But in 2018 the working class is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/donald-trump-republican-tax-bill-deceptively-sold-cuts-middle-classes-obamacare-a8121751.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">under siege<\/a>. One way to celebrate labors&#8217; contribution is to look at the artifacts of the last time the economy was so out of whack.<\/p>\n<h3>Detroit Industry<\/h3>\n<p>One magnificent artifact is &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluffton.edu\/homepages\/facstaff\/sullivanm\/michigan\/detroit\/riveramurals\/intro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Detroit Industry<\/em><\/a><\/strong>&#8221; at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Detroit Institute of Arts<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluffton.edu\/homepages\/facstaff\/sullivanm\/michigan\/detroit\/riveramurals\/intro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Industry<\/a><\/em>&#8221; is a four-wall mural created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diegorivera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Diego Rivera<\/strong><\/a> in 1932-1933. The murals depict the history of Detroit and the development of industry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluffton.edu\/homepages\/facstaff\/sullivanm\/michigan\/detroit\/riveramurals\/north2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"&quot;Detroit Industry&quot; by Diego Rivera. 1932-1933\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bluffton.edu\/homepages\/facstaff\/sullivanm\/michigan\/detroit\/riveramurals\/2556.jpg?resize=480%2C316&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"&quot;Detroit Industry&quot; by Diego Rivera. 1932-1933\" width=\"480\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The DIA commissioned\u00a0Detroit Industry<\/em>, with backing from DIA patron <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190611130756\/http:\/\/www.history.com:80\/this-day-in-history\/edsel-ford-succeeds-father-as-president-of-ford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edsel Ford<\/a>. The only request was that the murals address the <strong>history of Detroit and the development of industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Diego Rivera<\/h3>\n<p>Rivera and his spouse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fridakahlo.org\/frida-kahlo-biography.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frida Kahlo<\/a> arrived in Detroit in 1932 during the depths of the &#8220;Great Depression.&#8221;\u00a0 He completed the fresco in 1933. The images show Rivera\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/diego-rivera-s-detroit-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take<\/a> on big-time American capitalism. They simultaneously glorify the culture of the modern factory as well as slyly savaging the men in charge.<\/p>\n<p>This panel, from the north wall. &#8220;<em>Production and Manufacture of Engine and Transmission<\/em>,&#8221; is based on Rivera\u2019s observations of the 1932 Ford V-8 being produced at <a title=\"Ford\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ford<\/strong> Motor Company<\/a>&#8216;s (<a title=\"NYSE : F\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210423122406\/https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/travel\/detroit\/d38.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>River Rouge factory<\/strong><\/a>.
