Researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Washington University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johns Hopkins University<\/a> published their findings on (08\/23\/2018). The known <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5274785\/how-to-spot-a-russian-troll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian\u00a0social media troll<\/a><\/strong> which specializes in online influence operations is linked to the spread of <strong>&#8220;polarized and anti-vaccine&#8221; misinformation via social media. <\/strong>The social media posts appear designed to undercut trust in vaccines. There appears to be a steady stream of vaccine discussion being undertaken by <strong>social media bots. <\/strong>Social media bots are automated accounts. The researchers also identified and <strong>social media cyborgs<\/strong>\u2019, that are hacked accounts taken over by bots. There are also <strong>social media trolls. <\/strong>Social media trolls are people who often disguise their identity and seek to sow discord.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also identified &#8220;<strong>content polluters.<\/strong>&#8221; Content polluters used anti-vaccine messages as bait to entice their followers to <strong>click on advertisements and links to malicious websites. <\/strong>The researchers contend that content polluters collate to high levels of anti-vaccine content. One tact cited in the article is rehashing <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210225071243\/https:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/get-involved\/media-centre\/position-statements\/mmr-vaccine.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discredited research<\/a>\u00a0published 20 years ago with fake claims of risks that have led to some parents opting to not vaccinate their children.<\/p>\n<h3>Threats from online misinformation<\/h3>\n<p>The threat from <strong>online misinformation<\/strong> is that even fewer parents will vaccinate their children against measles, mumps, and rubella. The researchers wrote that vaccine-hesitant parents are more likely to turn to the internet for information and less likely to trust healthcare providers and public health experts on the subject &#8230; Exposure to the vaccine debate may suggest that there is no scientific consensus, shaking confidence in vaccination. Emerson<\/a>\u00a0described as the <strong>Kremlin&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfosecurity.com\/us-government-accuses-russia-election-hacking-a-9442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4D campaigns<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; for dismiss, distort, distract and dismay. In a 2015 speech, Mr. Emerson warned that the Russian government was becoming more expert at running these types of propaganda campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Intelligence experts in the U.S. and Europe have warned that these Kremlin campaigns continue. In February, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats warned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/general\/committee_membership\/committee_memberships_SLIN.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Intelligence Committee<\/a> that the intelligence community expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfosecurity.com\/russia-will-meddle-in-us-midterm-elections-spy-chief-warns-a-10649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russia to attempt to <strong>amplify existing divisions in U.S. society<\/strong><\/a><strong> to spread chaos<\/strong> for strategic effect. Ambassador\u00a0Coats warned,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>At a minimum, we expect Russia to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokespeople and other means of influence to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Anti-Bot research<\/h3>\n<p>Little research has gone into researching how to identify social media trolls or bots that influence online discussions. (<em><strong>rb-\u00a0<\/strong>I covered some of the efforts underway to <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/?p=81014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detect bots<\/a> in 2016.<\/em>) In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DARPA<\/a> ran a contest in which it asked researchers to classify whether a stream of tweets it had harvested about vaccines in 2014 were bots. Researchers were given a data set with more than 4 million messages harvested from 7,000 accounts, of which 39 were bots.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/546256\/how-darpa-took-on-the-twitter-bot-menace-with-one-hand-behind-its-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT Technology Review<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reported the winner, data science and social analytics firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentimetrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SentiMetrix<\/a>, correctly identified all the bots, with only one false positive.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1601.05140.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SentiMetrix was able to use an algorithm<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0 look\u00a0for &#8220;linguistic cues&#8221; the poster was fake, like<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210525094439\/https:\/\/cdn.business2community.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" title=\"Little research has gone into researching how to identify social media trolls or bot\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130525103340\/http%3A\/\/cdn.business2community.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/SocialMedia_Robot_NEW.png?resize=99%2C149&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Little research has gone into researching how to identify social media trolls or bot\" width=\"99\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>Tweets that used bad grammar,<\/li>\n<li>Output was similar to other chatbots like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.vsoftconsulting.com\/blog\/the-history-of-chatbots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eliza,<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Profile pictures that used stock images,<\/li>\n<li>Numbers of tweets posted over time,<\/li>\n<li>Unusual posting patterns,<\/li>\n<li>Female username with a profile photo of a bearded man. <em>(<strong>rb-<\/strong> Sound familiar? I <a href=\"https:\/\/rbach.net\/blog\/?p=82220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote about<\/a> some of these same steps in 2016)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The research led SentiMetrix to identify 25 bots, which enabled it to train a machine-learning algorithm to pinpoint 10 more. Despite such work, &#8220;<em>the public health community largely overlooked the implications of these findings<\/em>,&#8221; the Johns Hopkins and George Washington researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of social media bots on the vaccine debates is not an abstract concern. The U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240515183720\/https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240515183720\/https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> they are investigating 124 cases of measles across 22 states and DC, including Michigan. That&#8217;s already more than the 118 cases counted in the U.S. during all of 2017.<\/p>\n<h3>Spreading measles in Michigan<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181210064421\/https:\/\/www.woodtv.com\/news\/michigan\/cdc-michigan-among-states-reporting-measles-in-2018\/1373186928\">WOODTV<\/a> in Grand Rapids reports that cases of measles in Michigan have hit a two-decade high. Angela Minicuci with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MDHHS<\/a> told WOODTV the state has \u201ctallied 10\u00a0cases of measles so far this year\u00a0\u2014 the highest case count since 1998.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC says low vaccination rates are to blame for recent measles outbreaks. They report the majority of those who contract measles, which is highly contagious, have not been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>One reason so many are at risk of <strong>spreading measles<\/strong> is that 18 states allow parents to opt-out of vaccinating their schoolchildren for non-medical reasons. In June 2018 researchers found\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/globalbiodefense.com\/2018\/06\/28\/the-state-of-the-antivaccine-movement-in-the-united-states\/\">multiple &#8220;hotspot&#8221; areas<\/a>,&#8221; at high risk for vaccine-preventable pediatric infection epidemics.&#8221; Included in these hotspots are Detroit, Troy, and Warren, Michigan. Grand Traverse County has one of Michigan&#8217;s highest rates of schoolchildren opting out of vaccines &#8212; twice the state average and six times the national rate for kindergartners in 2013-14.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is not limited to the United States. In Europe, there&#8217;s been a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/aug\/20\/low-mmr-uptake-blamed-for-surge-in-measles-cases-across-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dramatic increase<\/a>&#8221; in measles infections.
