/https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS43856818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expects<\/a> overall smartphone shipments to decline by 0.2% in 2018 after falling 0.3% last year, the thought is that those dollars would be used to upgrade their PCs. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mmmm &#8211; we&#8217;ll see. I say not likely.
