It was popular in the late \u201990s and early 2000s when there were only two messengers to communicate with your friends and family. Well &#8230; the remnants of Yahoo nee Verizon recently <a href=\"https:\/\/help.yahoo.com\/kb\/messenger\/SLN28776.html?impressions=true&amp;guccounter=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> the <strong>end of Yahoo Messenger<\/strong>. <a title=\"Verizon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.verizon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Verizon<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ : VZ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-VZ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VZ<\/a>)\/Yahoo announced that they will disable the Yahoo Messenger service after <strong>July 17th, 2018<\/strong>. (<em><strong>rb-<\/strong> yes Yahoo Messenger was still a thing &#8211; in the face of <a title=\"Apple Computers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : AAPL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAPL<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/ht204380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FaceTime<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telegram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapchat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Snapchat<\/a>, and <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NASDAQ : FB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FB<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WhatsApp<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/all\/verizon-says-oath-dead-meet-verizon-media-group-n949631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oath website<\/a>, YIM had 122.6 million users at its peak. In the FAQ announcing the <strong>shutdown<\/strong>, Yahoo said, &#8220;<em>We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning\u00a0 &#8230; As the communications landscape continues to change over, we&#8217;re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.<\/em>&#8221; If you&#8217;re looking for a Messenger replacement from Yahoo, they recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180710171800\/https:\/\/squirrel.yahoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Squirrel<\/a>, which is in closed beta and by invite only. But why?<\/p>\n<p>YIM leaves a dubious security legacy, as all &#8220;free&#8221; web products do. In 2007 there were <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090503092120\/http:\/\/www.chatspam.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=25&amp;Itemid=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that up to 75%\u00a0 of the users in Yahoo Messenger were <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220316210057\/https:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/spambot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SPAMBots<\/strong><\/a>. In 2010 all Yahoo systems and customer email accounts were hacked by the Chinese military in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.secureworks.com\/blog\/research-20913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Operation Aurora<\/strong><\/a>.&#8221; In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Aurora#Response_and_aftermath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Operation Aurora<\/a> the Chinese also attacked <a title=\"Adobe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : ADBE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-ADBE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ADBE<\/a><a title=\"Adobe Systems\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adobe_Systems\">)<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dow Chemical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dow.com\/en-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dow Chemical<\/a>, <a title=\"Google\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : GOOG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-GOOG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GOOG<\/a>) <a title=\"Juniper\" href=\"http:\/\/www.juniper.net\/us\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juniper Networks<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-JNPR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JNPR<\/a><a title=\"Juniper Networks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juniper_Networks\">)<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Morgan Stanley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.morganstanley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Stanley<\/a>,\u00a0Northrop Grumman\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=NYSE:NOC&amp;e=4112296&amp;tbm=fin&amp;biw=855&amp;bih=607#scso=uid_TvJAW7elLobWjwTZ1o3ADw_5:0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NOC<\/a><a title=\"Northrop Grumman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northrop_Grumman\">)<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"RackSpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rackspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rackspace<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"HYSE | RAX\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180520181956\/https:\/\/www.investors.com\/news\/technology\/rackspace-accepts-4-3-billion-buyout-from-apollo-global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RAX<\/a>), and <a title=\"Symantec\" href=\"https:\/\/securitycloud.symantec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Symantec<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"NASDAQ : SYMC\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2wgaW-pra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SYMC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I<a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2016\/02\/top-us-spy-chief-china-still-successful-in-cyber-espionage-against-us\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thediplomat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/thediplomat_2016-02-15_15-41-13-386x286.jpg?resize=92%2C68&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"92\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a>n 2014 <em>The Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/feb\/27\/gchq-nsa-webcam-images-internet-yahoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that The British intelligence agency\u00a0<a title=\"Government Communications Headquarters\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_Communications_Headquarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Government Communications Headquarters<\/a> (GCHQ)&#8217;s <strong>secret\u00a0<a title=\"Mass surveillance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mass_surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mass surveillance<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0program\u00a0<a title=\"Optic Nerve (GCHQ)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Optic_Nerve_(GCHQ)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Optic Nerve<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"National Security Agency\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Security_Agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Security Agency<\/a>\u00a0(NSA) were indiscriminately <strong>collecting still images from Yahoo webcam streams<\/strong> from millions of mostly innocent Yahoo webcam users, among other things creating a database for <strong>facial recognition<\/strong> for future use. Optic Nerve takes a still image from the webcam stream every 5 minutes. Also in 2014 Yahoo was also <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190428183721\/https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/aeknw5\/yahoo-supposed-data-breach-200-million-credentials-dark-web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit by a <strong>hack<\/strong><\/a> that affected around <strong>500 million people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advox.globalvoices.org\/2014\/02\/10\/tomorrow-the-internet-says-no-to-mass-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"mass noopener surveillance noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"mass surveillance\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/advox.globalvoices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DoaaEladl-listening-793x600.jpg?resize=101%2C77&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"mass surveillance\" width=\"101\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a>In September 2016,\u00a0<i>The New York Times<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/29\/technology\/yahoo-data-breach-hacking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that Yahoo&#8217;s security team, had pressed for Yahoo to adopt end-to-end encryption sometime between 2014 and 2015, but senior leadership resisted, &#8220;<em>&#8230;because it would have hurt Yahoo\u2019s ability to index and search message data<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2017 Yahoo <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/10\/03\/technology\/business\/yahoo-breach-3-billion-accounts\/index.html?iid=EL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that <strong>all of its customer&#8217;s accounts were compromised<\/strong>. Allegedly Yahoo did not detect the full extent of the 2013 hack until\u00a0 4 years later. In 2017, Yahoo announced that all <strong>3 billion accounts were compromised<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2018\/06\/08\/the-message-is-lost-yahoo-kills-off-its-messenger-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"yahoo noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Yahoo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mercurynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Yahoo_Logo_Color.png?resize=66%2C66&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Yahoo\" width=\"66\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a> can download your chat history for the next 6 months at this download request site. Yahoo will email your chats to you. If you have anything you want to save from Yahoo Messenger, it&#8217;s a good idea to get a copy, because users will be unable to sign in to the service after July 17th.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>YIM is not the first long-standing chat app to shut down &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190417053907\/https:\/\/help.aol.com\/articles\/aim-discontinued\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AOL Instant Messenger<\/a> shut <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/10\/06\/aol-instant-messenger-shut-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">down December 15, 2017<\/a>.
