The flow chart can help you communicate with your business users better. A well-done flow chart can <strong>describe and break down a process<\/strong> for easier explanation and help you improve a process. More importantly, creating a flow chart helps you understand the process and <strong>look for improvements<\/strong>.\u00a0 It also helps you focus on each individual step, without feeling overwhelmed by the bigger picture.<\/p>\n<p>Flow charts are one of the 7 basic Tools and Techniques called out in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210722052630\/https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/pmbok-guide-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PMBOK<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.projectengineer.net\/project-quality-management-according-to-the-pmbok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Project Quality Management knowledge area<\/strong><\/a>. The other PMBOK Quality Management tools and techniques are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Histogram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">histogram<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pareto_chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pareto chart<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Check_sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check sheet<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Control_chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">control chart<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishikawa_diagram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cause-and-effect diagram<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scatter_diagram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scatter diagram<\/a>. Enter the purpose (start\/stop\/decision\/etc.) of each symbol within the shape and connect them with arrows to show the direction of the flow.<\/p>\n<p>Flow Charts are usually drawn using <strong>standard symbols<\/strong>; however, some special symbols can also be used when required. If you use non-standard symbols people may not understand them and you will fail to clearly communicate your message. The name or reference for the other process should appear within the symbol.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-56 from cache -->\n<p>The following are some flowcharting tips:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Keep it simple <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Begin by listing <strong>each step of the process<\/strong> using the symbols above \u2013 just put your ideas on paper (<em>screen?<\/em>) and correct them from there. It will surprise you how much you learn about your organization in this process.<\/li>\n<li>The usual direction of the flow is from left to right or top to bottom.<\/li>\n<li>Put an arrowhead on the flow line to show the decision process.<\/li>\n<li>Only one flow line should come out from a process symbol.<\/li>\n<li>Only one flow line should enter a decision symbol, but two or three flow lines, one for each possible answer, should leave the decision symbol.<\/li>\n<li>Only use one flow line in conjunction with the terminal symbol.<\/li>\n<li>Use only <strong>brief descriptions<\/strong> in standard flow chart symbols.
